More recently, the proliferation of smartphone usage has augmented sensing architectures with readily available resources to enable data collection in real-time; aiding the adoption of participatory sensing network (PSN) paradigms. Unfortunately both literature domains remain disparate, and their operational mandates dictate significant variance despite their apparent common goals. In this paper we present a formal paradigm for resource representation across ubiquitous platforms, and present dynamic heuristics for utilizing WSNs and participatory-based transient resources towards serving multiple applications in concurrency. The presented paradigm, namely Dynamic Resource Reuse (DRR) WSN, supports multiple owners of resources and incentivizes their collaboration via token-reward systems. We capitalize on dynamic incentive mechanisms to solicit the contribution of resources from WSNs and PSNs. The core contribution of this work lies in operational synergy, facilitating cross-network functional utilization of all readily available resources, despite their network ownership.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132102978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is able to resolve the disadvantage in an extreme case in which an eavesdropper, located near to source, can spy the any jamming-seed if it is shared. The jamming signal is proposed to carry an amount of binary message. When it is securely decoded, the source is able to create a network-coding signal from the binary jamming message and its desire messages, allowing for an avoidance of the wiretapping of the nearby eavesdropper.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"28 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116828319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result much effort is being put towards protecting these vital infrastructures without which modern society suffers dire consequences. These infrastructures, due to their intricate nature, behave in complex ways. Improving their resilience and understanding their behavior requires a collaborative effort between the private sector that operates these infrastructures and the government sector that regulates them. This collaboration in the form of information sharing requires a new type of information network whose goal is in two parts to enable infrastructure operators share status information among interdependent infrastructure nodes and also allow for the sharing of vital information concerning threats and other contingencies in the form of alerts. A communication model that meets these requirements while maintaining flexibility and scalability is presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129378852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new formulation for communication-efficient decentralized change detection is proposed where local sensors are memoryless, receive independent observations, and no feedback from the fusion center. Average detection delay and false alarm probability have been previously used for system design and performance assessment. In this paper, we introduce an additional constraint: the average number of communications between local sensors and the fusion center. This metric is able to reflect both the cost of establishing communication links as well as overall energy consumption over time. The proposed algorithm minimizes detection delay with constraints on both false alarm probability and average number of communications. The optimal choice of thresholds in the algorithm are determined by a combination of sequential detection analysis and constrained optimization. Performance is investigated for different scenarios through both analysis and simulation, where the effects of approximations used are evaluated.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"9 38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121955293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sensing in such environments expose sensing nodes to several performance degradation factors which obstruct sensing and/or data reporting. Sprouts WSN platform, developed by TRL, overcomes the challenging factors of harsh environments. In this paper we introduce the patch antenna design of Sprouts platform. Sprouts antenna is designed, simulated, and tested to fulfill extended communication range while adhering to fit within “coin sized” dimensions. In addition, the antenna is adaptable to resonant frequency shifts which result from protective encapsulation material.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123224754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a systematic network coding scheme for packet-level transmissions over two-hop lossy links. In the scheme, a source node sends out uncoded packets in their original order first, followed by a potentially unlimited number of coded packets using random linear network coding. The intermediate node forwards a packet if it receives an uncoded packet, and sends a coded packet from previously buffered packets using random linear network coding if it does not receive a packet or the received packet is coded. We show that, compared to the scheme in which random linear network coding is used all the time at the source and intermediate nodes, the proposed method requires much less computation in encoding and decoding and also achieves a higher end-to-end rate. The benefit is appreciable when the number of source packets is not large and the finite field in which network coding is performed is small. To analytically assess the performance, we employ a Markov chain based technique to calculate the expected completion time of the proposed scheme given the number of source packets, link erasure rates and finite field size.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115319222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In literature outage probability has been evaluated for the whole cell. In this paper, we develop a method to study a specified sector of the cell instead of the whole cell. We evaluate analytically exact solution of outage probability of a sector of circular cell based on path loss threshold for uniformly distributed users. These outage probabilities are evaluated numerically and compared for various criteria. Finally, simulation is performed based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) parameters in order to validate the analytical solution.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126711699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For each restoration strategy, the problem is formulated as non-convex, non-linear multicommodity flow problem, where the objective function is given by the capacity installation cost and the routing cost. These problems are presented as special cases of the capacity and flow assignment (CFA) problem, and are solved by means of a special augmented Lagrangian approach (socalled the Separable Augmented Lagrangian Algorithm (SALA)). Numerical results are provided, comparing both restoration strategies in terms of network costs.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129298635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ATC can be implemented in different layers of the protocol stack, such as at the physical layer by power control and at the network layer through routing protocols. In this work, ATC is provided by changing the network nodes' transmission range by controlling transmit power at the physical layer. This leads to a change in both the number of hops that a packet travels and the transmission rates of the links, due to the signal to noise power ratio. The impact of ATC on the network performance is demonstrated through simulation studies employing a standard medium access control protocol and channel models. The simulation studies show that ATC can significantly alter the behavior of the network. It is observed that ATC through power and rate adjustment can improve the network performance by 27% when compared with non-adaptive topology control.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126533488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides the sensed information to the end-user based on application requirements. To cater to the needs of ICSNs applications, WSNs may need to be deployed on a very large scale. Maintaining network connectivity and longevity in such a large scale deployment of sensor nodes, while catering to the application and service requirements of the ICSN is a challenging task because sensor nodes are very resource constrained in terms of power, communication range and processing capabilities. Hence, we propose the use of cognitive nodes in the underlying WSN, which can help to achieve better management of the sensor network's resources. The cognitive nodes make use of the requested information to learn the dynamic network environment, and make decisions based on the application requirements and current network conditions. Cognitive nodes will use information stored in their knowledge base to help with resource management in the sensor network while catering to the service requirements of the ICSN. The main contribution of this work is to provide a strategy for their deployment in large-scale WSNs used in ICSN applications.","PeriodicalId":314871,"journal":{"name":"2014 27th Biennial Symposium on Communications (QBSC)","volume":"594 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132908010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
