In examining how physical bodies are made, it also explores the meanings of ‘fat’ and obesity in sumo and Japanese culture. As professional sumo relies on a patron system, chanko commensality not only redefines the meanings of the ‘work’ of the wrestler but also provides a route to a post-retirement career.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126172941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is based on a multi-dimensional model whereby various factors and conditions are considered in relation to socialization in order to gain rich understanding. Relevant social perspectives and theories are also used to explain the research findings. The study aims to enhance understanding of these students' socialization process as they participate in formal and informal sporting activities. It is hoped that it can also offer valuable insights into the management of a school's sport programme and increase appreciation of the value of sport participation in school life. Finally, it can also contribute to our understanding of the problems young people often face in socializing in an international setting.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131278078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Azkals – the moniker given to the national men's soccer team – fashioned a historic achievement at the regional AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010 in generating a soccer frenzy in the Philippines, a mania labelled the ‘Azkals Fever’, which increased consciousness of the sport in the country. Based entirely on content analysis of both print and electronic literature over a two-year period (2010–2012), this paper highlights how the ‘Azkals Fever’ phenomenon has come to redefine the country's historiography. Given the lack of scholarly studies on soccer in the Philippines, this paper argues for a research agenda on the sport – a position that is in agreement with Ben-Porat's (2000) suggestion that the history of sport is very much the history of the society in which it is engulfed.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"213 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121016831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative interviews were used to understand the experiences of eight American basketball players and the study adopts neo-classical economics as its theoretical framework. A total of six players attached importance to getting a good contract as professional players. One player emphasized the desire to experience a different culture. Another player had emigrated to continue playing basketball at a high-level and enjoy a comfortable life style. By demonstrating that many American players migrate to overseas countries because of disparities in salary between professional basketball leagues, the study provides evidence of the relevance of neo-classical economics to the motivations of professional basketball players in the international market.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132466362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a combination of literature review, interviews with experts and fieldwork investigation, the article offers a systematic analysis of the current condition of the mass sports volunteer service in China. During the research, we found that the mass sports volunteer service focuses on a restricted field and that there is a lack of effective incentive measures. There is a need to rely on community organizations to carry out mass sports volunteer activities, to improve the mass sports volunteer organization management system and to pay more attention to the stimulus of volunteers during the development of mass sports volunteer services for the future.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123244713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides an account of the intended messages, interpretations and identifications associated with the production, representation and consumption of the Fuwa mascots. Through in-depth analyses of Fuwa at each stage, it reveals a broad contextual understanding of the legacy, tradition, complexities and uniqueness in a secluded circuit of culture within Chinese society. By reconstructing Fuwa in the circuit of culture, this paper further attempts to address the question of whether hosting the modern Olympics was able to bring change to China.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115417093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rugby is widely described as Fiji's ‘national’ sport, with a considerable degree of social significance. That rugby is listed alongside two powerful institutions (ratuism and religion) in the life of indigenous Fijians is a clear indication of the central cultural importance of the sport. In this paper, drawing upon the existing literature as well as our own research data, we outline the key aspects of the dominant rugby discourse in relation to ratuism and religion, along with exploring some of rugby's main alternative cultural ‘functions’. Employing a cultural studies approach, our main goal is to interpret and (re)present some of the chief alternative discourses in Fiji rugby and to discuss their role in the formation of dominant and emergent cultural practices.","PeriodicalId":320773,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131135721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
