Impairments to kidney function directly affect all other organ systems and have significant implications for morbidity in the critical care setting. Understanding renal disease, it treatment and its replacement is imperative to effectively managing patients in the intensive care unit. This chapter focuses on diagnostic modalities for assessing renal function, acid–base disorders, infection, and electrolyte abnormalities. Here, the authors also focuses on differentiating prerenal, intrinsic renal, and postrenal causes of acute kidney failure, strategies for prevention, and the various forms of dialysis.","PeriodicalId":325709,"journal":{"name":"Anesthesiology Critical Care Board Review","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130676674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Obstetric critical care questions are usually integrated into broader surgical and infectious topics, and the goal of this chapter is specifically to cover this content with detail in lieu of having it show up as “grab bag” questions in other topical chapters (although this occurs as well). Nonetheless, questions on these topics should be expected on the examination and are common pitfalls for those undergoing certification. Obstetric patients may be admitted to any ICU that cares for surgical patients and as this population has a unique set of clinical needs and presenting pathology. Knowledge of the content in this chapter has practical implications for patient care and is justifiably covered in the certification exam.","PeriodicalId":325709,"journal":{"name":"Anesthesiology Critical Care Board Review","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130708479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because many variables exists that affect the efficacy and indications for drug intervention, a thorough knowledge of pharmacology is needed in the intensive care unit, just as it is needed in the operating room. Because pharmacology effects every system it may potentially be included in every type of question. In order to achieve a pharmacologic focus, much of this chapter emphasizes and infrequently seen but non-isoteric contact. Overall, chapter is designed to evaluate pharmacologic knowledge with highly clinical vignettes for the reader. Additionally, the reader will find an emphasis on practice pharmacologic elements of managing infectious diseases and complexities of sedation, which anesthesiologists will find reminiscent of the residency training with a critical care “twist”.","PeriodicalId":325709,"journal":{"name":"Anesthesiology Critical Care Board Review","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116529129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
