One of the major problems of the current photoconductive antennas is that the antenna efficiency is very low, thus it is difficult to obtain high power THz waves. In this paper a comparison of the conventional and photoconductive antennas is made and various parameters and aspects of photoconductive antennas are examined with the aim to maximise its efficiency factor. A new antenna efficiency expression is derived which clearly shows how the efficiency is linked to various parameters. An example is used to demonstrate why the total efficiency is very low and what the major limiting factors are. Recommendations for how to increase the efficiency are presented.","PeriodicalId":330623,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115634757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The helical antenna can generate circular polarization (CP) in the normal direction to the helical axias under a condition of structural parameters. However, when a planar and slender antenna shape is required, it may be difficult to satisfy the condition. In the proposed antenna, the ratio of the thickness : vertical : horizontal sides is approximately 1:2:8 which has been obtained generating circular polarization using a back conductor. The back conductor is installed at a close position behind the helical element using a capacitive feed structure in order to keep a low-profile structure. This antenna can be resonated at around 1 GHz with the size satisfying k0 a=0.35 (k0: wave mumber at the resonance frequency, a:radius of a hypothetical sphere circumferencing the antenna). Reasonable agreements have been obtained between simulated and measured results in S11, axial ratio, and radiation pattern.","PeriodicalId":330623,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126723079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Low-profile equiangular- and Archimedean-spiral antennas, each backed by an EBG reflector, have a wider input impedance bandwidth than the curl. For example multiple antenna technology is already used in wireless communication systems such as in IEEE 802.11n, WiMAX and LTE. This paper reviews some recent topologies of multiple antennas for handheld devices and base stations. We will focus on the basic concerns and constraints when designing a multiple antenna system. In particular low mutual coupling between antenna elements should be addressed to attain high radiation efficiency and sufficient MIMO capacity gain. Furthermore the number of ports in the multiple antenna systems works against the devices' size constraint. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve a very compact antenna solution for handheld devices with more than 4 ports. In contrast, the base station antenna design can sustain tens of ports building on a cubic structure employing both spatial and polarization diversities.","PeriodicalId":330623,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123871644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
