This vehicular terminal employs a mechanically-steered antenna, and can support either digital links up to 64 kbps or analog links. The Army has now contracted JPL to modify this terminal for Army demonstration purposes. The AMT hardware will be mounted on a High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). In addition to providing standard baseline AMT capabilities, a coupling to a Single Channel Ground Air Radio System (SINCGARS) radio will enable secure command and control on the move. The rationale, design, features, and planned demonstration program for this Army AMT (AAMT) are discussed in this paper.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133247629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous solutions involved high peak power solid-state laser designs and constellation rerouting of data during the crossing. With the introduction of higher power sources and with the proven space qualified techniques to reduce the background flux levels impinging on the optical detectors, laser diode based direct detection laser crosslinks can now operate effectively through the solar disk. The authors discuss the techniques employed and illustrate performance levels that can be expected for a moderate data rate laser crosslink system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122496076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the same technology can be used on post, for a secure WPBX, secure wireless access or secure cellular communication. Thus, secure, wireless, reliable voice and data (i.e., multimedia) communication can be achieved on post without wiring the post. The same system can be moved onto the battlefield to provide secure, wireless, cellular service to a moving base station. Mobility, in this case, also means flexibility since if a base station is destroyed, the mobile users can, within 1 bit, handoff to an alternate moving base station. The authors show that a commercially developed technology, B-CDMA, used for cellular telephony, wireless PBX and wireless access can, simply, by changing the PN code (TRANSEC) and adding encryption (COMSEC), be changed into a highly secure military system for use on-post and in the moving battlefield of the future. Thus, B-CDMA is the perfect NDI system for use by the DoD.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124193724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MSE packet network (MPN) was designed by GTE Government Systems Corporation as an overlay extension to the US Army's state-of-the-art MSE digital communications system. The packet switch network (PSN) overlay was implemented over the existing infrastructure without impairing the network's voice grade of service. The MPN is currently the largest packet switched network in the world with packet switching equipment deployed throughout the tactical signal units of the Army. The authors outline the requirements of a mobile packet PSN and then provide a description of the unique functions and capabilities that the MPN provides in order to meet those requirements.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117050448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This band is subject to interference that varies with time and frequency, due to varying transmission and channel propagation conditions. To make efficient use of the available channel resource an adaptive frequency hopping algorithm has been implemented by means of a neural network to make use of the available channel information from the link quality analysis (LQA) in selecting the frequency slot in contrast to having a uniformly distrinuted selection process. The algorithm proposed combines the advantages of low probability of detection during transmission and reduced fading and interference disturbance when detecting transmitted signals. The disturbances not eliminated by the channel selection is further reduced by using block codes with first order soft decision decoding. The results on residual bit error rate and average signal to interference ratio are promising with an overall reduction in bit error rate of more than two orders of magnitude at moderate signal to noise and signal to interference ratios for a course channel model based upon the results by P. J. Laycock et al. (1988).<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116652595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The architecture takes advantage of the knockout principle to obtain tradeoff between the hardware complexity and the cell loss probability. Components of the switch include a Batcher sorter, an address resolution module, a banyan network, and output buffers. The hardware complexity of the switch, O(LNlog(LN)) where L is the number of cells allowed into an output queue in a single time slot and N is the number of ports, is comparable to the input queuing Batcher-banyan switch (O(Nlog/sup 2/N)), but performance is consistent with other more complex output queuing architectures.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115619318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The equalizer structure is composed of two filters, a feed-forward filter and a feed-back filter. The inputs to the feed-forward and feed-back filters are the received signal sequence and the detected symbols, respectively. Both filters are updated by a stochastic gradient algorithm in proportion to an estimated error based on a Gaussian cluster formation technique. During equalization, the QPSK symbol constellation is modeled as Gaussian clusters centered around the transmitted symbols. Both equalizer filters are updated to minimize the variance of the Gaussian clusters, thereby reconstructing the transmitted symbols. The blind nature of the DFBE algorithm makes it very attractive for mobile communications applications where the reliable transmission of signals through rapidly changing multipath fading channels with deep spectral nulls is a challenging problem yet to be resolved.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"87 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116304660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By means of powerful coding techniques these systems are able to restore the transmitted information also under adverse transmission conditions when several of the frequencies in use are jammed or fading. Although efficient against jamming and interference of short duration, these schemes may be substantially improved upon in a typical HF environment with slow fading and a large number of narrowband, slowly varying interferers. A straightforward adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) scheme for duplex links is proposed and analyzed. In such a link, link quality measurements are fed back to the transmitter such that bad frequencies may be avoided. The system is analyzed based on an extension of the HF interference model presented by Gott et al (1991). The tradeoff between the amount of feedback information and link throughput as well as the impact of feedback reliability is investigated. Results show that an AFH system has the potential of surviving in extremely congested environments at very low transmitter power levels. Both the anti-jam and the LPI properties of these systems are very promising.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":323612,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of MILCOM '93 - IEEE Military Communications Conference","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116304896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
