The sukuk markets have advanced in the way of using tangible assets to receivables as an underlying asset. Premised on this development, sukuk structures have shifted from asset-backed to asset-based to asset-light and blended-assets. Given this evolution, this study will trace the development of innovation in the sukuk structure. Observed here are changes or trends in the sukuk structure, including how market participants‟ demands and Shariah issues influenced such changes in the sukuk. The main issues that emerge are: firstly, sufficient physical assets in response to the demands of issuers; and secondly, solutions offered by Shariah advisors who play a role in shaping the issued sukuk structure.","PeriodicalId":31275,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67167701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We employed three different daily data set, full sample period from 18/07/2001 to 27/07/2007, the pre-crisis period between 18/07/2001 to 27/07/2007 and the post-crisis period between 09/03/2009 to 31/01/2017. This paper employs a structural vector auto-regression (SVAR) model. In fact, this research investigates the dynamic relationship between gold, stocks, bond market and exchange rate. The exchange rate variable consists of USD/MYR, RMB/MYR and EURO/MYR. This analysis suggest that gold return appear to be a weak safe haven for stock, diversifier for bonds and a weak hedge against USD/MYR. Finally, the results confirm that stock return is a weak hedge for government bond.","PeriodicalId":31275,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67167689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The role of Islamic deposit insurance is to create a level playing field between Islamic and conventional banks apart from maintaining a foundation for public confidence in the banks it is also to reinforce the consumer protection aspects that are inherent in Islam. However virtually all the existing DISs are established on legal, regulatory and operational framework devoid of any Islamic bias, meanwhile the Islamic banks and their customers are as much in need of this protection, assurance and sustenance of confidence produced by the scheme as their conventional counterparts. The research therefore examines some of the controversies in the operation of Deposit Insurance as well as its compatibility with Shariah rules under which Islamic banks operate. It looks into the needs and the extent to which Islamic banks can participate into the scheme. The paper concludes that objectives of DIS is compatible with Shariah but also finds out that its designs and some of its operations need to be adjusted for Islamic banks to fully integrated without impairing the provisions of Shariah.","PeriodicalId":31275,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67166837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Driven by the repercussions of the 2008 financial crisis and the repercussions of the Arab Spring, countries in North Africa have started reinforcing the core pillars that support the growth of a complete Islamic banking industry. Morocco is a fresh entrant to this discipline with a progressive path. This careful approach began with the introduction of Alternative Finance in 2007 and was confirmed by the Participative Banking act chapter in 2014. In this sense, the aim of this paper is to analyze the Kingdom’s inventory of fixtures as a newcomer to the Islamic banking. Precisely, the following work will attempt to identify the main strengths, challenges and limitations underlying the paradigm of Islamic banking in Morocco.","PeriodicalId":31275,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance","volume":"69 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67166790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus of this paper is on the mudharabah deposits. For that purpose, a model is set up to estimate the changes of Islamic deposit. In line with this issue, we find that four variables are being considered: Non performing financing, reserve, rate of return, and interest rate. The data were collected from 16 Islamic Banks in Malaysia and 11 Islamic Banks in Indonesia during the period 2010 – 2015. This study used panel data and generalised least square method. The findings show that conventional interest rates and non-performing financing for both countries have a negative relationship with the changes of Mudharabah deposits, while rate of return and bank reserve have a positive relationship and significant with the changes of Mudharabah deposits. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first attempt to empirically examine the differentiation of customer bank’s behaviour towards Islamic deposit product in Malaysia and Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":31275,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67167604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
