The resistance bank used in extracting the third harmonic component in the conventional technique results in high loss and requires rigorous filtering. Creating a virtual neutral using a zigzag transformer is proposed in the present paper. The use of grounding transformer results in a significant improvement in the efficiency of the drive and also a reduction in the noise level while inferring the rotor position of the drive.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"145 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115547987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus is on estimating the oscillating power components in addition to the steady state power required from the generator without the need for sequence decomposition. The reference current signals are appropriately modified to minimize the power and torque oscillations. Real and reactive power control is implemented using stator flux oriented vector control. Unlike the previously reported techniques, the proposed schemes enable reduction of oscillations in torque, active and reactive power, and the dc link voltage all in a single target. Numerical simulations are carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC for the laboratory 3-hp DFIG test set up. The results establish that the performance of DFIG can be notably enhanced with the proposed schemes.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114161696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Economic dispatch problem is formulated by a smooth differentiable or piecewise quadratic objective function, which is the same approach used by classical optimization methods. Even though, due to the valve-point effects, the real input output characteristics becomes a higher order nonlinear and discontinuous one which results in a non-convex, non-smooth fuel cost function. Even the most popular PSO technique also presents decade to have a more optimized value in certain applications. Power system is one such application where the naturally inspired algorithms are giving better results than the conventional methods like lambda iteration method , gradient method etc. In this paper, particle swarm optimization which solves economic and practical economic load dispatch problem (with valve point effect) with better optimized results in a little fraction of seconds is explained. In this case, 3 generator system, 13 generator system and 20 generator systems are considered and the optimal values of power of each generator which gives optimal cost was found by this time effective particle swarm intelligence is proposed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121086988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These low-power loads include conventional single-phase power supplies, switch mode power supplies, fluorescent lamps, heating elements and; pumps and motors for ventilation, air-conditioning and elevators. The two-pulse rectifier is the most popular single-phase topology deployed for ac-dc conversion; however, when feeding an inductive load, its line current has a total harmonic distortion (THD) of around 28%, that is a violation of power quality standards. Another concern is the presence of third and other triplen harmonics in the line currents that add up in the neutral conductor. This paper reports THD reduction in the line currents and neutral current decrease, by mitigation of triplen and non-triplen harmonics, using a Zig-Zag transformer between the three-phase utility and the return conductor of the rectifiers with balanced load. The currents are also investigated for harmonic content with the rectifiers feeding unbalanced load. Harmonic estimates are obtained using MATLAB simulation of the rectifiers with and without the Zig-Zag transformer. Experimental results with the utility feeding the rectifiers directly without the Zig-Zag transformer are also presented.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127201281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowledge of device switching characteristics is required for reliable design and operation of the converters. Switching characteristics are studied widely at high current levels, and corresponding data are available in datasheets. But the devices in a converter also switch low currents close to the zero crossings of the line currents. Further, the switching behaviour under these conditions could significantly influence the output waveform quality including zero crossover distortion. Hence, the switching characteristics of high-current IGBTs (300-A and 75-A IGBT modules) at low load current magnitudes are investigated experimentally in this paper. The collector current, gate-emitter voltage and collector-emitter voltage are measured at various low values of current (less than 10% of the device rated current). A specially designed in-house constructed coaxial current transformer (CCT) is used for device current measurement without increasing the loop inductance in the power circuit. Experimental results show that the device voltage rise time increases significantly during turn-off transitions at low currents.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129052374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent investigation and innovations in the pulse width modulation (PWM) methods are not encompassed in BLDC drives. The conventional PWM results mechanical vibration and acoustic noise, and limit the application scope the BLDC drives. This is due to the incapability of deterministic PWM in spreading the harmonic power. This paper presents random pulse width modulation (RPWM) for BLDC motor drive with better harmonic power distribution. The randomness is introduced in carrier wave by toggling between triangular wave (+fc) and its inverted form (-fc). The performance of the proposed RPWM is validated by using MATLAB software and results such as harmonic spread factor (HSF), total harmonic distortion (THD), and acoustic noise spectrum are presented. The comparison of results with the conventional PWM demonstrates the superiority of the proposed PWM.","PeriodicalId":315326,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Electrical Energy Systems (ICEES)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124410524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this design, the desired output voltage is achieved by comparing the desired reference waveform (modulating signal) with a high-frequency triangular `carrier waveform'. By this scheme, the voltage source inverter can be controlled by the sine pulse width modulation technique (SPWM) with the DC voltage amplitude and finally the total harmonic distortion (THD) can be reduced to the limit of IEEE harmonic standard.
