Herein, we describe behavioral changes made by students in clinical work environments that promoted collaborative practices, directly resulting from participating in an IPE activity. METHOD Health professions students in their clinical years of training participated in student-run interprofessional care conferences as a required curricular component. Embedded within these interprofessional experiences, we instituted a behavior challenge. Students were encouraged to enact an action they could change in themselves from something learned in the session that would promote collaborative practice in patient-care environments. Students documented their intention at the end of the IPE session; after the clerkship/clinical, they described outcomes or barriers encountered. Thematic analysis of those behavior changes/outcomes was performed. RESULTS Follow-up information from 65 medical (MD) and 22 nursing (RN) students at the conclusion of clerkship/ clinicals indicated that 54 MD and 6 RN students implemented a behavior change. Intentionality in terms of seeking out other healthcare members was most often the behavior that was cited. Three broad categories of outcomes emerged from this behavior: improved team relationships/respect, improved communication between team members, and positive impacts on patient care. DISCUSSION This study demonstrates the impact and transferability of an IPE activity in pre-licensure students that promotes behavioral changes and supports collaborative practice in patient care settings. These new models of care require new models of learning; interprofessional education and training are identified as key solutions. How IPE supports the development of the current workforce for integrated care remains unclear. PURPOSE The aim of this research is to explore the role of interprofessional education in training current healthcare providers for integrated healthcare. METHOD Guided by the Arksey and O’Malley (2005) methodological framework for scoping reviews, searches were conducted in CINAHL, MEDLINE, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, and Scholars Portal electronic databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and data from the relevant articles were categorized and reported narratively. RESULTS The analysis of 32 articles highlighted four key themes: (1) IPE is needed as a foundation for working in integrated care; (2) IPE builds competencies for integrated care; (3) IPE acts as a catalyst for improving team functioning and patient care; and (4) IPE generates practice change among disciplines and agencies. CONCLUSIONS IPE plays a unique and important role in training health and social care providers to work in integrated care and can be described metaphorically as “a bridge to integrated care.” Findings offer important implications for continuing IPE and interprofessional practice within integrated models of care.","PeriodicalId":320540,"journal":{"name":"Health, Interprofessional Practice and Education","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127403817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, the impact of academic level, gender and race on student attitudes about IPE is not known, particularly when students from a diverse range of health profession programs participate together in introductory IPE experiences. METHODS A sequenced, two-part introductory IPE experience comprising a 90 minute online module followed by a 2-hour face-to-face event was delivered to health science students on three campuses at a large Midwestern university. Student attitudes about IPE based on SPICE-R2 scores were compared before and after the online module and after the in-person event. Paired t-tests were used to determine differences between time points, and linear regression was used to estimate the effects of academic level, gender and race. RESULTS The online course had a significant, positive impact on all students’ attitudes about IPE with the greatest changes for the Roles subdomain.","PeriodicalId":320540,"journal":{"name":"Health, Interprofessional Practice and Education","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132076769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS In Phase 1, a single embedded case study design was utilized to identify the organizational contextual factors most important to successful IPC. In Phase 2, a quantitative survey was administered to primary care team members in 10 organizations to objectively measure the relationship between contextual factors identified in Phase 1 and IPC. RESULTS In Phase 1, organizational contextual factors deemed most important included team structure and resources, including staff, time, and communication tools; supportive, patient-centered culture, including team member support and expectations for IPC as the way to provide the best care to patients; leadership, including organizational leadership support and provider leadership; and organizational structure and resources, including status as a federally qualified health center (FQHC) and academic facility. In Phase 2, statistically significant, positive relationships were found between IPC and team member support, provider leadership, team resources, clan culture, perceived organizational support, and patient-centered values. CONCLUSIONS The findings support the importance of organizational context for IPC and suggest that organizational culture and leadership hold particular importance for IPC success.","PeriodicalId":320540,"journal":{"name":"Health, Interprofessional Practice and Education","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123820534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
