The main purpose of the model is to help manage the web services capacity that providers assign their customers accordingly so as to ensure the fulfillment of the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) established.Therefore, the model allows for the analysis of the effects of different web services capacity management polices on the service performance and on the penalties to be assumed by providers for non-compliance with the response times agreed with their customers. The main aims of the sensitivity analysis carried out in the case study of this research paper are as follows: (1) to assess the fulfillment of the SLAs according to the web service capacity contracted by the customer, (2) to determine the lowest web service capacity and those capacity management parameters that ensure that the actual service performance is the one that has been agreed on (3) to evaluate the penalties that the web service provider should assume for non-compliance with response times.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126401097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed solution is unique in that it ensures the robustness of data flow when automatically composing web services through the use of agent-based negotiation between web service providers. Starting from the semantic specification of a non-robust composition, we adapt the mechanism of Concept Abduction to compute the set of additional semantic descriptions necessary to ensure robustness of the semantic connections within the composed service. An agent-based negotiation is then used to solicit the additional semantic definitions which are required for achieving robust web service compositions.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114752857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its intended field of application is broad, ranging from fat-client applications and web applications to enterprise application integration solutions. Unlike other approaches Windows Workflow supports two distinct approaches to workflow specification – sequential workflows and state machine workflows - which deal with fundamentally different types of business scenarios. To date there has been minimal investigation into its capabilities and limitations, especially with respect to the two different control-flow styles it offers. To remedy this, in this paper we present a rigorous analysis of Windows Workflow's ability to deal with common control-flow scenarios. As a framework for this evaluation we use the Workflow Patterns. Our analysis outlines the strength and shortcomings of Windows Workflow's control-flow expressiveness and compares it to BPEL and jBPM - two other popular approaches for the design and implementation of business processes in a service-oriented context.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133974282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mutation testing is a white-box testing technique that has been applied successfully to programs written in several languages. In order to apply it we need a system for mutant generation. This paper presents the first results of applying a new system, GAmera, for automatic mutant generation for WS-BPEL compositions. It is composed by three different elements: an analyzer, a mutant generator and a system that executes and evaluates the mutants. GAmera is based in genetic algorithms and attempts to minimize the number of generated mutants, independently of the number and type of mutation operators, without losing relevant information. It can also detect potentially equivalent mutants allowing to improve the quality of the test suite.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116733293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as the amount of available services increases, it becomes difficult to manage, discover, select and compose them, so that automation is required in these processes. This can be achieved by using semantic information represented in ontologies. Currently there are many different approaches that support semantics-based service composition. However, still little effort has been spent on creating a common methodology to evaluate and compare such approaches. In this paper we present our initial ideas to create an evaluation framework for semantics-based service composition approaches. We use a collection of existing services, and define a set of evaluation metrics, confusion matrix-based and time-based. Furthermore, we present how composition evaluation scenarios are generated from the collection of services and specify the strategy to be used in the evaluation process. We demonstrate the proposed framework through an example. Currently there are mechanisms and initiatives to address the evaluation of the semantics-based service discovery and matchmaking approaches. However, still few efforts have been spent on the creation of comprehensive evaluation mechanisms for semantics-based service composition approaches.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"1518 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128049681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we argue that document-oriented interfaces can be viewed as batches of calls to finer-grained object-oriented interfaces. Turning this correspondence around, we show that flexible documents can be specified by converting a block of fine-grained object-oriented invocations into a batch document. The statements in the block operate directly on virtual service objects and are composed using sequences, conditionals, and loops. Our system, Remote Batch Invocation for Web Services, translates object-oriented interfaces into a WSDL describing batches of calls and vice versa. A wrapper class on the server interprets documents described by the WSDL and dispatches method calls to the appropriate server objects. Clients can use the the service described by the WSDL in three ways: using existing WSDL client generation tools, using a wrapper library, or using a language extension to Java. The result is a powerful infrastructure for web services that is compatible with existing tools and standards while providing an elegant programming model. We have used our infrastructure to create a Web server wrapper for the Amazon Associates Web Service, which shows that remote batches can support a clean object-oriented programming model over a stateless web service.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126112597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Platform independency is obtained and the possibility of integrating different information sources over the Web is augmented. Service providers can act as peers on the P2P network being able to supply services and to reply to incoming service requests. Highly dynamicity and absence of a common resource conceptualization characterize the environment. As a consequence, a semantic infrastructure to organize on-the-fly distributed services and to support their automatic location is recommended. In this paper we present basic concepts and experimental evaluation of a reference architecture, SERVANT, apt to support service-based semantic search, by means of a distributed service registry.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134272023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Novel services for science are a hot topic these days. From social bookmarking sites to online ranking of scientists, these services try to assist scientists in sharing content and assessing people and their scientific contributions. These services are however still very much anchored to a traditional notion of publication and are only scratching the surface of what can be done to help scientists collaborate for the greater good. Examples of Scientific Services. An example of services that Liquidpub intends to deliver is that of Liquid Journals (LJ), that redefines the traditional notion of journal which was born at a time where the paper was the only possible form of non-verbal knowledge dissemination, printing was the scarce resource, and therefore peer review and pre-publication filtering was necessary. Liquid journals are based on these notions i) separation of publication from inclusion in a journal: contributions are posted online (without any review) or published in traditional journals following a traditional process, and then they can be included in an arbitrarily high number of LJs. Each LJ decides policies and rules to determine if a contribution is included. Essentially, LJs are ways to aggregate all sort of available content based on what is interesting and relevant for its readers. This can be done via review, collaborative filtering, looking at journals of people we consider highly, etc; ii) Everybody (even individuals) can create and run LJs; iii) Papers are not the only source of knowledge. Blogs, experiments, datasets, slides, comments/feedback and the like are valid and useful forms of dissemination, some of them having the additional benefits of allowing early dissemination and therefore better collaboration. Including feedback as a form of contribution has the effect that it is considered as part of what is evaluated from a scientist and therefore it encourages giving feedback, which is fundamental to the scientific creation process. All is driven towards what the purpose of a journal should be: providing people with interesting content to read, minimizing the dissemination overhead, and maximizing the collaboration. Using standard languages, Semantic Web Services can provide the description of their input parameters and preconditions for execution, as well as the output and effects of their execution. The availability of such descriptions demand the investigation of systematic approaches for the composition of Web Services based on their description. Users shall thus be enabled to combine data and services according to their needs.However, existing mashup frameworks require some programming knowledge, hence are not suitable for non-expert users. In this paper, we present a system that builds on existing Semantic Web research to achieve an automatic,ad-hoc generation of mashups thus eliminating the need for programmer involvement. At the core of our approach, there is an evolutionary algorithm that automatically composes different information web services based on semantic service descriptions. The information that has been retrieved from the invoked web services is automatically transformed into a semantic representation and presented as a mashup to the users of the system.","PeriodicalId":318941,"journal":{"name":"2009 Seventh IEEE European Conference on Web Services","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123408324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
