This research aimed to examine the representation of Kashmir’s special status in Indian newspaper editorials and to find the frequently appearing types of transitivity processes in Indian newspapers about revoking Kashmir’s special status. The transitivity analysis was carried out by using the UAM corpus analysis tool through which the text of the editorials was first tagged and then analyzed. The study selected 31 editorials from the Indian Express and the Hindu for the study. This was a clause analysis, and all the types of processes, participants and circumstances were investigated. The study utilized quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. The quantitative findings UAM corpus tool revealed: Transitivity processes =498, Participants=897, Circumstantial elements = 257. The material process accounted for 59.58% of the total (600), the mental process accounted for 5.06% (51), the relational process accounted for 16.39% (165), the verbal process accounted for 6.06% (61), the existential process accounted for 1.49% (15) and the behavioral process accounted for 1.99 percent (20). The transitivity analysis stood as one of the significant discourse models to unveil the hidden meaning present in the text. Transitivity analysis allowed for the in-depth analysis of the selected editorials. The analysis revealed three major themes, including the justification of the decision about the revoked Article 370, the regional and international implications of the decision and the counter-narrative of the decision. These three themes were decoded using transitivity analysis. The Indian editorials strategically utilized participants, process and circumstances to present the decision about the revocation of Kashmir's Special status. The linguistic choices used in the editorials unveiled power dynamics, tension, prospects, consequences, threats and other aspects.","PeriodicalId":32693,"journal":{"name":"IJOTLTL Indonesian Journal of Language Teaching and Linguistics","volume":"3 1","pages":"1305-1331"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://jals.miard.org/index.php/jals/article/download/273/228","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147906670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method used is the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the words found in the song lyrics \"Nothing Like Us\". This research showed three lexical cohesion categories, namely repetition, synonymy, and meronymy, and three grammatical cohesion categories, particularly personal reference, demonstrative reference, and conjunction. According to the findings, the song \"Nothing Like Us\" lyrics contain nine different lexical cohesion types, including seven repetitions, one synonym, and one meronymy. Based on the summary of the result, repetition becomes the data's most common or dominant occurrence. Meanwhile, grammatical cohesion consists of three personal reference, one demonstrative reference, and five conjunctions. As a result, conjunctions appear to be the most frequent in the data. The goal of lexical and grammatical cohesion is to provide harmony to songs to make them more meaningful. The most common effects on listeners were repetitions deepening the song's meaning and allowing listeners to enlist their thoughts more deeply in the song.","PeriodicalId":32693,"journal":{"name":"IJOTLTL Indonesian Journal of Language Teaching and Linguistics","volume":"2 1","pages":"19-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://jurnal.ympn2.or.id/index.php/JLPS/article/download/9/40","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147909055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research conducted a descriptive qualitative using Searle's taxonomy of illocutionary acts theory. There were 42 utterances found. The data analysis was performed by categorizing into representative, directive, commissive expressive, and declarative. The results showed that the most prevalent type of speech act was representative (69%) which included predicting, informing, asserting, rejecting, claiming, thinking, and believing. It was followed by directives (21%) in commanding, advising, and asking. Expressive (%) involved gratitude, apologizing, regretting, and like. Commissive (2%) contained committing the speaker to do something in the future. The dominant illocutionary act used by the main character were representatives. The main character tended to convey his utterance for describing states or events in the world that he believed it to be. Meanwhile, the main character did not use declarative at all since this act requires authority and status to do. Thus, the main character lacked any sort of power or authority in any position in the world to change the world through words.","PeriodicalId":32693,"journal":{"name":"IJOTLTL Indonesian Journal of Language Teaching and Linguistics","volume":"7 3","pages":"217-233"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://ijotl-tl.soloclcs.org/index.php/ijoltl/article/download/698/631","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147906505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
