Beirut’s rule began in February 1947, when he was elected head of state, and ended of his death in March 1956. Between 1947–1952 he was the president of Poland, and from 1948 till 1952 – General secretary of the State Council. This was the period of Stalinism in Poland. During those years, a number of political and economic reforms were carried out in the country: the establishment of Soviet-type socialism, the voting in of new constitution, imposition of the one-party system, nationalization, industrialization and collectivization of agriculture. During this period, the Polish United Worker’s Party carried out large-scale agitation and propaganda activities, characterized by printing and distribution of numerous propaganda materials.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"17 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139191501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two of the artifacts have been recently obtained as stray finds, probably coming from disturbed graves in the area of Palamartsa Village, Popovo Region, in Northeast Bulgaria (Обр. 1.1 and 2.1; Карта 1.1). The third blade is kept at the National Museum of History in Sofia and allegedly originates from the region of Montana, Northwest Bulgaria (Обр. 2.10; Карта 1.2). Together with another twenty-five known items these weapons form the group of the earliest iron swords in ancient Thrace (Обр. 1 and 2; Карта 1). They are dated to the first phase of the Early Iron Age (1000–750 BC) and in tandem with the spears appeared to be the principal weapon, at least according to the grave goods (cf. Карта 3). The cut-and-thrust swords have clear prototypes in the local bronze tradition (Naue II type; cf. Карта 2) and they are one of the indicators of the early adoption of iron metallurgy in Thrace south of Lower Danube. The article systematizes the available information about the swords in terms of their origin, typology and chronology. On that basis the text attempts to reveal possible aspects of the fighting skills and warfare of the local ethne.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139194925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are anthropomorphic faces made of bone with an elongated irregular rectangular shape (in some places with rounded areas), pointed at one end. The aim of this publication is to present more information on the chronology, interpretation and cultural affiliation of these interesting artefacts. The artefacts were received by NAIM–BAS in the 1980s, with no information available on the circumstances of their acquisition and no receipt from the previous owner. There is no information whatsoever about their original archaeological environment, and whether or not they were acquired as a result of regular archaeological research, or whether they were the subject of unauthorised archaeological activity, such as the illegal trafficking of movable cultural property etc. Based on a brief overview, it can be said that the finds from NAIM–BAS can be attributed to the period of Islamic art generated during the Arab expansion in the lands of the Near East between the 7th–10th/12th centuries. Their interpretation as parts of several rag or dressed dolls is based on the definitions of similar finds from the territories of present-day Israel, Egypt and Palestine. This conclusion is based on the archaeological context in which these objects were found, as well as the hypotheses circulating in scholarly circles regarding their use and place in the daily life of people during this period. Taking into account the geographical area of their distribution, the archaeological context and the anthropomorphic specifics, it can be assumed that the finds from the NAIM–BAS collection are probably of similar origin, interpretation and chronology, although their natural area of manifestation is far removed from the borders of the Bulgarian lands and the European Southeast.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The Saint Hedwig Beaker from Medieval Novogrudok","authors":"K.A. Lavysh","doi":"10.46687/dysu2932","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46687/dysu2932","url":null,"abstract":"One of the most impressive finds in Novogrudok, Belarus, is the Saint Hedwig beaker, found in 1960 in building № 10 on the Small Castle, which is reliably (stratigraphically and by finds) dated to the second half of the 12th century. This is a beaker made of thick glass; wheel-engraving and cutting techniques were used in its ornamentation. On the walls of the beaker are images of a lion, a griffin, a stylized tree of life and two half-palmettes are carved. St. Hedwig beakers were very expensive objects that were made to order and used for diplomatic gifts, at coronations, and served as tabernacles or reliquaries. At the moment, 25 such beakers are known, 14 complete and 11 in fragments. Most of them come from the territory that was part of the Holy Roman Empire, and from Poland. Outside these territories, only 2 finds were found, one of which is from Novogrudok. According to the new hypothesis of T.S. Bubenko and A.A. Metelskii, the area on the Small Castle where this St. Hedwig beaker was discovered, was not a rich quarter of a town – as F.D. Gurevich believed – but a citadel where the prince lived. This hypothesis allows us to reinterpret the unique collection of Byzantine and Oriental glass, which includes the St. Hedwig beaker, and other imported items, not as the property of wealthy goldsmiths (according to F.D. Gurevich), but as princely treasures. Thus, the St. Hedwig beaker from Novogrudok fits into a number of beakers discovered during excavations of European palaces, castles and citadels, and once again confirms their interpretation as unique precious vessels that only rulers and aristocratic families possessed.