Edge computing is a new computing paradigm designed to allocate on-demand computing and storage resources. Those resources are web cache servers scattered over the ISP backbones. We argue that this paradigm could be applied for on-demand full application hosting, helping reduce cost. In this paper, we present a J2EE dynamic server able to deploy/host J2EE applications on demand and its autonomic manager. For that, we reengineer and experiment JOnAS, an open-source J2EE static server. Two management policies of the autonomic manager were stressed by a simulation of a worldwide ISP network.

Our accounting scheme relies on the observed relative performance among the parties. It is totally autonomous in the sense that it uses only local information, i.e. there is no exchange of information between the parties. This allows for the deployment of the autonomous accounting without requiring any sort of identification infrastructure, such as certificate authorities. The no need of trust or sophisticated infrastructure make our accounting scheme a perfect fit for peer-to-peer grids, which aim to scale much further than traditional grids by allowing free unidentified entry into the grid. Our results show that the proposed scheme performs very close to a perfect accounting scheme whose implementation is infeasible in most systems, including those we target. Although our autonomous accounting scheme was developed to work with OurGrid, it can also be useful for other systems. The basic requirement to use our accounting scheme is that resource consumers must also be resource providers.

However, most grid implementations focus their security concerns in correctly authenticating users and hosts and in the communications among them. In most cases, application security is left to the underlying operating system. Network infrastructure monitoring, while vital for activities such as service selection, exhibits inherent scalability problems: in principle, in a Grid composed of n resources, we need to keep record of n2 end-to-end paths. We introduce an approach to network monitoring that takes into account scalability: a Grid is partitioned into domains, and network monitoring is limited to the measurement of domain-to-domain connectivity. However, partitions must be consistent with network performance, since we expect that an observed network performance between domains is representative of the performance between the Grid Services included into domains.

Several applications often access large databases (i.e. protein data banks, in the bioinformatics field) without any data access services taking into account characteristics of either applications or data types. Such applications could improve their performance and quality of results by using efficient, cross-DBMS, specialized and ad hoc implemented data access services. The Grid Relational Catalog Project (GRelC) developed at the CACT/ISUFI Laboratory of the University of Lecce provides a grid-enabled access service for relational and not relational repositories. In this paper we propose some advanced delivery mechanisms developed within the GRelC project, showing up experimental results related to an European testbed.

In this scenario, applications, like scientific visualization, require access to data of non-conventional data types, like fluid path geometry, and the evaluation of special user programs on these data. In order to support such applications we are developing CoDIMS-G, which is a data and program integration service for the Grid. CoDIMS-G provides users transparent access to data and programs distributed on the Grid, as well as dynamic resource allocation and management. We conceived a new node scheduling algorithm and designed an adaptive distributed query engine for the grid environment.

The aims are to coupledistributed resources and offer consistent and inexpensive accessto resources irrespective of their physical location. Gridcomputing provides scalable and secure remote access to computing, data, and other resources throughout the Internet. Thesetechnologies enable the clustering of a wide variety ofgeographically distributed resources, i.e., supercomputers, storagesystems, data sources, and special devices and services, that canthen be used as a unified resource.\u0000Much of the focus of Grid until recently has been withinresearch organizations. Currently the involvement of commercialorganization has increased tremendously. That leads to a greaterfocus on integration with commercial computing models and more workon the security and resource management models required forautomated and secure access negotiation for remote resources. Inorder to control such a broad base of resources, Grid Computing hasa middleware layer controlling the distributed execution ofapplications. Under the initial approach based on dedicatedresources or opportunistic resources, were basically related toconstraints on budget and complexity. However by exploring thepossibility of a wider range of applications specially based ondata grids and content networks, a larger diversity of resourcesand devices can be thought participating in a grid system.\u0000The first edition of the MGC workshop was held on June 2003, inconjunction with the Middleware Conference, in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil. MGC'2003 saw a good combination of the many differentflavors in Middleware for Grid Computing, with 16 technicalpresentations and discussions on several stimulating topicsincluding, among others, Classic Grids, object orientedtechnologies, Service-based Grids, Open grid Service Architecture,Agent Grid, Interactive Grid, Grid Economy / Scheduling, andPortlets. After the workshop, extended and thoroughly revisedversions of the papers were invited to a Special Issue ofConcurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience Journalpublished in 2004. MGC'2003 generated substantial interest in thecommunity and we hope to build on this tradition this year. Farfrom exhausting the topics of interest, it paved the way for asecond edition of the workshop.\u0000The goal of the second edition of the MGC workshop is to bringtogether researches in the field of middleware, addressinglargescale and real world problems in grid environments, includingthe most interesting and stimulating topics emerged last year, andsome novel ones as Strategies and Protocols for obtaining Qualityof Services, Virtualization, Wireless Grids, Data Grid Middleware,Semantic Grid Middleware, Dependability and Fault Tolerance in GridMiddleware and Managing Information.\u0000The second workshop received an unexpectedly hi

Therefore, enough servers should be assigned to a service to guarantee quality of service. But reserving a lot of resources for peak access is not cost effective, because these resources are idle most of the time.\u0000 In order to solve this problem, technologies called utility computing or autonomic computing have been proposed and are under development. However, these technologies utilize resources only within one organization.\u0000 In this paper, we present an autonomic system architecture that uses distributed resources leveraged by Grid technology. In our architecture, computing resources are rented from different organizations. Our architecture supports J2EE systems; hence, existing Web applications can be used without any modification. In addition, our architecture considers the location of the resources when redirecting a request to a server and allocating a new server, thereby leading to better performance. We adopted WS-Agreement as an interface for negotiating service level agreements.\u0000 We have implemented and evaluated this system and confirmed the effectiveness of this architecture.
