This design aims to minimize reliance on co‐initiators, reduce potential odors and toxicities, and enhance initiation efficiency of PIs under LED irradiation. Additionally, the incorporation of thioether linkages imparts a distinctive dual functionality to PIs, enabling them to exhibit both hydrogen‐abstracting (Type II) and bond‐breaking (Type I) characteristics. The photophysical and photoinitiation properties of BP‐Sn were evaluated using electron paramagnetic resonance, UV‐visible spectrophotometry, and real‐time Fourier‐transform Infrared spectroscopy. The findings demonstrate that BP‐Sn exhibit remarkable efficacy as a single‐component PI for free‐radical polymerization, achieving a final conversion efficiency approaching 95% and a photoinitiation rate exceeding 20% s −1 for the polymerization of tripropylene glycol diacrylate without the need for additional co‐initiators. Furthermore, the polymerization experiment revealed that exposure to 365 nm LED light for just 2 min results in the formation of a colorless and well‐defined patterned texture, with a thickness of 5 mm and a diameter of 7 cm, demonstrating its potential practical applications.","PeriodicalId":312330,"journal":{"name":"Smart Molecules","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdfdirect/10.1002/smo.20240065","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147898661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chemical sensing at the functionalized side chains can manipulate such polymer characteristics, resulting in various optical patterns depending on the analyte structures and their concentrations. The unique optical patterns derived from polymer properties contribute to group categorization over a wide concentration range for pattern recognition. This review aims to provide a concise overview of the potential of PT chemosensor arrays using actual sensing examples in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and food analysis. For food and drug and analysis there is a strong desire to detect SA. Since SA is a very small molecule, aptamers have advantages over antibodies for its detection. In this work, we used the library‐immobilization capture‐SELEX method to isolate aptamers for SA. After 17 rounds of selection, two main families of aptamers were isolated. The SA1 aptamer from family 1 has a Kd of 5.8 μM from a thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence assay and 26.7 μM from isothermal titration calorimetry. The binding of other sequences was weaker compared to SA1. Based on mutation studies, the two conserved regions of SA1 were connected by two stems. Using ThT as a stain, a label‐free fluorescent sensor was tested for the detection of SA with a detection limit of 2.2 μM. A few similar molecules were tested including aspirin, and only p‐hydroxybenzoic acid showed a weak binding, indicating the high specificity of the SA1 aptamer. Finally, the SA1 aptamer was also tested in tomato juice and a similar binding performance was achieved.","PeriodicalId":312330,"journal":{"name":"Smart Molecules","volume":"s1-8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127197911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fluorescence imaging is a privileged method to visualize proteins with subcellular precision in live cells. In recent years, there has been a tremendous advance in the field of fluorescent dyes that are optically more sophisticated than genetically‐encodable fluorescent proteins. In this review, we aim to discuss modern bioconjugation methods to specifically incorporate these dyes into protein‐of‐interests. We focus on advances in live‐cell labeling strategies and fluorescent probes, especially the HaloTag, SNAP‐tag, TMP‐tag, and unnatural amino acid systems and their applications. These protein labeling methods, along with cutting‐edge dyes and novel microscopy methods, have become the infrastructure for biological research in the era of super‐resolution imaging.","PeriodicalId":312330,"journal":{"name":"Smart Molecules","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123639475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that its intramolecular Woodward‐Hoffmann cyclic intermediate instantaneously converts back to the original state within several picoseconds, the essentially photochromic characteristic of TPE is little investigated. Achieving a visible photocyclization of TPE is still an unsolved issue and considered as the bottleneck in the further advancement of applications. We report a strategy of attaching carbonate ester onto the TPE skeleton (TPE‐4C) to enhance TPE photocyclization stability. As demonstrated, the incorporated cholesteryloxycarbonyloxy substituents in TPE‐4C can increase the energy barrier for cycloreversion, thereby exhibiting extremely thermal stability of photocyclic intermediate upon UV irradiation, prolonging its lifetime from 63 picoseconds to 46 s by 7.2 × 1011‐fold. The photoinduced cyclization of TPE‐4C could be monitored with naked eyes, and the photocyclization/cycloreversion is achieved by turning on/off UV light along with a relative fatigue resistance. Encapsulation of TPE‐4C into the liquid crystal can induce a striking phase transformation (achiral↔chiral), which can be applicable to encode optical information. Employing carbonate ester into the TPE unit plays a vital role in enhancing the unprecedented TPE photocyclization stability, providing a toolbox to allow TPE‐based photocyclization to be visually monitored.","PeriodicalId":312330,"journal":{"name":"Smart Molecules","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117295930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
