The case examined is of robot fish designed to follow and monitor real schooling fish. A physical robot fish was developed to the point that it could swim. Further development was hampered by a lack of fish to work with. A digital twin of the robot fish was created and placed into virtual reality. Virtual reality allowed simulations to be setup and modified on the fly which were impossible in the real world. The paper demonstrates the benefits of virtual reality in engineering design and in swarm robotics.","PeriodicalId":314200,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th Annual Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115421189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An important task of this procedure is to find ideas for new product features based on an existing reference product. In industrial practice, usually technical models of the reference product (e.g. CAD models) are employed in the scope of product feature ideation. However, these models alone do not provide sufficient information for the identification of new Internet of Things (IoT) features. These features require the consideration of the available flows, the utilized communication technologies, and the surrounding System of Systems (SoS). A potential solution for this problem is provided by Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). MBSE provides a holistic system model that describes the logical architecture as well as the environment of the reference product. However, there is a lack of methodological support for the utilization of system models in the scope of strategic product planning. This paper presents a novel method for IoT feature ideation based on the system model of a reference product. The core of this method is the so-called IoT canvas, which constitutes an IoT-specific view on the system model of the reference product. It can be systematically derived from the system model and serves as the starting point for product feature ideation. The presented method was evaluated in the scope of an innovation project with a German manufacturing company and showed high potential for industrial practice.","PeriodicalId":314200,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th Annual Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116019113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter is in perpetual evolution thus forcing a recurrent adaptation of the SoS. Thus, during their life cycle the SoS are very exposed to the problem related to the evolution mentioned above. This problem is mainly due to a poor communication between the requirement definition stage and the design stage. In this paper we propose a method for addressing SE for SoS using the concepts Mission and Role. The first one allows the definition of the SoS’s behavior, while the second allows to abstract this definition with respect to the constituent systems that may actually exist in the environment. This definition will be translated into an abstract architecture. The later will serve as a guide and controller of the choices proposed by the system architect during the design and evolution stages. With our approach we have correctly defined an SoS concerning crowd management during a sport event.","PeriodicalId":314200,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th Annual Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129241483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These injuries need fast assistance in order to avoid severe consequences. In this context, some works have proposed approaches that use data from sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope present in devices like smart-phones and smartwatches to detect falls as soon as they happen. However, current approaches still have deficiencies. Some of them need data from more than one device, which is not a typical use case. Other approaches could have better accuracy regarding activity recognition and fall detection. In this paper, we present an algorithm based on thresholds to detect falls that use information collected from a smartwatch accelerometer. To evaluate its performance, we compare it to two other threshold-based algorithms and the results indicate that our approach has a good accuracy in detecting falls and daily activities.","PeriodicalId":314200,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th Annual Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129783243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the integration testing phase, the design office produces requirements of the targeted system, and the test center produces concrete test procedures to be executed on a test bench. In this context, integration tests are mostly written in natural language and manually executed step by step by a tester. In order to formalize integration tests procedures dedicated to each system with domain specific languages approved by testers, and in order to automatize integration tests, we have introduced agile practices in the integration testing phase. We have chosen a Behavior Driven Development (BDD) approach to orchestrate Domain Specific Test Languages produced for the ACOVAS FUI project.","PeriodicalId":314200,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th Annual Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SoSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125845871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
