While plenty of new architectures have emerged over the years, their deployment is facing many challenges. To ease the integration and experimentation of such architectures, and thus potentially advance their gradual deployment, we introduce a proxy called “Performance Enhancing Proxy for Deploying Network Architectures (PEP-DNA)”. By “translating” between TCP/IP and the new architecture, PEP-DNA enables TCP/IP-based applications to gain the benefits of future technologies without having to be redeveloped. We consider two novel architectures to illustrate our proxy usage, the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA) and Information-Centric Networking (ICN), but PEP-DNA can be extended to support other architectures. In this demo we walk through realistic scenarios of using PEP-DNA and cover the necessary steps needed for enabling interoperability between TCP/IP applications and a RINA or an ICN network.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132260405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve high performance, regular expressions can be represented as state machines, which are then merged. However, determining which individual state machines should ideally be merged together is a challenging optimization problem. We address this problem by using genetic algorithms with novel problem-specific operators. To allow large scale evaluation of the new operators, we devise two ML-based surrogate models for the expensive fitness evaluation function. Our results from a set of production scale regular expressions show that using the most appropriate operations provides large gains over a naive baseline, but also that no universal best combination of operators exist. We provide some insights into which operators perform best for different objectives, and show the variation between TCP- and UDP-specific regular expressions.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128819104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reason for that lies to vast number of users in both internet and private networks and, of course, to bandwidth hungry applications. Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) aims to meet future needs by incorporating multiple spatial channels in Multi-Core Fibers (MCFs) and/or Multi-Mode Fibers (MMFs). Although SDM has already been applied to terrestrial networks, the submarine SDM territory is currently under investigation. As submarine networks carry almost all intercontinental traffic it is straightforward that employing SDM in these networks is of critical importance. In this paper we survey on new trends for optical submarine networking and we propose an all new SDM optical network for the Mediterranean Sea. The proposed network is based on rules and objectives applied in terrestrial networks: redundancy, cost efficiency, performance and quick failure recovery. We analyze relative network costs considering most of the equipment needed and indicate minimum cost cases.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130051490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To benefit the most of this, a roaming solution must be set in place enabling devices to safely communicate using visited infrastructures either with local service or with the ones from the home networks. As a first step in this direction, this article proposes a new architecture for Non-public Networks roaming, stemming from the 3GPP 5G macro-operator roaming and adapted to the specifics of the communication for geographically-distant, small networks interconnected by third party unreliable backhauls. Furthermore, the architecture is exemplified, and its potential is evaluated as further extensions to the Fraunhofer FOKUS Open5GCore, showing that it outperforms today’s roaming solution in terms of flexibility and privacy of deployment, backhaul usage and reduced network administration.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116695614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The potential of the proposed strategy is investigated considering two reference network topologies from Germany and the USA. We evaluate the impact of using C+L+S-band in terms of capacity and energy consumption. The use of signal regeneration to improve optical performance is also evaluated. We showed that, due to the worse Quality of Transmission (QoT) in the S-band, it provides the smallest capacity increase among the considered transmission bands. Nevertheless, placing some optical signal regenerators in this band enables increasing significantly its capacity. However, this enhancement of capacity is achieved at the cost of increased energy consumption (besides capital expenditures).","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"307 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131634345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of Cellular IoT, mechanisms preventing the communications collapse at the event of failure are desired, if critical applications are to be deployed. In particular, this paper addresses the scenario, in which the end-devices, located in a remote and hard-to-reach area, experience a failure of the only base station in proximity. We propose a reliable and lightweight scheme that sustains the connectivity by means of a Device-to-Device link, established with a foreign device acting as a relay. Since the direct communications occurs only at the time of the failure, the solution introduces minimised overhead towards the relay device, which in our proposal can be realised by constrained hardware. We explain the assumptions, the behaviour and signalling patterns of the system. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our scheme and provide implementation considerations.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121334122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important parameter of QoS is the end-to-end (E2E) delay. From a network management viewpoint, E2E delay models play a crucial role to decide what kind of technology can support the required quality of service. In this paper, we investigate the E2E delay distribution for different communication networks to obtain a comprehensive method to model it. We compare the distribution of the E2E delay for heterogeneous networks with multiple known distributions. Moreover, we quantify the error of adopting known distributions to represent the data in a unified way. The results obtained for the different datasets show that the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution is the approximation exhibiting the lowest error, being a candidate to model the E2E delay for a large variety of scenarios.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122525602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Message-based consensus protocols such as Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (pBFT) adhere partially to said scenario. Protocol phases with many-to-many communication, however, still suffer from quadratic growth in the number of required transmissions to reach consensus. We present several experiments, showing that a significant improvement in the transmission efficiency in the quadratic phases is possible under very reasonable settings through combining RLNC with pBFT into a single hybrid protocol running on a selected layer of the network. Applying the same approach to other combinations of message-based consensus and network coding protocols promises not only a gain in performance, but may also improve robustness and security and open up new application scenarios for RLNC.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122766360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scenario, an efficient analysis depends on a good set of features to classify the traffic. With this goal in mind, we propose a technique based on a new set of features that are computationally inexpensive and descriptive of the data stream. Moreover, the technique considers the flows in many moments, not only when they are finished. We analyze its predicting performance by creating a decision tree model and a logistic regression, which achieved 99.98% and 95.99% Cohen’s Kappa coefficient, respectively. In spirit with the recent trend toward reproducibility of research results, we integrate the proposal in an open-source tool called AnubisFlow. Also, our analysis for the models is available as open data to the scientific community.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131492318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, being cloud native implies more than just replacing Virtual Machines with containers. The cloud native approach changes the way virtual network functions are being composed, deployed, and configured as network services and how these services are being orchestrated and managed at run time. Traditional Network Management and Orchestration (MANO) frameworks are implemented via specialized engines that have been conceived prior to the cloud native era. Thus, they inherit many traits, which impede pivoting to cloud native. In this paper we focus on some fundamental challenges and propose a novel cloud native MANO architecture that exploits advantages of Kubernetes (K8s) a de facto industry standard for container orchestration.","PeriodicalId":314720,"journal":{"name":"2021 12th International Conference on Network of the Future (NoF)","volume":"163 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131990514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
