This article provided insights into hand washing facilities, students’ knowledge, and patronage of the facilities in basic schools in Ejura-Sekyeredumase Municipality of Ghana motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic. We pointed out the current state of handwashing facilities and knowledge of proper handwashing among basic schools in the second Covid-19 hotspot region.  The study spanned between November 2019 to March 2020. From pre Covid-19 period to the time (month) Ghana recorded its first case of Covid-19. The study was undertaken using well designed structured questionnaire, observation checklist and interviews. It involved randomly sampling 25 public schools and 5 private schools. From each of these 30 schools, 19 students and a teacher were selected randomly and purposively making a total of 600 respondents. Data obtained from the students and staff were compared for their effective relationships using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20. The Pearson Chi-Square test was used to show the effect size and the strength of relationship between variables. The results showed that the handwashing facilities were not enough for students and teachers. Many students rated availability of handwashing materials as good (66. 70%). There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between the availability of hand washing materials and patronage of the facility. Most students claimed water flowed always ( =1.27) with few reporting intermittent water availability (26.70%, SD=0.45). Generally, more students (76.80%) washed their hands with soap and water after visiting the toilet. There was a significant difference between students who knew germs and the number of times they practiced hand washing, X2(4, N=546) =13.26, P=0.01). However, the effect size was relatively small (Cramer’s V=0.15). Inadequate handwashing materials (42.13%) and forgetfulness from students (37.07%) were hindrances to effective handwashing. The government through the ministry of education should ensure all year- round provisions of hand washing facilities and materials coupled with continuous education and awareness to strengthen hand washing habit among the students.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82353783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of digital technology, our carbon footprint has significantly increased and caused ecological consequences. As gadgets get smaller and have more internal components, there is more trashes produced during manufacture. By 2023, more than 70% of the world's population will own a mobile phone. From the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the numerous ensuing lockdowns, there has been an exponential increase in the use of video transmission (streaming) all over the world. In fact, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), watching an hour of video streaming on Netflix entails emissions of 36gCO2.  Between 2020 and 2030, the overall amount of data transmission will increase fourteen times. Digital technologies can contribute up to 20% to net-zero energy, materials, and mobility reduction required by IEA by 2050. However, there aren't many summaries of the digital transformation of environmental sustainability. This review presents the implications of the digital world on environmental sustainability, including both beneficial and detrimental aspects. Some methods are based on the network and its energy consumption. The outcomes also show how changes in three key areas—waste management and handling, pollution prevention and control, and sustainable resource management—have preserved the environment. The footprints are also significantly smaller than previously predicted. While subscriptions and data traffic have continued to rise, the footprint of the ICT and E&M sectors has shrunk. As countless individuals are used to digital daily life, this study points out the challenges to govern this issue. This review also points out the potential and problems in this field, which tries to provide a vision for future research, based on the literature overview.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"154 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76735256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most solar panels are specified with Standard Test Condition (STC), but not all the locations are in agreement with the standard. These conditions are somehow misleading, as the values of solar radiation, temperature and air mass do not align across the full range of Earth surface. This observation encouraged the author to carryout comparative analysis to figure out whether the temperature and solar radiation data available in Mubi during 2000-2020 years align with that of manufacturer's STC specification or not. A time series analysis was adopted to compare the result obtained with STC values. It was found that the available average temperature was 28.83°C and the direct solar radiation was 3278.93W/m2 in Mubi, which was higher than the STC values. At the same time, the values are capable for harvesting efficient energy, when compared to the respective 25°C and 1000W/m2 of STC specification. The result also recommends poly-crystalline, thin-film or amorphous silicon as most suitable PV modules types to be adopted in Mubi region, because of their less tolerance to high solar radiation and temperature.Energy, Mubi, Radiation, Solar, Temperature","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"AES-23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84596968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Waste management is one of the basic essential services provided by local authorities and regulated bodies. Solid waste management includes collection, segregation, sorting, treatment, transportation, and final disposal. Along with the formal sector, the informal bodies are also active in Nepal. Informal waste workers are contributing to waste minimization and promoting environmental justice by involving in recycling activities. This study aimed to explore the five sustainable components (Human, Social, Physical, Financial, and Natural) of informal waste workers. The study was undertaken in the Kathmandu Valley by qualitative narrative inquiry. It was found that the income of informal waste workers varied, was unstructured, and was unpredictable. There is a need for the personal safety of waste workers to improve their quality of life. The study found that the workers are most vulnerable in terms of social capital, as they have poor relationships with their communities. It is important to incorporate them into the waste management system and acknowledge their contributions to the environment.