{"title":"The Matrixial Screen Encounter: theorising the inter-subjective gaze in the documentary practice of Kim Longinotto","authors":"Jolene Alexandria Mairs Dyer","doi":"10.16995/os.8121","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.16995/os.8121","url":null,"abstract":"This article applies Ettinger’s (2001) notion of the matrixial to the documentary practice of Kim Longinotto. It considers this in relation to what I term the matrixial screen encounter, a model that expands the individualistic framing of the unitary auteur and acts as a counter to the notion of the impartial observer within the context of observational documentary. It applies this model to a scene from Longinotto and Mir-Hosseini’s 1998 documentary, Divorce Iranian Style and demonstrates how the matrixial screen encounter offers a way of mapping and considering the inter-connected, inter-subjective gazes, or layers of power within the scene, which are predominantly female and feminist. It concludes that the matrixial screen encounter provides a way of re-thinking the unitary, authoritative gaze of the auteur and the supposed impartiality of the camera-as-observer – reinforced by the term observational documentary - where the screen itself becomes a ‘locus of mediation’ at which various matrixes, gazes or layers of power, meet.","PeriodicalId":320521,"journal":{"name":"Open Screens","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126706903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This video essay constitutes an illustrative example of this practice, showing how Lebanese woman-led film Caramel (2007) is taught at SOAS, University of London to emphasise the crucial role of sound in narrative while rethinking the film canon and encouraging critical reflection on the gaze. By creatively compiling encounters between two characters in the film, the video essay shows two women gazing at each other in ways that evoke a romantic relationship, even if their contact stays in the hair salon. While there is barely any dialogue, the extra-diegetic music forges an intimate atmosphere. The decoding of these moments is shaped by the context of censorship in Lebanon, where explicit representations of same-sex relationships could be punished by law. In this video essay, I suggest that sound helps represent a queer gaze between the two characters, subverting both heteronormativity and patriarchal society, and in so doing, it also queers the audience’s gaze. Caramel thus serves as an excellent case study of the possibilities of sound in film, and of film as sound art.\u0000","PeriodicalId":320521,"journal":{"name":"Open Screens","volume":"393 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134323462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bayman","doi":"10.16995/os.8010","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.16995/os.8010","url":null,"abstract":"This essay explores the idea of evil through its relationship to ideas of justice and representations of suffering. It does so to consider the particularity of the giallo genre both in relation to the wider detective and horror genres of which it is a hybrid, and to the development of Italian cinema in the post-war decades. In its delirious depictions of a hellish modernity the giallo overturns faith both in Catholic tradition and in reason. By rejecting a moral standpoint the giallo represents a historic turning point in Italian popular culture. While maintaining the imagery and symbolic reference points of a Catholic sensibility, gialli discard all interest in moral improvement to indulge instead their one primary purpose, enjoyment.","PeriodicalId":320521,"journal":{"name":"Open Screens","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132801922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It asks what structures or limits these films propose within which sex and love can flourish. How do these films depict desire and fantasy as parts of sexuality? It addresses in particular how fantasy is conceptualised in these films suggesting that those which conform most closely to conventional heterosexual pornography in their presentation of fantasy gain greater visibility and international success than those which examine fantasy in other often more complex ways. I argue that while the most successful explicit arthouse films unavowedly rely upon their connections to the sexual ideology of conventional heterosexual pornography, other films which are more open about their links to pornography are built upon more radical ideas about fantasy, sexuality and sexual politics.","PeriodicalId":320521,"journal":{"name":"Open Screens","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125986054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
