The term ‘hybrid learning spaces’ has become commonplace in recent years and has been loosely used to describe a fusion of learning opportunities and teaching approaches that span physical and virtual spaces. Yet, as others have noted, this is not an unproblematic concept as the evolving nature of hybrid learning spaces and now hyflex (hybrid and flexible) learning opportunities force continued redefinition and refinement of existing terminology. The paper identifies new and emerging challenges of space and place in a learning and teaching context and the effect of recognisable architectural motifs - both technological and physical - that provide affordances for certain types of behaviours. Three key areas are designed for across these patterns: social practice, privacy and participation, and their important relationship with effective pedagogy.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116590865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This pattern language is the verbalized and systematized rules of music design hidden in the music of Takashi Watanabe, a famous Japanese film music composer (and one of the authors of this paper). It consists of 27 patterns, each of which describes a design feature or rule that appears repeatedly in his music. This paper covers 7 patterns from this pattern language: Regular Repetition, Small Alteration, Basic Configuration, Discernible Change, Guide to Finish, Enrich Inner Parts, Weight Balance of the Sound. In addition, this paper describes the analysis of two musical pieces using patterns: “Memory Switch” by Takashi Watanabe and “Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone” by Francis Poulenc. As a result, it became clear that the design rules that were found in the music by Mr. Watanabe could also be seen in the music created by other composers. It is expected that the results of this research can be used in the education of music creation and as a reference for beginners in composition.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121777783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In other words, monitoring is essential to ensure the quality of an application. However, monitoring best practices may not be apparent to everyone and, most of the time, are not sufficiently explained or documented to be learned quickly and communicated effectively. Therefore, practices usually lack formalisation and a standard structure that would make all of them easy to communicate and share among practitioners. To tackle this issue, this paper describes three proactive monitoring practices as design patterns: Liveness Endpoint, Readiness Endpoint and Synthetic Testing. Design patterns provide enough structure and detail to be easily reused by practitioners and have space to accommodate different needs and quirks depending on the usage context. The proposed patterns are based on existing literature and tools, stemming from industry best practices that are further detailed and adapted to design patterns. Relations to existing monitoring patterns are also analysed to point the reader to more patterns that complement the ones proposed in this work.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115429665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The initial information was that all classes were to be done online for a short period only, and we believed that we would return to the classroom in two weeks. But within a short period, all face-to-face classes were cancelled and replaced with remote lectures utilizing online Learning Management Systems (LMS) and video conferencing. For many colleges, most classes are still conducted this way in the spring of 2021. The large scale of online education has exposed a number of problems and challenges that although somewhat known have taken on greater significance. This paper describes online teaching models, learning styles, engagement, and interaction models to create a foundation for a set of patterns that capture ways of dealing with these problems – solutions that have been developed and applied for online education even before the pandemic hit but are now being more broadly used. The paper was written over the course of 3 semesters, with examples from teaching at 3 different colleges, depicting the transition from face-to-face teaching coming to an abrupt halt and the rapid transition to pure on-line mode. To support remote activities, the universities contracted some sort of software. St John's University contracted Cisco WebEx, which was available to faculty and students. The City University of New York, (CUNY) system has unique software within each College. At The College of Technology, we used Collaborate Ultra, a tool part of the LMS (Blackboard). Baruch College offered this tool and Zoom was offered with a license from the school. During the second semester, zoom licensing was enhanced and offered throughout the CUNY system. Most of the patterns in this paper depend on an LMS system being in place, as they cover practical topics like course design and how to deal with testing and exams, but also move into areas of student engagement and motivation. Definitions of user experience may be vague and conflicting, as each student and school is unique. The motivation of this paper was the pandemic; however, the findings show engagement as being positive, and yet still exploratory. We engage with technology because it allows us to achieve our purposes. This work contributes to the understanding of how we can apply patterns for online education and shows the start of a whole new pattern language that can benefit educators as well as students as we move forward with a new educational model.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124769282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Creational design patterns deal with the creation and initialization of objects. The Sequential Initializer Pattern provides a way to initialize an object by enforcing a series of function calls which are responsible for the initialization of the semantically different parts of the complex object. This improves readability and writeability and reduces the cognitive load of the programmer. The benefits of this pattern are numerous. It enforces correct usage by the developer, as there is only one way to initialize an object which is additionally enforced by the compiler. It is readable in a way that the intent of each passed parameter for initialization becomes clear. Dependencies and semantic connections between the parameters can be modeled as desired. We show that applying this pattern overcomes many of the hurdles of initialization of complex objects for a programmer.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130294193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many industries have started to implement blockchain solutions for their application and services. Blockchain provides immutability, privacy, security, and transparency. There is no central authority to validate and verify the transactions, still, every transaction in the Blockchain is considered secure and verified. This is made possible by the use of a consensus algorithm which is a core part of any Blockchain network. Different consensus algorithms exist and the selection of appropriate consensus algorithms can affect the performance of the blockchain. This paper presents a pattern for one of the most commonly used blockchain consensus algorithms, which is the Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm. This pattern describes its architecture, including its structure and dynamics.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129370967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reserve sufficient resources on the device for parallel deployment of two versions of the control function to upgrade. The previous version and the next version run in parallel, receive the same environment inputs, and continuously coordinate with the peer (the other version) the right to control the environment by means of a built-in upgrade mechanism. The upgrade mechanism distinguishes normal operation phases from upgrade operation phases, where preparations can be made to release or accept environment control. Both versions of the control function can publish function state and pick up function state published by the peer. Add in-field monitors that continuously check relevant system properties and intervene if necessary.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131371025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Finding and selecting the right pattern is difficult. One way to select a pattern is to follow the sequence and compositions given in a pattern language. However, in general, pattern languages do not always reveal every reliable connection. Patterns are described in informal and unstructured text, making it difficult to understand their connections. This work attempts to provide a conceptual ontology model for organizational patterns – describing the collection of concepts (terms) and their relations. This contribution can be an attempt to express, expose, and share semantic knowledge between patterns using ontology. The resulting ontology can be used on top of the organizational patterns repositories to help retrieve patterns based on their logical connections.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122058270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Handling the vast amount of software and the corresponding hardware are major challenges for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that have to be mastered. This contribution introduces release planning patterns to simplify the planning of software and hardware installed in a vehicle. Therefore, we present eight release planning patterns that were conducted at Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG. The patterns are applied to plan the scope of hardware and software to be developed for certain releases. Numerous influencing factors such as legal requirements, security aspects and the high networking of the software are also considered in the patterns. The patterns address an automotive context and have been developed from a hardware and software point of view based on two projects from the case company. The gathered knowledge can be used for further application in practice and related domains.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116030117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The patterns form a specific structure with particular types of activities for organizing workshops/hands-on learning sessions which are designed to aid teaching of complex topics in a more effective way. We expose how these patterns can achieve that through dividing complexity and deliberately employing proven and effective teaching techniques. We show that this way to structure teaching sessions is applicable to diverse types of subjects and has further benefits like lowering the barrier for people to become instructors and making continuous learning and improvement easy. This paper is for everyone engaged or planning to engage in teaching activities – from school and university teachers, private coaches to individuals engaged in knowledge sharing in various groups – companies or communities. We developed this pattern in a software development company context – however, the idea is applicable to many kinds of learning contexts and needs. We find that this pattern is also a good way to help aspiring teachers structure their first workshops.","PeriodicalId":320481,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130245872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
