The portrayal of this group in the media is critical because it has the potential to either perpetuate stereotypes or contribute to constructive societal change. The study, \"Corpus-assisted discourse study (CADS): Women with disabilities in Kompas.com's News Reporting,\" addressed how one of Indonesia's prominent news websites, Kompas.com, portrayed and discussed women with disabilities in its news reporting. This study conducted a descriptive qualitative study concerning the corpus-aided discourse study (CADS) approach. It used the web scraping of Octoparse to build a sizable news corpus from Kompas.com. Then, AntcConc, a corpus toolkit, generated 26,398 tokens from news items with the keyword phrase perempuan disabilitas (women with disabilities). The findings indicated 45 occurrences of perempuan (women) and disabilitas (disability) associated with the lexical words: ganda (multiple), seksual (sexual), kekerasan (violence), diperkosa (raped), etc. Meanwhile, concordance analysis of the corpus revealed different topic clusters in the news reports: violent crimes and challenges relating to policies for women with disabilities. This study also shed insights on the unintentional potential ramifications for readers' cognitive biases in the discourse that Kompas.com propagated through news reporting.","PeriodicalId":32570,"journal":{"name":"Retorika","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135302964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data are in the form of words, expressions, and sentences contained expression of magical power on the walls of elementary school at Karesidenan Surakarta. Analyzing data of the research uses referential equivalent, pragmatic, translational, and distribution methods of reading markup techniques. Collecting data uses the documentation method. The results show that first, the expression of magical power on the walls of elementary school at Karesidenan Surakarta indicate two forms of speech acts, namely direct speech act and indirect speech act. Second, the sentence mode used is the imperative mode, the obligative mode, and the declarative-imperative mode. Third, the existing speech act function consists of imperative mode (order, appeal, prohibiting, and invitation/exclamation), obligative mode functions to require, and declarative-imperative mode functions to assert, remind, advise, propose/offer/suggest, governing, and threatening. The novelty of this research found that the expression of magical power on the walls of elementary school generally uses an indirect strategy. The strategy is expressed through a declarative sentence but has an imperative mode with the aim of smoothing the command to the reader. It is intended that the reader follows the command in the expression of magical power on the walls of elementary school.","PeriodicalId":32570,"journal":{"name":"Retorika","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135302963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research is a descriptive-quantitative study. The subjects consist of 10 BIPA instructors and 20 BIPA learners from UPT BIPA Muhammadiyah Malang University, CIS BIPA State University of Malang, IAIN Surakarta Language Center, and UPT BIPA State University of Medan. The research data include quantitative and qualitative data related to the beliefs that BIPA instructors and learners regarding the instructional framework for grammar learning. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Burgess and Etherington (2022) and interviews. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis, referring to the beliefs of BIPA instructors and learners regarding grammar instruction. The data analysis results showed that there are differences in beliefs between BIPA learners and instructors regarding the instructional model for teaching Indonesian grammar. BIPA learners believe that Form-Focused Instruction (FFI) is more effective in mastering Indonesian grammar because it focuses on rules and is taught explicitly and deductively, allowing learners to directly understand the target language rules. In contrast, instructors believe that Meaning-Focused Instruction (MFI) is the most suitable instructional model for teaching Indonesian grammar because it focuses on communicative aspects and taught implicitly and inductively, enabling learners to better apply the target language rules. To accommodate these differences in beliefs, an instructional model is needed to accommodate it with the following stages: (1) exposure, (2) formulation of grammar rules, (3) reinforcement of grammar rules, and (4) the use of grammar rules.","PeriodicalId":32570,"journal":{"name":"Retorika","volume":"28 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134945062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using the qualitative model of Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method to uncover social injustice sourced from primary data websites, videos, and literature. Using data collection techniques of free listening and note-taking techniques. The researcher is an instrument of planning, implementing data collection, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting findings. The results of the lexical pragmatic text analysis found social irregularities of rejection and destruction of houses of worship which represent that the applicable constitution can not be implemented, disobeyed, disobeyed, denied, trivialized, and the existence of resistance to the constitution. It was found that there were obstacles to handling social irregularities in the form of consensus (agreement) of community groups in the form of counter-hegemony and the application of regulations in the realization of contradictions between the 1945 Constitution and PBM Number 9 and 8 of 2006. This shows that there are social irregularities that are deliberately perpetuated so that the apparatus and instruments of state power work. So it is necessary to apply intellectual hegemony to apply the constitution, ideology and power. So it concludes that the government to overcome social irregularities must use total hegemony (integral) without violence, using the constitution and the state ideology apparatus, so that power can regulate the order of worship and religion in Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":32570,"journal":{"name":"Retorika","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135935221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
