Prior to the pandemic, for most of us, our weekly Monday through Friday working routine was spent in the office or in the field environment. Now, and in the future, many will continue to work from home. Conducting a ‘Risk Assessment’ of our residence has become even more relevant. This paper takes a comprehensive look at residential electrical hazards including circuit breakers, receptacles, grounding, lighting and light levels.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124533347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lightning risk depends on the dimensional and environmental characteristics of the structure as well as on lightning ground flash density in its location. The prospected risk can determine the need of protection measures. The standard IEC 62305–2 proposes a method to calculate the probable average annual loss in a structure due to lightning flashes. It presents some difficulty of application due to the multitude of coefficients to be used. The aim of this paper is to introduce a simplified approach as reduction of the IEC method assuming buildings in urban environment as reference type.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"55 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128359959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specialty PPE herein covers PPE for hazards other than arc flash which may or may not be arc rated to provide protection from another hazard. Since the introduction of arc rated PPE in the 1990's there has been continued interest in protection of workers from electrical hazards, but electrical hazards are frequently found in the same work location as other exposures with other health consequences that must also be addressed. This paper will discuss options, limits and ideas for future research using standardized testing and evaluation methods to assess these other PPE options in an arc flash exposure.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117022038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies by high risk industries indicate that human error is often the root cause of incidents. This is certainly true in the electrical sector. Asking why five or six times what the true root cause of any electrical incident is a way to determine the corrective action plans that need to be implemented to ensure that it never happens again. Annex U, Human Performance and Workplace Electrical Safety, from CSA Z462-2015 will be referenced. This CSA 2015 Annex was sent as a Public Input (PI) to the NFPA 70E-2015 process and was accepted for the 2018 edition of NFPA 70E and is now in Informative Annex Q Human Performance and Workplace Electrical Safety.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128135520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To avoid these, standardization of processes, constant training and tight control are the actions typically adopted. However, such actions are limited by their strong dependence on human initiative. This research project proposes to apply the smart connected worker concept by using wearable sensing technologies to prevent, prior to near-miss, the unsafe actions/conditions defined in the DuPont pyramid. Sensing of parameters such as physiological (e.g., ECG, PPG, SpO2, etc.), physical (e.g., acceleration, electric field strength, location, etc.) and environmental (e.g., UV intensity and temperature) are applied to personal protective equipment (PPE's) and feed a mobile app and a cloud analytics platform to generate active (real-time) and reactive (offline) individual fitness statuses. As a result, accidents can be further prevented due to the addition of a new and remote layer of supervision; security procedures improved through data collection and processing; and operational performance enhanced due to increased connectivity.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132600733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This NFPA 70E table is one method for electrical workers to assess the potential severity component of arc-flash risk analysis in the United States and select suitable PPE. IEEE 1584 is the other main method used in North America to assess the severity component of an arc flash risk analysis for the purpose of selecting arc rated PPE. The same table in NFPA 70E is found in the equivalent Canadian standard for electrical safety, CSA Z462.","PeriodicalId":325388,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127865150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
