The architecture uses a global identity namespace and does not require global addressing or a shared internetworking protocol. It integrates the new concept of dynamic network composition with other recent architectural concepts, such as decoupling locators from identifiers. This paper examines whether TurfNet's naming and inter-domain routing architecture can scale to networks of the size of the global Internet. The paper uses existing research into the topology of the Internet's autonomous system graph and related results that quantify typical traffic patterns to analyze the scalability and performance of the TurfNet architecture on similar internetwork topologies.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"63 1","pages":"28-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75601300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless LAN hotspot services will be available in numerous locations, and cellular services, which provide a wide coverage area, will also be available. In order to realize efficient mobile computing in such an environment, mobile hosts must have multiple network media as well as functions to select the optimum network among them based upon the current situation without the disconnecting communications. In order to provide mobile hosts with such a function, we propose an association layer, which is inserted between the transport and network layers. The association layer selects the appropriate network medium for each flow according to the network conditions and flow characteristics, providing end-to-end QoS in multihomed networks. Furthermore, we show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme through simulation results and demonstrate proof of concept based on empirical evaluations of a prototype implementation.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"45 1","pages":"38-42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89820625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a novel network and system architecture enabling network self-organization and dynamic network composition. The proposed network architecture is based on a hierarchical overlay network model, where components of the overlays can also be overlays themselves. This introduces a self-contained network architecture argued to suit ambient networking. The network architecture is discussed together with the rules or composition principles that enforce an attracting tree structure to the hierarchical overlays. Besides the network architecture the major components of the system architecture is also presented involving the naming and addressing scheme and handling of network management data1.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"1 1","pages":"17-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83814823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the access network, other networks, including the Internet, can be reached. This simple, hierarchical structure is however disappearing. New kinds of mobile networks, e.g. personal area networks, body area networks, home networks, vehicular networks and sensor networks, are currently being investigated. Most of these networks are ad-hoc networks, or even moving ad-hoc networks. What is more, they are expected to dynamically interconnect themselves and then connect to access networks that themselves dynamically attach to other access networks and core networks.The realization of these future dynamic network scenarios requires augmentation and extension of available technology. For example, heterogeneous access technologies and interworking of different protocols must be supported. Furthermore, the effort for running and maintaining these networks should be kept low, such that - despite the increasing complexity of the overall system - auto-configuration and, above all, simplicity must be considered. The panelists will discuss the research issues that must be addressed to realize this vision. Should we just concentrate on fixes and add-ons to existing systems and procedures, and if yes, what functionality must be supported and how? Do we indeed need to re-invent basic communication paradigms such as the IP protocol, and if yes, what features should be supported by its successor? Is the vision of dynamic internetworking at all realistic, or will future mobile networks, for simplicity's sake, in the end only interwork under well-defined, static conditions.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"102 1","pages":"22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75806734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Janus provides flexibility by focusing on functions of the sensor network rather the data that it contains. This allows us to perform service composition by dynamically combining functions together. In contrast to existing application-specific access techniques, Janus separates the access technique from the sensor network itself by inserting itself between the sensor network and the access network. This attribute allows for application-specific access techniques to be deployed dynamically without requiring the sensor network itself to be upgraded. Although Janus provides RPC-like semantics, unlike typical RPC systems, most of the functionality of Janus is present at the RPC client, which is located outside of the sensor network, in order to keep the RPC server inside the sensor network as lightweight as possible. We have implemented a prototype of Janus to interconnect a network of sixteen sensors in a typical environmental monitoring scenario to an Internet host.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"2 1","pages":"248-249"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89177444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though mobility management has been investigated within numerous research and standardisation projects, the novel approach of Ambient Networks on the distribution of control space functions brings up possibilities to tailor mobility support for specific environments such as 3GPP and IEEE802 networks and on the other hand to efficiently manage the large variety of co-existing legacy and novel solutions foreseen in beyond 3G networks. The paper describes how modular design of mobility management functions can contribute to this objective. A topic, which is very much related to modularity deals with different types of communication endpoints. The paper elucidates how this discussion will help to coordinate different mobility solutions residing at different layers of the communication stack.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"1 1","pages":"43-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91301069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This should happen without the need for pre-configuration or offline negotiation between network operators. Ambient Networks clearly separates the control space from the transport protocol, and introduces a common control space called the Ambient Control Space that comprised all control functionality within an Ambient Networks. The Ambient Control Space is also responsible for the composition of different networks, with the control spaces of composing networks forming one Ambient Control Space. This paper discusses the justification of Ambient Networks, the main novelties being introduced by Ambient Networks, and the requirements imposed on the Ambient Control Space. This heterogeneity requires user pre-configurations, namely with respect to the proper autoconfiguration mechanism to be used at each time. On the other hand, future networks may imply that users own personal networks demanding self-configuration and self-management, and being part of very dynamic scenarios. In this paper we make a survey of the autoconfiguration mechanisms available for IP networks, and argue that a new solution is needed, so that the proper autoconfiguration mechanism can be selected automatically, dynamically and efficiently, and future communication paradigms can be properly addressed.","PeriodicalId":32577,"journal":{"name":"DIN","volume":"24 1","pages":"7-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73882318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
