The newsbooks A Perfect diurnall of the passages in Parliament (paper published by Parliament) and Mercurius Pragmaticus, Communicating intelligence from all parts, touching all affaires, designes, humours, and conditions, throughout the kingdome, especially from Westminster and the head‑quartes (newspaper of supporters of King Charles I of England) were analysed and compared. The comparison was made for the years 1647–1649 with a focus on the Second English Civil War. In the case of A Perfect diurnall, the articles published between 3.06.1647 and 7.02.1649 — from the extradition of King Charles I of England to Commissioners to the King’s funeral. The other newsbook, Mercurius Pragmaticus, was published from 14.09.1947 to 1.05.1649. The issue of politics and the legal approach of the French state towards migrants has been hitherto treated marginally. This is confirmed by a 1935 report by the Ministry of the Interior. The strongest accusations and assaults were directed against Polish and Jewish legionnaires by the national press — including in the papers Polska Narodowa, Falanga and books like Kazimierz Dołega’s Żydzi w czasie walk o niepodległość Polski. War veterans were supposed to be idols and models for society, particularly youths. These were closely connected with contemporary domestic policy, which was dominated by a conflict between the monarch Zygmunt III Wasa and the Polish-Lithuanian nobility. This paper argues that this play is deeply implicated in the discursive processes of appropriating and understanding London’s shifting urban and social topographies. Abounding with topical and topographical allusions, the play has long drawn critical interest mainly for its documentary qualities and its exploitation of the short-lived theatrical vogue for ‘place-realism’.
