Using a quantitative approach, measurements were made of the metacognitive growth questionnaire, which was developed based on the metacognitive process theory, which consists of three, parts: the process of raising awareness, the process of monitoring/evaluating, and the process of controlling/regulating. A total of 30 students were randomly selected to be used as test subjects for the questionnaire instrument. The validity of the questionnaire items is known by using the bivariate product-moment correlation test. The reliability of the questionnaire is known by using Alpha Cronbach. The results showed that as many as 40 questionnaire items were declared valid, and overall, the questionnaire items were declared reliable. Thus, as many as 40 questionnaire items can be used to measure of students' metacognition growth in writing.","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42381655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are still very limited scientific articles published about university students' foreign language writing anxiety and the causes in the Indonesian university context. Therefore, this study's main purpose was to analyze students' anxiety in EFL writing and its causes. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method. The study subjects were chosen from the first-year students of the Accounting Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Palopo academic year 2021-2022, which consists of three classes. Two types of questionnaires were used for collecting the data. The first questionnaire was based on Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) developed by Cheng (2014). The questionnaire consisted of 21 items designed to assess students' English writing anxiety. The second questionnaire, the Second Language Writing Fear Inventory (CSLWFI), derived from Rezaei and Jafari's (2014), which was adopted to find out the causes of a feeling of anxiety in writing, consisted of ten questions. SPSS ver. 20 was used to analyze the gathered data. The findings revealed that the student's English writing anxiety was significant, and the key causes were poor understanding of writing concepts, linguistic obstacles, insufficient writing skill practice, and time restrictions.","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46360136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most important problems facing translation are the ambiguities in vocabulary and sentence structure. In a division, there are five important types of lexical ambiguity (categorical ambiguities, homophones, homographs, polysemy and transitive ambiguity), and two important types of structural ambiguity (real structural ambiguities and systemic ambiguities). Machine translation (MT), which is a part of the computer-based field of natural language processing (NLP) in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence, is considered as one of the automatic techniques that that convert unstructured text into structured data, and by converting text into information, it has been able to apply further analysis to the data to extract useful information. In this article, which was compiled in a library method, a theoretical plan has been proposed to resolve the issues surrounding the meaning of words in the machine translation of the Quran, the purpose of which is to help better understand the meaning of the words of the Quran, by taking advantage of the context clues and styles of the expressions. In the proposed method, a more suitable equivalent word is chosen in the target language by taking advantage of the context rule and text mining techniques, and referring to it. In this plan, the context is considered in the scale of words, which can be developed to other types if the conditions are met. In short, this plan has two steps: prioritizing (weighting) the adjacent words next to each other (any word within the","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85294124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each disposition will be expressed in its language. The poet says his ideology by selecting the linguistic structures that regulate the poem, including the hidden and apparent references in the text of the words and codes, and by choosing a specific type of syntactic structures and aesthetic-rhetorical secrets. The layer of thought of the style is investigated as part of the layered stylistics approach, which is employed to realize this ideology. Ibn al-Arandas is one of the greatest Shiites and devout poets of the ninth century AH. Lamia is one of his most well-known compositions; analyzing it from a stylistic perspective helps the audience to comprehend the composer's thought process and the intricate relationship between literary techniques and external characteristics and themes. Consequently, using the descriptive-analytical method, this article examines the written principles of thought by Ibn al-Arandas across five lexical, syntactic, rhetorical, phonetic, and ideological layers. Exploring the meanings and structure of the verses and the reflection of ideology in each of the layers above led the authors to conclude that the role of the rhetorical layer was complex. Comparing Lamia to the characteristics of a literary text and an ideological text along five axes revealed no apparent conflict between literature and ideology. Lamia is not simply a thought or a literary text but serves both purposes. In addition, based on the analysis of ideology and artistic individuality in this poem, the ideology that governs Lamia is founded on significant collective values and insists on collective opinions and shared beliefs. Ibn al-Arandas uses literature to convey and strengthen his ideology to the greatest extent feasible.","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80220833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blind