In this work, a novel phase based SNR estimation method for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems transmitting over the MVN is proposed. By exploiting the fact that under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) conditions the phase errors at the receiver are normally distributed when the real SNR is over 10dB, the method estimates the SNR by only making use of the signal's phase samples. The knowledge of the current channel's transfer function as well as the current transmission power is not necessary for the SNR estimation, which simplifies the calculations and increases the method's applicability in practical systems communicating within the MVN environment. Immunity against constant phase errors and phase jitter caused by noise, the MVN channel or/and realistic OFDM synchronization count to further beneficial properties of the proposed estimator.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115295609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed estimators, the signal subspace and the noise subspace are identified through decomposition of pseudo covariance matrix of received time domain samples, unlike the conventional subspace tracking which is based on the decomposition of covariance matrix. The least square (LS) technique together with the identified signal subspace are then used to derive the channel estimate in time domain using pilot OFDM symbols. The proposed estimators do not assume the knowledge of statistics of colored noise. The simulations show that, the proposed pilot-aided subspace tracking channel estimators outperform conventional LS based channel estimators, however, the performance gain is degraded with the increase of number of multipath. Further, the proposed estimators require the number of delay path known as a prior.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123489957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The container ship studied in this paper is a type of cargo-carrying ships. The reefer containers on the container ship have been monitored by using PLC over the three-phase 440V line. Since not only reefer containers but also a lot of equipment are connected to the three-phase 440V electric power-line, the obtained speed and quality of the PLC system have been so poor that improvement had been required. To improve the performance, the introduction of the wideband PLC technology is considered in this paper because the conventional PLC system is based on the narrowband PLC technology. There are few reports which describe the channel characteristics of cargo-carrying ships. Although the authors had been measuring the characteristics of 100V lines in the ships since 2007, the characteristics of 440V lines had not measured as yet. In this paper, the measurement results of the transmission characteristics in three-phase 440V electric power-lines of the container ships are explained and modeled. Two transmission modes, differential and common, were examined in the measurement. The results show that it will be possible to perform stable and high -speed PLC systems over long distances using the 3 phase 440V power-line of cargo ships if the differential transmission mode will be used.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123659438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the unintentional-radiation is the serious problem for ship applications because the PLC system must coexist with the emergency communication system and shortwave broadcasting services. In this paper, a power control method of PLC modems depending on the radiation strength is proposed and examined in a training ship. It is proposed to use an antenna for shortwave radios and a wideband receiver (WBR) to measure the radiation strength. It is shown that the sensitivity of the WBR is 17dB better than that of a spectrum analyzer. And by using the antenna, the WBR can be set up at any cabin in ship to measure the radiation strength. The proposed power-control algorithm consists of two modes, silent and power-control modes. After the environmental noise level is measured in the silent mode, the power level of PLC modems which cause the radiation is lowered to be the same level as the environmental noise level. If modems do not cause the radiation, their power level is raised as much as possible to guarantee the maximum possible throughput under the EMC regulation. By executing the silent mode occasionally, the controlled power level is adapted to the environmental noise level.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"4 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128808107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, asynchronous impulsive noise has been known to be one of the strongest impediments to error-free transmission over PLC channels. Most work aimed at ameliorating the degradation due to impulsive noise considers the noise impulses to be independent. In a realistic PLC channel, however, this is rarely true. This paper is concerned with the performance limits on communication over powerline channels where the noise has memory and is modeled using a partitioned Markov chain (PMC) that has been found to be well suited to describe the bursty nature of impulses of the low voltage PLC channel. In particular, expressions are derived for the cutoff rate and the bit error rate of a convolutionally coded narrowband system. They are then verified by comparing with simulation results employing typical PLC parameters, proving the utility of the expressions as a design tool.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130659327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we investigate passive coupling circuits as an alternative to transformer-capacitor couplers, as the coupling transformer is a relatively expensive component. Various other sub-fields of PLC such as modulation and coding have received a lot of attention in recent years, whereas the sub-fields of coupling, filtering, impedance adaptation and protection have lagged behind. Most electronic circuits, especially filter circuits have been around for years and perhaps their design is sometimes viewed as exhausted. However, the nature of the power-line grid requires careful consideration, as sensitive modems are to be connected to the power-line network, via these coupling circuits. These couplers further have to withstand the strain of relatively large voltages and currents. Hence, sufficient time spent, designing and selecting coupling circuitry elements is essential to avoid unnecessary attenuation as well as possible damage to the more expensive communication circuitry.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"3 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132068170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Advanced Metering Infrastructure is a simple example of such a system where all the meters on a certain grid must be able to provide the necessary information to the master head end within a very short duration (fraction of a second for real time load control). Wireless solutions for the smart grid systems have been implemented, but cannot access all grid locations, especially enclosed ones. In this paper, we present an interactive, OFDMA based communication system optimized for operation over the low voltage power lines in the CENELEC bands A and B. A channel model representing statistical time-varying, and frequency selective powergrid channels and noise is presented. Using this model, an OFDMA based transceiver is developed that is capable of providing smart grid like access capacity to the head end connected to multiple meters. The transceiver is optimized based on the channel model and the characteristics derived from the structure of the grid.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127817096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a multiple-input single-output (MISO)-SC system for narrowband PLC is devised and the applicability of feedback channel information into the MISO-SC system is considered. Simulation results with outdoor PLC channels and additive noise composed of background and impulsive components indicate that the MISO-SC system with partial feedback channel information can surpass the performances of MISO-SC without feedback and SISO-SC system with and without feedback channel.","PeriodicalId":321296,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on Power Line Communications and Its Applications","volume":"28 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129373962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
