This requires an integrated approach addressing energy consumption, use of raw materials, treatment and valorization of resources, new business models and synergies among industrial stakeholders. Managing and adding value to organic residues is a challenge and an opportunity for industries that produce these by-products. If anaerobic digestion is fundamental in this valuation, the quality and quantity of the obtained biogas, as well as the required energy intensity, dictate the participation of these stakeholders in the circular economy. A systemic approach is proposed in this work, fostering the vision of a circular economy in industries that generate organic residues, by considering the potential of renewable energy (photovoltaics) for self-consumption of locally generated electrical energy, and anaerobic co-digestion for improving the efficiency of biofuel production. A wastewater treatment plant is analysed, and the benefits of this integrated approach are highlighted.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115452837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy production by self-consumption and lower costs photovoltaic (PV) panels has created a market for an increase in distributed PV generation. A self-consumption unit may waste almost all-day production if it doesn't match consumption and if there are no batteries in the system. In this case, most part of the energy generated is sold to the public grid. To avoid this situation, these panels should be installed, not in habitation houses, but in people's workplace, that is, public buildings, where photovoltaic production coincides with the load diagram peak of the building, reducing the amount of energy sold to the public grid. In addition, electricity generation decentralization avoids energy losses during transportation and distribution and reduces the number of large electrical plants, significantly contributing to the success of Paris Conference targets that are intended to slow down climate change. In summary, the main objective of this work is to study and evaluate the economic and energy impacts of photovoltaic panels installed in public buildings. Specifically, profitability study of a facility, which is very positive with an IRR of 14, % and an 8-year pay-back.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123633134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The solution is intended to help maintenance workers when they need to track and fix part of the infrastructure by revealing hidden infrastructure, displaying additional information and guiding workers in complex tasks. The application has the potential to improve maintenance worker's tasks as it can help them perform faster and with more accuracy. The work explores the creation of the application and discusses the methodologies used to build an optimal and user-friendly tool. The methodology is based on design science research: an improvement need, and not necessarily a problem, was identified, and from there a solution was conceived. MR has proven to be a major tool for helping in several areas, and this paper can give insights for many future solutions with mixed reality or HoloLens and help them build new and better applications to improve tasks at a job or at home.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127524205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality monitored system is based on the robot-computer vision architecture and includes: (i) real-time high-speed processing of product images, and (ii) a global autonomous behaviour, context and task dependent self-learning that is adaptive to the work environment. We have investigated the use of integral Robot Vision (iRVision) technology. iRVision is a ready-to-use robotic vision package available for FANUC robots. The experimental evaluation shows that the inspection system that we developed can correctly identify if a product is defective or not. The proposed architecture will finally have a positive economic impact for the company by optimizing the production flow and reducing the production costs.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115671218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The power electronic conversion system for this PV application includes a quadratic boost converter to step-up the voltage and to guarantee Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), optimizing the energy production. The DC/AC conversion is performed by a full-bridge single phase inverter using Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM). A current controller and a voltage controller are designed to guarantee the desired voltage level in the DC link and current waveform in the connection to the grid. Simulation results are obtained and analyzed for different irradiance conditions, and show the proper response of the MPPT system and the output power injected to the grid.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123701252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Integration of renewable sources, larger energy demands and changes in consumers' needs (electric vehicles charging, self-generation, etc.) cannot be satisfied with transmission schemes already deployed. For this purpose, the concept of smart grid was introduced. Smart grids aim for more distributed, flexible and controlled energy transmission from generation to consumers. Within the smart grid paradigm, the concept of microgrid was developed, as a local grid that can work together or separately from a larger grid. In this paper, different models for a microgrid are presented, according to the time-span required for simulation. This microgird is composed of several generation sources, both renewable (solar, wind), conventional (diesel generators), and storage (lithium-ion batteries). Simulation results are provided for each subsystem to evaluate transient and steady-state performance of developed control strategies. The models presented in this paper are the base for further high-level control strategies implementations.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129223461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kabir, Sven Hartmann","doi":"10.1109/YEF-ECE.2018.8368933","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/YEF-ECE.2018.8368933","url":null,"abstract":"The importance of accurate intrusion detection is growing tremendously as the malicious network traffic activities have also grown significantly. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) provide automatic detection for security violation like denial of service (DoS), virus, port scans, buffer overflows, CGI attacks, clogging or flooding etc. For network and host based systems, the most widely used and effective approach is data analysis with signature-based detection methods. Thus, the success of the detection system depends on the real appearance of the security violation, detection of the violation and response time. We are working on highly efficient real time network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) which will solve the detection efficiency problem such as real time detection rate, false positive etc in distributed environments. In this work, we propose a concept IDS to investigate the experimental performance of Snort based NIDS. We have used an open source network intrusion detection and prevention system Snort to implement our two different indexing methods. We used Snort version 2.9.7.5 which has almost 26k Snort rules and very efficient for online network auditing. We implemented prefix and random indexing method to all Snort rules to create primary patterns that reduce packet inspection time. Since all highly sensitive positive alerts need instant action from network administrator, our concept IDS also reduces the false positive (wrong alert) rate even at high network traffic. By combining the concept IDS and a data mining technique indexing will improve the accuracy of the intrusion detection in real time. We also present our experimental data and results of our IDS prototype.","PeriodicalId":315757,"journal":{"name":"2018 International Young Engineers Forum (YEF-ECE)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115196355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
