The experiment was laid out in a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with seven treatments, replicated thrice. The treatments were: 2, 4, 6 and 8 t ha-1 of compost mineral fertilizer, 300 kg ha-1NPK 15: 15: 15, Urea (200 kg ha-1) and the control. Growth parameters such as plant height, stem girth and leaf area were measured at 4, 5 and 6 weeks after planting, dry matter yield (DMY) and grain weight were taken at harvest. Data collected were statistically analysed using Genstat statistical package. In both locations, compost-mineral fertilizer applied at the rate of 6 and 8 t ha-1 significantly (p < 0.05) increased the growth, dry matter and grain yield of maize but not significantly different from each other. The application of compost – mineral fertilizer two weeks after planting significantly (p < 0.05) increased the yield of maize with yield value of 5. 65 t ha-1 compared to other application time. The grain yield values of 5.49 and 5.56 t ha-1 was obtained at Emaudo location and 5.69 and 5.78 t ha-1 at Ujemen with the application of 6 and 8 t ha-1 compost-mineral respectively. The application of compost – mineral fertilizer at the rate of 6 t ha-1. improved the soil fertility resulting to higher yield of maize.","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132407185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globally, the main cause of the energy crisis is a scarcity of natural resources. In this respect, harnessing the abundant renewable sources for energy production can help to alleviate the crisis of energy. Developing countries needs an incessant supply of cheap and clean energy sources. Bioenergy production from biomass such as manure, agricultural residue, and municipal solid waste. it is economically feasible because organic substrates have high nutritive values for micro-organism (especially kitchen waste), high biodegradability rate, and high calorific values. This study has investigated the anaerobic co-digestion of wastewater sludge, Manure and kitchen waste for bio-energy production and analyzed the parameters which have significant effect on digestion process. This process has also decreased the excess of BOD, COD, N and P about 64.07%, 60.16%, 56.06% and 71.02% respectively which indicated the organic fraction utilized by microbes. Anaerobic co-digestion enhances biogas production when treating such wastes wastewater sludge, Manure and kitchen waste combined.","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123692094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pretreatment process variables like substrate concentration, H2O2 concentration, pretreatment time, and temperature were studied individually and in combination to see how they affected the response variables like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content in the pretreated pulp. This was done using the response surface methodology (RSM). The best pretreatment conditions for sugar cane bagasse were found through experiments using a factorial central composite design (CCD). The highest cellulose and hemicellulose yields, which were determined by RSM to be 69.3% and 76.4%, respectively, with a lesser lignin yield (4.8%), were achieved at a substrate concentration of 2%, an H2O2 loading of 20%, a temperature of 120 oC, and a pretreatment duration of 120 min. The experimental actual and predicted outcomes were well correlated, demonstrating that the model may be applied to effectively pretreat lignocellulosic biomass. The model has been validated when there is no difference between experimental actual values and anticipated values. The modifications in the chemical structure of bagasse during pretreatment was analyzed using FTIR. Comparatively, samples processed with H2O2 had a higher crystallinity (CI = 23.63%) than untreated bagasse (CI = 15.84%). The loss of lignin, which contributed the greatest CrI, increased the proportion of cellulose in treated bagasse compared to untreated bagasse. The bagasse that had a H2O2 concentration pretreatment showed the highest reducing sugar yield (58.7 mg/g). Pretreated bagasse had a higher ethanol output (73.88 g/L) than untreated bagasse (45.49 g/L).","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129622736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is because of its nature, quantity generated, cost of transportation and the selection of final storage sites, which together presents a huge challenge for most municipalities. Improper solid waste disposal has serious environmental consequences which ultimately affects human health. The most common problems associated with improper selection and management of final waste disposal sites for solid waste include disease transmission, fire hazards, odour nuisance, air and water pollution, aesthetic nuisance. Economic cost arising from transportation due to long distances of travel to deposit solid waste also discourage the use of waste disposal sites. Municipal solid waste management is considered one of the most serious environmental and social problems faced by municipal authorities in developing countries.. This work considered the selection of a suitable site for the disposal of municipal solid waste generated within the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana, using Multi-Criteria Evaluation technique in G.I.S. To determine the most suitable waste disposal sites in the municipality, the study integrated environmental and socio-economic criteria including