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"36 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139192093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They usually consist of a sword, knife, an applique (shield boss) from a shield of iron, and clay vessels. They were used by the local Thracian population, which inhabited the territory of present-day Northwestern Bulgaria during the 2nd–1st C. BC. The sets are dated on the basis of the shape of the swords, which is characteristic for La Tene armament during LT C2: 200/180–150/120 BC and during LT D: 150/120 BC–16 AD – the creation of the Roman province Moesia. The sets are inventory from graves which show the greatest concentration of their type between the rivers Ogosta and Iskar. In the present publication the burial structures from which they originate are examined, and the burial rite which was used in their deposition. In it the information is analysed from the conducted archaeological research and the extant evidence regarding finds which have been discovered in various circumstances such as building activity, agricultural work and treasure hunter’s activities. The research model used allows the formulation of an important conclusion – two models for interment are presented: 1) cremation on a pyre and the subsequent construction of a mound above it; 2) cremation at an undisclosed location and deposition of the burned remains and armament in a pit, above which no earthen structure or mound was piled up.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139193279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bekov","doi":"10.46687/zupj3827","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46687/zupj3827","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract: The subject of the present article is a newly discovered dedicatory inscription of Isis, Sarapis and Anubis (Обр. 1), made by the society of their venerable believers. Some of these admirers are also connected with the coinage – the coin magistrate ΚΥΡΣΑ was the father of one of the initiates – ΗΡΩΝΥΜΟ. Thanks to the parallel between the epigraphic data and the coins, the newly discovered inscription can be dated to the second half of the 2nd c. BC. From the research it can be concluded that somewhere in the outlines of Odessos during the Hellenistic era, maybe in the sacred territory around the today’s oldest active Christian temple in Varna – “The Assumption of the Holy Virgin” Church, or around the place of the newly discovered inscriptions (18 Tsar Ivan Shishman Str.), existed a temple of Isis, Sarapis and Anubis (№ 4 on Карта 1). Moreover, it is very likely that the upright statue of the Great God of Odessos was erected there in the 3rd–2nd centuries BC, and from its creation to be associated with Pluto/Sarapis, because the statue first appears on the Odessos tetradrachms of their own type (Cat. № 6–7, c. 168–167 BC). The new epigraphic and numismatic data confirm the opinion that the Thracians occupied very important positions in Odessos and perhaps had a leading role from the middle of the 2nd century BC until the capture of the city by Rome.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126529302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It presents the most important information about the life of Karol Wojtyla before his election as pope in 1978 – birth, childhood, education and his life path as a Catholic priest. The most important issues touched upon in the article are the proclamation of the Thessalonica Brothers as patrons of Europe in 1980, the encyclical dedicated to them issued five years later, the annual meetings of the Pope John Paul II with the Bulgarian delegations on the occasion of 24th May – the day of the sainted brothers Cyril and Methodius and the day of the Bulgarian alphabet, enlightenment and education, and Slavic writing. An important point representing the attitude of the Holy Father towards Bulgaria is the visit to our country organized between May 23rd and 26th, 2002. Thus, the Pope showed his respect for the work of Cyril and Methodius precisely on the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture. It marks the dialogue that John Paul led and the Eastern Orthodox Church during his 27-year pontificate.","PeriodicalId":318652,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Historical and Archaeological Research","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132878479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
