The abundance and richness of tenebrionids in arid zones is facilitated by specific physiological, morphological, and behavioural traits, such as limited activity patterns or the use of suitable microhabitats. Activity patterns of tenebrionid beetles have been investigated mainly in large-size species, but the response of small species remains basically unknown. Considering this, we developed a study in a Caribbean beach in Costa Rica with the aim of identifying daily activity patterns of Cybotus estriatus (LeConte, 1878), a darkling beetle of 2–3 mm in length relatively frequent in the circum-Caribbean beaches. In addition, we assessed how vegetation cover influences the abundance of this small tenebrionid species. Observations were performed between 7:00 h to 18:30 h, within a range of temperatures from 28°C to 47°C. Cybotus estriatus exhibits a bimodal activity pattern similar to those observed for other tenebrionids. It remains active at a temperature range of 35°C to 44°C, but shows a higher activity around 10:00 h and 15:30 h, at temperatures between 38°C and 42°C. We also found a strong dependence of C. estriatus on beach vegetation, providing the first data on the effect of vegetation cover in small tropical beetles inhabiting sand beaches. La description du stade larvaire complète la description initiale faite par Hopkins (1952) qui a attribué à tort cette larve à l’espèce Aedes (Coetzeemyia) fryeri (Theobald, 1912), comme nous avons pu l’établir sur la base de séquences nucléotidiques. Les auteurs décrivent aussi la larve d’Ae. fryeri et synthétisent les connaissances sur la distribution de cette espèce, principalement rencontrée sur les zones côtières dans l’ouest de l’océan Indien. An annotated list of 62 species, belonging to 41 genera and 10 families, is given. Fourteen species are newly recorded for the Oriental region. Moreover, at least 14 taxa are rediscovered in whole Morocco more than 30 years after their last record. Finally, we add new distribution records for the previously known species, including pest ones such as Schistocerca gregaria and Dociostaurus maroccanus. In a context of mainly arid steppe landscape, the richness of stations increases with annual rainfall and follows the Mid-Domain effect with altitude. We found a clear dominance of the Palearctic elements, mainly Mediterranean, with a high proportion of endemic species. Except for C. japonicum, the others are reported for the first time to use S. madraspatanum nests. Antepipona biguttata is considered both an invader and a re-user, and the other species are only re-users of the nests of the mud dauber wasp. While A. troglodytes utilizes old nest cells of S. madraspatanum and divides each cell into its two nest cells, the other two vespid species excavate their own nest burrows in S. madraspatanum nests and build their nest cells at the terminal of the burrows. Chalybion japonicum uses old intact nest cells of S. madraspatanum. Amegilla zonata digs its own nest, builds the cells in the nests of the mud dauber wasp, and uses them as nesting and overwintering sites. Il traite en particulier des espèces les plus petites, proches de Tarachomantis caldwellii. La diagnose du genre et des sous-genres Tarachomantis et Madamantis sont redonnées, avec description du sous-genre Comoromantis n. subgen. pour accueillir, entre autres, les espèces endémiques des Comores. Vingt-trois espèces sont distinguées au sein du genre : douze décrites antérieurement, deux réhabilitées (T. roseinervis et T. brunneri), et neuf espèces nouvellement décrites (T. nana n. sp., T. humeris n. sp., T. insidentes n. sp., T. gigantea n. sp., T. darwini n. sp., T. royi n. sp., T. famakiloha n. sp., T. cliquennoisi n. sp., T. hugeli n. sp.). La femelle de T. (Madamantis) tsaratanana est décrite. Des clés sont présentées en français et en anglais pour distinguer les genres de Paramantini malgaches et les espèces d’après leur morphologie et leurs genitalia mâles. This work describes in detail the myrmecomorphy of early nymphs of Acontista concinna (Perty), based on ample material reared from oothecae collected in the field. Mimic models are proposed, and the possible occurrence of transformational mimicry is discussed. The 1st instar nymphs are defended as mimics of Pseudomyrmex gibbinotus (Forel) (Formicidae), but sudden and intense changes in colour and size during the transition to the 2nd instar make them similar to larger ants, namely Camponotus Mayr. This is maintained throughout the 3rd instar, but disappears on the 4th instar, giving place to typical mantid nymphs.
