We start with the quality of service (QoS) driven routing protocol called \"cognitive packet network\" (CPN) which uses smart packets (SPs) to dynamically select routes in a distributed autonomic manner based on the user's QoS requirements. We extend it by introducing GA at the source routers, which modifies and filters the paths discovered by CPN. The GA can combine paths that were previously discovered to create new untested but valid source-to-destination paths, which are then selected on the basis of their \"fitness\". We implement this approach and the measurements which we have conducted on a network test-bed indicate that when the network's background traffic load is light to medium, the GA can result in improved QoS. When the background traffic load is high, it appears that the use of the GA may be detrimental to the QoS experienced by users as compared to CPN routing, because of the fact that the GA uses less timely state information in its decision making","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129710519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are mostly centered on applications linked to everyday situations concerning individuals: at home, in the street, in the car, in public places and relating to leisure. The AMILAB research group at TEKNIKER is analyzing the technological, human and social needs and implications for AmI in the manufacturing field. For this aim we have set up a laboratory to spread the model of AmI to the area of manufacturing. Requirements include multiple language implementations so that this agent host environment can exist in both real-time controllers and Java-based devices, and the ability to operate with external agent systems. Our first infrastructure, the autonomous cooperative system (ACS), accomplished these goals, but presented other issues. Although ACS has been successfully deployed on commercial controllers, new releases of controllers will cause complications in the evolution of the software and adoption of future functionality. We need to establish a formal integration procedure of the agent functionality with the controllers and to transform the underlying system into a fully integrated and open heterogeneous system. This challenge implies changes to the controllers for the creation of the agents and changes that would radically affect the agent core. In this document, we discuss the requirements and results of that transformation","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126704476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In those systems, interactions must be carefully designed and must be smartly managed at run-time. A good paradigm to deal with interaction and run-time situations is represented by the concept of role, which has been exploited in different approaches. In this paper we investigate the adoption of overhearing, a paradigm to deal with cooperating agents, in order to improve the adoption of roles. The approach presented here can be adopted to support the agent decisions regarding the role to assume and its use","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128004593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, current industrial automation systems are not always well matched to this environment: these systems are typically implemented using large, and often expensive, computer hardware platforms that support monolithic computer control applications. As a result, when the control system is installed, it can take months before the system operational, and changes are inevitably complex and difficult to implement. Both of these factors contribute significantly to the total cost of the industrial control project.","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133347100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(2003). Real laboratories allow students to acquire methods, skills and experience related to real equipment, in a manner that is very close to the way they are being used in industry. The purpose of the project is the study, development and implementation of an e-learning environment to allow undergraduate students to practice subjects related to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The system, which is now at a preliminary stage, will allow the remote experimentation with real robotic devices (i.e. robots, cameras, etc.). It will enable the student to learn in a collaborative manner (remote participation with other students) where it will be possible to combine the on-site activities (performed \"in-situ\" within the real lab during the normal practical sessions), with the \"online\" one (performed remotely from home via the Internet). Moreover, the remote experiments within the e-laboratory to control the real robots can be performed by both, students and even scientist. This project is under development and it is carried out jointly by two Universities (UPC and UJI). Among other factors, to get a good task allocation, we have to take into account the physical interference effects between robots, that is, when two or more robots want to access to the same point at the same time. This paper analyzes interference impact using auction methods, one of the most popular task allocation systems. We show how the performance of the auction utility function can be improved if interference impact is included in it. We also provide a framework to simplify one of the main problems of all auction systems which is finding a good utility function. Our method has been tested using transport like tasks, where each object must be transported to a delivery point before a deadline. This is a simple task that is very useful to isolate the interference effects","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130964239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Voos","doi":"10.1109/DIS.2006.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DIS.2006.9","url":null,"abstract":"Distributed resource allocation is a promising field for the application of multi-agent systems also in technical or industrial environments. The design of the multi-agent system then mainly comprises the definition of the agents' local knowledge and behavior as well as the definition of an interaction protocol for overall coordination. Most solutions of agent-based resource allocation however exist in static or discrete-event systems while the allocation of resources to continuous dynamic systems is hardly addressed. In order to derive the local and the interaction behavior of the agents, we refer to a mathematical formulation of the resource allocation problem as an optimization problem. Based on a market-like coordination scheme, a new agent-based solution for the allocation of resources to dynamic systems is developed and applied to an example","PeriodicalId":318812,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Workshop on Distributed Intelligent Systems: Collective Intelligence and Its Applications (DIS'06)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117199782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our architecture we use modular approach to the reflection as we found it to be a promising way how to throw multi-agent systems together with the computing with limited resources, the programme code reusability and the automated code generation. The architecture is lightweight and it enables the agent to alter its own code in runtime using reflection according to the changes in the environment.
