In this work we present and demonstrate a novel WSAN and IoT platform. The new nodes are constructed by stacking together the different hardware modules encapsulating power sources, processing units, wired and wireless transceivers, sensors and actuators, or sets of those. Once a node is built, its processing unit can automatically identify all the connected hardware modules, obtain required software modules and tune node's operation accounting for its structure, available resources and active applications.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123729989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For proper handling it is essential to observe the road congestion patterns. Methods like on-road cameras, etc. require huge investments whereas crowdsourcing methods generate large amount of redundant data. This paper presents a new approach using event sensing to capture relevant crowdsourced data to estimate road traffic congestion and utilizes MapReduce for generating analytics efficiently.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125484378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the high power consumption and circuit-area cost prevents MIMO from being adopted by energy-constrained wireless devices. In this paper, we propose Halma, that can boost link capacity using multiple antennas but a single RF chain, thereby, consuming the same power as SISO. While modulating its normal data symbols, a Halma transmitter hops between multiple passive antennas on a per-symbol basis. The antenna hopping pattern implicitly carriers extra data, which the receiver can decode by extracting the index of the active antenna using its channel pattern as a signature. We design Halma by intercepting the antenna switching and channel estimation modules in modern wireless systems, including ZigBee and WiFi. Further, we design a model-driven antenna hopping protocol to balance a tradeoff between link quality and dissimilarity of channel signatures. Remarkably, by leveraging the inherent packet structure in ZigBee, Halma's link capacity can scale well with the number of antennas. Using the WARP software radio, we have implemented Halma along with a ZigBee- and WiFi-based PHY layer. Our experiments demonstrate that Halma can improve ZigBee's throughput and energy efficiency by multiple folds under realistic network settings. For WiFi, it consumes similar power as SISO, but boosts throughput across a wide range of link conditions and modulation levels.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127307020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social sensing has emerged as a new paradigm of data collection, where a group of individuals collect and share observations or measurements about the physical world at scale. A key challenge in social sensing applications lies in ascertaining the correctness of reported observations from unvetted data sources with unknown reliability. We refer to this problem as truth discovery. In this paper, we develop a new link weight based truth discovery scheme that solves the truth discovery problem by explicitly considering different degrees of confidence that sources may express on the reported data. The preliminary results show that our new scheme significantly outperforms the-state-of-the-art baselines and improves the accuracy of the truth estimation results in social sensing applications.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127969519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, traditional closed-circuit television cameras can only capture static scenes. When unexpected events happen, such as fire accidents or stranger intrusion, the recorded video data cannot provide immediate and precise information. In this work, we design a camera dispatch system for video surveillance with pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, which can monitor event-areas/targets real-timely and flexibly. Users can dynamically define the monitoring requirements, such as pixel-per-foot and viewing-angle of the event-areas/targets. Then, a dispatch algorithm will decide the most necessary cameras and corresponding settings to monitor the event-areas/targets immediately. The control panel is implemented as a web-based service. The demo shows that users can easily monitor potential event-areas/targets anywhere, anytime through a web browser.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132703174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indoor localization is important for various smart building applications, including resources arrangement optimization, patient/customer tracking, etc. Geophones are used to measure the ground vibrations and time difference of arrival (TDoA) for different sensors are used to solve the multilateration localization problem. The advantages of this system include its sparsity and also its stability over time. Lesser dependency on instrument people is another upside of this system. The results of pilot tests show that this system can be successfully used for indoor localization.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125625036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach is two-pronged: we consider relation-structured Phenomenal Maps alongside spatially-organized Physical Maps. Phenomenal Maps may be used to answer semantic queries about the relative position of objects without necessarily resorting to physical coordinates. Physical Maps are not restricted to purely Euclidian spaces, to the contrary we identify useful applications for topological, and metrical maps among others. We give the framework for a structured mechanism through which localization information in all these representations may be reconciled.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123496999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet despite their advantages, graph filters are limited. The limitation is exposed in a filtering task that is common, but not fully solved in sensor networks: the identification of a signal's peaks and pits. Choosing the correct filter necessitates a-priori information about the signal and the network topology. Furthermore, in sparse and irregular networks graph filters introduce distortion, effectively rendering identification inaccurate, even when signal-specific information is available. Motivated by the need for a multi-scale approach, this paper extends classical results on scale-space analysis to graphs. We derive the family of scale-space kernels (or filters) that are suitable for graphs and show how these can be used to observe a signal at all possible scales: from fine to coarse. The gathered information is then used to distributedly identify the signal's peaks and pits. Our graph scale-space approach diminishes the need for a-priori knowledge, and reduces the effects caused by noise, sparse and irregular topologies, exhibiting: (i) superior resilience to noise than the state-of-the-art, and (ii) at least 20% higher precision than the best graph filter, when evaluated on our testbed.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124111875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These methods have, however, not enjoyed the same popularity in the field of indoor localization. In this work we highlight some of the issues that arise when using vision-based methods for indoor localization. We then propose means of addressing these issues and implement a proof-of-concept visual inertial odometry system for a mobile device. Preliminary experiments have been carried out in a small library where sub-meter positioning accuracy was attained. Based on our proof-of-concept, we believe that visual inertial odometry techniques can provide the levels of positioning accuracy needed for widespread adoption.","PeriodicalId":318992,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133088075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