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"93 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89451365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nandy","doi":"10.3126/josem.v2i1.53119","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3126/josem.v2i1.53119","url":null,"abstract":"It is a matter of apprehension that wealthy countries are contributing huge to global emission and more responsible for producing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. There is direct intervention of economic activities like industrialization, urbanization and infrastructure development over carbon footprint across the world and economically developed nations tend to have higher footprints as compared to less developed countries. India, the second largest populous nation is facing dual challenges, one hand, the need to fulfill the energy requirement for development and on the other hand, the global climate challenge. The country is third largest emitter of CO2 and fifth largest economy by nominal GDP in the world. But its per capita emission is much lower than that of developed countries and even it is below the average per capita emission of many developing countries. The present paper is an attempt to map the carbon footprints across the country in respect to the economic status. The paper reveals that there exist huge disparities of economic resources and developmental activities, and based on these the carbon footprint is also varied widely. The footprint is significantly high in developed and urbanized states across the country. Economically developed western and southern part emits more than the underdeveloped region of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha. A correlation has been drawn to map the carbon footprint per capita in respect to poverty ratio and a negative relationship exists among most of the districts, as higher carbon footprint has been reported in the lower poverty stricken districts. The overall low per-capita carbon footprint of the country is due to its huge population is living with nominal amount of energy. The fossil fuel is the major source of energy in the country and for equitable economic development, the huge energy is needed. Hence, to meet the global climate challenge, the country can accomplish the energy requirement by reducing emission of conventional sources and look forward for renewable energy resources, so that the development should not be hindered.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85537021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This set-up is the most affecting factor which deteriorates the environmental health of the lake. In this reason, this study was conducted to assess the environmental sustainability of the lake and to generate policy development which is appropriate for implementation. The researcher collected data through water sample testing supported by survey instrument and focus group discussion. There were 200 respondents of the survey and it was found out that there is a consistent trend of those who rated no impact  to low impact to all the sustainability indicators dictated. The results proved that the mandated agencies were ineffective and that the programs for re-vegetation, conducting fertilizing, seeding and plant tree seedling around the hydropower were not sufficient to keep the preservation of forest around the plant. Also, the water quality test results revealed that there was a presence of fecal coliforms, indicators of contamination of water in Lake Lanao. Thus, after data were extracted, the policy development was designed in focus of Environmental Excellency and Watershed Management.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83489192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a lack of research evidence on the perception of local communities for PFM program intervention. The purpose of the study was to exmine local community perceptions and attitudes towards PFM intervention. In this study, 131 households were surveyed and data were collected through the household survey; key informant interviews (KIIs), focus group discussion (FGD). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results show that the households perceived that there is no deforestation after PFM intervention. This increased species diversity, forest coverage, productivity of the forest, number of valuable species and address environmental degradation. Respondents that PFM program has opportunities to change a negative attitude to a positive through giving of power to the local community, enables to exclude non-PFM members, and creates a sense of belongingness to use and conservation of forest. The finding demonstrated that households generate their incomes from different sources and the share of forest income is the second. The different actions such as better protection of existing forests, access to alternative livelihood, access to better knowledge were suggested to increase the existing benefits and management of PFM. The finding of the study suggests further improvement of local communities’ perception and attitudes as well as providing alternatives to improve forest conditions and livelihood.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87730271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these data are lacking or not studied in Bac Lieu, especially in rural areas. Therefore, the study was conducted to determine the domestic waste composition and evaluate the factors related to the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) level of the community in domestic solid waste management in Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. The results of domestic solid waste samples collected at households showed that the waste was composed of organic (73.8%), recyclables (15.7%), hazardous waste (0.7%), and others (9.9%). Plastic bags (42.7%) and papers (30.5%) were predominant in the recyclables. The interview of 150 households indicated that the majority of respondents had an average level of knowledge (46%), and attitude (49.3%). However, 46% of respondents had an inadequate level of practice. In addition, the study observed that respondents have a good level of knowledge and attitude that leads to good practice. The Chi-square test showed that the KAP level of the respondents is influenced by demographic factors including age, education, occupation and income (p<0.05). In which, education level and age were the significant influencing factors. The results indicated that education for improving the community’s knowledge and attitudes in domestic solid management should pay more attention on the population aged over 60 years and those with occupations belonging to agriculture and housework.","PeriodicalId":32450,"journal":{"name":"IJEMS Indonesian Journal of Environmental Management and Sustainability","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80983579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
