The motors used in such appliances and vehicles operate at variable speeds. For reducing energy consumption of electrical appliances, the flux-weakening current that depresses the voltage at high speed leads to significant copper and core losses. Therefore, we have developed a new technique for controlling the magnetic force of a permanent magnet on the basis of the load or speed of the motor. In this paper, we propose a novel motor that can vary the magnetic flux of permanent magnets and clarify the principle and basic characteristics of the motor. Our motor has a permanent magnet magnetized by magnetizing coils of the stator. The results show that the motor can vary magnetic flux linkage from 37% to 100% and produce high torque. In addition, when positive field current flow in the magnetizing coils as a field coil, maximum torque increases by 25 %. Also, the induced voltage can decrease to 0 V by negative field current. The results of our analysis prove that our novel motor can vary the flux of a permanent magnet on the load and can be used in a variable-speed drive with high performance.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"240 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115830954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The diode is realized using four separate epitaxial growth mechanisms: a) direct growth of p-GaN over n-(4H)SiC; b) growth of p-GaN over n-(4H)SiC with AlN as the interface layer; c) growth of p-GaN over n-(4H)SiC with Ga-flux as the interface layer; and d) growth of p-GaN over p-(4H)SiC. The use of less than 2 nm AlN, as the interface material in one of the growth mechanisms is guided from the first principle atomistic simulation study. In all of these four samples, n+-doped (4H)SiC acts as the cathode substrate. For all of the four cases, the metallization for the anode contact is Pd(200 A°)/Au(10000 A°) while Ni(1000 A°) is used for the cathode contact. The measured forward drop of the pn diode with AlN as the interface material is found to be around 5.1 V; whereas, it is between 2 V to 3 V for the rest of the three diode samples. The measured reverse-blocking capability of all the four diode samples is found to be greater than 200 V.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116152025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This solar inverter consists of a boost chopper and a three-phase 2-level inverter, and the capacity covers from 20 kW to 600 kW. This paper first describes the FRT capability. Second, how to control the boost chopper and the inverter is shown. Especially, a new inverter current control to achieve FRT capability and dynamic voltage support (DVS) during a grid fault is proposed. After that, several results using an experimental model (5-kW solar inverter) are shown. Finally, results of a prototype model (20 kW), which has been installed in an actual grid, are presented.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114515081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper shows how to design a modular battery energy storage system (BESS) for medium voltage grids. Typically, this system is scalable in power rated from 5 MW up to 100 MW with a storage capacity of several hours. Using power electronic building blocks (PEBBs) a converter for dc grids and ac grids can be built. In this paper, the chosen topology for the ac solution is the cascaded cell converter. The focus is to determine the optimum number of levels, the modulation technique to avoid microcycles of the batteries and to present the efficiency. A formula to calculate the parasitic capacitance of lead-acid batteries is shown and verified by measurements, which is important for the design of such a converter system. Moreover, a new charging strategy for LiFePO4 — the chosen battery technology for the proposed storage system — is introduced, which prolongs the battery's life, reduces the charging time and decreases the life cycle cost. The proposed charging strategy and battery technology compared to lead-acid batteries is also economically evaluated.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125576612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Up to now, literature is lacking about how to model in detail switched reluctance machines at high speed with axial air-gap flow. The aim of this paper is to present a model showing the effects of varied air-gap flow on temperature distribution in vacuum cleaner machines with a power of 1kW and 60, 000rpm. First, a simulation model was set up, illustrating various operating points of the drive. Then the results of this model were verified on a test bench. Hereby, a simulation was found for high-speed switched reluctance machines that ideally reflects the temperature distribution within the machine and also depicts the effects of changing axial air-gap flow. In conclusion, this presented model indicates that even at high speed and with reduced air-gap flow, these switched reluctance machines can be operated within established temperature limits. Ultimately, this model is very good for predicting the thermal behavior of similar switched reluctance machines with air-gap flow.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"21 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132602828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A vital requirement in high power converters is being fault-tolerant, so that a single fault in a cell does not lead to the trip of the entire converter. This paper presents a strategy for fault-tolerance on cell level with Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristors (IGCT). The concept is based on initiating a surge in a phase leg in a failing cell, limited by a di/dt reactor leading to a short circuit failure mode of the IGCT thereby excluding the cell from the chain.","PeriodicalId":320140,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 14th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124778810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For such island formation is required an active agent capable of governing the micro-grid connection state in a safe mode, especially in connection and disconnection transients. This paper focuses on the design of a method oriented to carry out a stable intentional disconnection, and later re-connection, of local grids from the main distribution grid in an intentional way; also under unbalance load condition. Seamless transfer between grid-connected and isolated mode has been achieved in an alpha-beta stationary reference frame with a frequency based synchronization control loop.