compliance and obedience are among one of the characteristics he has portrayed in his stories. This article adopts Karen Horney’s theory to analyze the characters of two obedient women in The Darling and Anyuta . Compliance is a type of neurosis about which psychoanalysts, such as Freud, Horney, and Fromm have proposed theories. This research used Horney’s theory because it is well-suited for the stories analyzed and the method of characterization. Horney believed that many aspects of personality and neuroses may be determined by environmental and social contexts rather than a person's biological drives. She classified neurotics into three personality types, namely moving toward people, moving against people, and moving away from people. The present research mainly focuses on moving toward people with its components of affection, submissiveness, and the need for a dominant partner. The method of qualitative content analysis was used throughout the research. The analysis shows that the components of compliance are more prominent among women living in a patriarchal society, the consequences of which influenced the two female characters in The Darling and Anyuta .","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89776231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sociology examines literature as a social phenomenon from multiple perspectives, including literary work, author, consumer, point of view, and other social data. It demonstrates the connection between literature and the neighboring social indicators. From a global perspective, literary sociology has significantly impacted literary and critical movements worldwide, and literary sociology can be subdivided into numerous subfields due to the breadth of its activities and topics. Satirical is one of the literary genres in Arabic literature, a distinct branch of literature with social content. The purpose of a satirical protest poem is to express the problems and disorders of society, which the poet attempts to solve and rectify by exaggerating the ugliness, flaws, problems, and heterogeneous phenomena in the social life of humans. Since the impact of poetry on the heart is much greater than that of prose, and among poetic purposes, satirical has a greater effect than other poetic purposes due to the induction of content into the audience's consciousness in the form of comedy and mockery, and poetry has a much more significant effect on the heart than prose. The source of satire is two emotions: rage and revulsion. When the poet's instinct of displeasure surfaces, he is repulsed, and if something disgusts him, it arouses his rage; he is then compelled to ridicule whatever disgusted or offended him. Ahmad Shawqi is a precise and inventive poet who has used humor and satire to express discontent through illustration and literary skills. His humor is sometimes used to complain about the occupier and","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75003382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, the syntactic category is a verb and the hypothesis is that as the verb dowr z d n ( to turn around ) is a polysemous motion verb in Persian, it is expected that just as there is an association among its meanings, there will also be a relation among the semantic frames evoked by it. In order to test the hypothesis, the findings of this research, which are composed of different situations where the verb was used, were extracted from the Persian Corpus of Bijankhan at the first stage. Then, the duplicate cases were eliminated so that only one type of each situation would remain. Having been translated into English and searched through the FrameNet database, the Persian cases alongside their frames were compared and analysed; as a result of which, it was identified that the hypothesis was confirmed, as there is a semantic association among the semantic frames the polysemous motion verb in question evokes-revolving around an object or deviating from the main path.","PeriodicalId":32337,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Applied Studies in Language","volume":"121 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84936783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In caricature, meaning and wit are derived from two semiotic expressions, either verbal and visual or solely visual. The three language techniques of exaggeration, contradiction, and metaphor contribute to creating humor in caricatures, which result from the interaction of verbal and visual elements and the use of visual metaphor. Another abundant source of non-linguistic metaphor representation is the caricature. By examining the phenomena of language, art, politics, and religion, as well as other objective manifestations of metaphor, it is possible to uncover ideology and the human cognitive system. In contrast, the theory of critical analysis of speech seeks to investigate caricature as a social action related to power, ideology, and discourse. Due to caricatures' content compression, brevity, and interaction between language and image, caricatures are quick and straightforward methods to process a message. The audience's unanimity in receiving the message causes them to adopt the desired perspective. Through the use of humor and image literacy, the audience's self-awareness and conceptual literacy will be enhanced. The representation of ideology in political caricatures is founded on two sociological perspectives and linguistic analysis. This study examined the depiction of ideology in political caricatures from the Persian Constitutional Revolution to the present, focusing on significant events such as the July 21, 1952 uprising, Iran's Islamic Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War, nuclear energy and sanctions, and resistance to the economy.