proximity to road networks, distance to residential and important built-up areas, water bodies to select the most optimal location for waste disposal. The results showed a total of three (3) proposed suitable sites, out of which a site with reasonably optimal distance as well as easily accessible to roads was preferred as the most suitable site for the municipal solid waste disposal (landfill) in the Wa Municipality.","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121433422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radish is one of the well-known root crops and its popularity could be due to its wider climatic adaptation, easy cultivation methods, and a wider range of its uses. A field experiment was conducted in Taranagar-5, Kailali from Sept-Nov, 2021 to evaluate the influences of different organic manures on the growth and yield of radish. Mino’s early variety of radish was used as a test crop. The experiment was set up in RCBD Design with seven treatments (FYM 30t/ha, Poultry manure 20t/ha, Mustard cake 4t/ha, FYM 15t/ha + Poultry Manure 10t/ha, FYM 15t/ha + Poultry Manure 10t/ha + Mustard Cake 4t/ha, FYM 15t/ha+ Poultry Manure 10t/ha + Mustard Cake 2t/ha and control) and were replicated 3 times. The results revealed that all the growth attributes and yield were significantly enhanced by the application of organic manures. At the time of harvest, significantly higher plant height (46.21cm) was obtained in mustard cake followed by FYM 15t/ha + Poultry manure 10t/ha, a maximum number of leaves per plant (25.53) in mustard application followed by FYM 15ton/ha+ PM10ton/ha + MOC 4ton/ha, root diameter (4.08cm), root length (31.40cm), total dry weight per plant (38.99gm) and biological yield (97.24t/ha) was observed in treatment consisting mustard cake followed by FYM 15ton/ha+ PM10ton/ha + MOC 2ton/ha. The study suggested that the application of mustard cake was found more beneficial and significantly improved the growth and yield of radish.","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123203926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was carried out for 40 days in 2021, to document the effect of biochar on the growth of three important agricultural plant species: radish, lettuce and spinach. The biochar was produced from the biomass of Oak tree under oxygen less condition. The study includes assessment of Petri plate bioassay and pot scale experiment to understand the effect of biochar under saline and non-saline conditions in order to mitigate the problem of salinity. Application of biochar has significantly increased the seed germination for all the seeds. The maximum seed germination was observed for radish > lettuce > spinach. NaCl has reduced the percentage of seed germination but a little increase was observed in case of radish as compared to lettuce and spinach. However, application of biochar has significantly increased its growth as compared to control plant. Both shoot and root of all three studied plants were increased with increase in BC concentrations. The maximum length of root was observed for radish > lettuce > spinach whereas for shoot it was lettuce > radish > spinach. At the same time application of 5 % biochar helped to improve the growth of both radish shoot and root. Lettuce was found sensitive to saline condition and application of biochar does not significantly improve their morphometric parameters. Spinach could be considered as moderately saline resistant species whose biomass can be improved by supplementing with biochar.","PeriodicalId":314179,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Wastes and Biomass Management","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128828739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Bangladesh, onion is grown in winter when rainfall is scarce and plants face deficiency of water. The farmers cannot irrigate the land due to shortage of irrigation facilities or acute financial problem. In this situation soil moisture conservation through mulching may ensure sufficient supply to the growing crop. Mulches have various effects on plant growth and yield. There were significant variation exists on bulb, seed yield and seed quality performance among the genotypes. The experiment was conducted to study the effect of mulching and variety on growth, yield and seed production of onion. Two factors: Factor (A) four mulching treatments, no mulch, natural mulch, rice straw mulch and black polythene mulch; Factor (B) five onion variety Taherpuri, BARI piaz-2, Jhitka, BARI piaz- 4 and BARI piaz-1were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with twenty treatment combinations and three replications. In the experiment it was revealed that black polythene mulch showed highest results on almost all plant, seed yield (1653.79kg/ha) and seed quality characters and lowest result in control treatment. The performance of the mulches was found in order of no mulch < natural mulch < rice straw mulch < black polythene mulch. In case of variety BARI piaz- 4 showed highest results almost on all vegetative, reproductive, seed yield (1476.04 kg/ha) and seed quality characters and lowest result in parameters and lowest result in Jhitka variety. The performance of the onion varieties was found in order of Jhitka <Taherpuri < BARI-1 <BARI-2 <BARI-4. Among the treatment combinations, black polythene mulch with BARI-4 variety produced the highest result and lowest in Jhitka variety with no mulch treatment.
