Proper scheduling of preventive maintenance provides an effective means to tradeoff between the two objectives. In this paper, Pareto-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithms are proposed to optimize the maintenance activities because of their abilities of robust search towards best-compromise solutions for large-size optimization problems. Markov model is proposed to predict the deterioration process, maintenance operations, and availability of individual components. Minimum cut sets method is employed to identify the critical components by evaluating the overall reliability of interconnected systems. Pareto-fronts are generated for comparisons with other substation configurations. Transmission constraints and grid congestion can raise costs by limiting access to lower-cost, more diverse power supplies during both normal conditions and system emergencies. The engineering, design, licensing, and construction of a major high-voltage transmission project require at least 7 years and can extend beyond 10 years. Investigations determining the performance of the bulk power system beyond 5 years are heavily influenced by the addition and location of new generation, dispatch patterns, load growth, and loop flows from other systems. These uncertainties and risks hamper the ability to conduct transmission planning, while forcing electric utilities and regulatory authorities to make unpopular licensing and routing decisions based on imperfect information. Tremendous foresight and regulatory fortitude are required to propose large regional and inter-regional transmission projects that have anything but a clear reliability need. Expansion of the high-voltage transmission system to support adequacy goals can be also influenced by market, and/or economic conditions. To fully use wind power, different wind farms should have appropriate capacity for wind turbine generators (WTG) to get the most wind power and maximum economic benefit. Currently, there are various values for capacity and hub height of commercial WTG. This paper uses three different economical methods to analyze economical outcomes for different wind farms with different parameters for WTG sets prior to the installation of WTG. In the problem the objective function is the total system power loss, while the constraints are the RMS voltage and the total harmonic voltage distortion (THDv) limits at each bus, as well as the limit of the available capacitor units to be placed. In the study the system power loss, the bus RMS voltage, the THDv at each bus, and the capacitor site suitability are modeled as fuzzy membership functions. A useful solution algorithm is then proposed to find the best capacitor locations by testing an actual distribution system. In this paper an innovative software agents-based multilevel security model architecture is presented. The goal of this architecture is to prevent known attacks, and to reduce or eliminate the consequences of successful attacks. An experimental protocol is presented to validate the developed security model architecture. Although PSO-based algorithms are easy to implement and have been empirically shown to perform well on many power system optimization problems, they may get trapped in a local optimum due to premature convergence when solving heavily constrained optimization problems with multiple local optima. This paper proposes an improved hybrid PSO (HPSO), which combines the conventional PSO framework with the crossover operation of genetic algorithm. By applying the crossover operation in PSO, it not only discourages premature convergence to local optimum but also explores and exploits the promising regions in the search space effectively. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, numerical studies have been performed for the large-scale test system of 40 generating units with valve-point effects. The decision making mechanism of the event-based SPS is based on look-up tables. A huge number of contingency analyses are required for constructing and updating the look-up tables. In this paper, automation techniques are developed to increase the analysis efficiency for speeding up preparing a look-up table. Contingency selection algorithms including both the depth-first algorithm and breadth-first algorithm are used to search for contingency cases automatically. A preprocess interface is designed to provide a friendly user-machine interface between the power system raw data and simulation software. And a computer program is developed to integrate the search algorithm and preprocess interface for fulfilling the automation of contingency analysis for SPS. The techniques realized with programs demonstrate a great time-saving advantage compared to traditional man-made work.
