Whilst the studies that compose the body of cognitive mapping research provide both breadth and depth, it is clear that there are still many facets of spatial knowledge that remain unexamined or are in need of further investigation. Indeed, the volume of research within each sub-field is highly uneven, with some focuses receiving a disproportionate amount of attention. Moreover, most sub-fields are characterized by a set of divergent and competing findings and theories, each seeking to adequately explain how we learn, store, process and use spatial knowledge. Each of the contributors to this volume detailed a specific future agenda to address questions so far left unexplored or inadequately answered. In this final chapter we collate, ross-reference and add to their suggestions for future research to provide a comprehensive agenda that will help guide cognitive mapping research as we enter the new millennium. We have divided our discussion into three main sections: theoretical, methodological, application.","PeriodicalId":324966,"journal":{"name":"Cognitive Mapping","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130457885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

You have just simulated for yourself what it is like to be blind. Well, not quite: there are several important factors missing. Firstly, you knew all along that you could open your eyes at any minute if you ran into trouble (e.g., a large hard obstacle). A blind person does not have that option for recovering from a mistake. Secondly, you almost certainly used your visually derived mental 'map' of the room's layout to guide you. Think how much harder it would have been to do the same thing in an unfamiliar room. Thirdly, you drew on a set of spatial concepts and orientation skills developed across your life-span that involved vision as a major unifying sense; the very first time you, as an infant, watched your hand as you reached out for an object, you were already learning about space through vision.","PeriodicalId":324966,"journal":{"name":"Cognitive Mapping","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130582150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
