Modeling and reasoning human intentional changes is important because misunderstanding of these changes may lead to incorrect adaptations and system failures. It is also a difficult task since human intentions are hard to represent universally and to quantify by numbers or equations. This paper addresses this challenge based on discussions of the basic requirements for modeling and reasoning changes in social-technical systems. A change hierarchy is given to guide the discussion. A goal-oriented approach to modeling and reasoning intentional changes in social-technical systems is proposed by integrating desirable features from two methods. This approach is obtained by investigating the advantages and limitations of system dynamics modeling and the i* framework.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129669477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A proof-of-concept system, X-Ray Specs, has been developed for evaluating and experimenting with content-based image retrieval on radiographs of skeletal dysplasias. Its domain-dependent sub-system uses a hybrid case-base/rule-base as an important part of its image classification and retrieval process. This proved more accurate than other classification/retrieval systems tested in X-Ray Specs. The case-base/rule-base sub-system is flexible and could function in any domain where suitable parameters can be extracted.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"34 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128336476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The TRMS is an experimental aerodynamic test bed representing the control challenges of unmanned aerial vehicles. In this study a nonlinear dynamic model of the system is considered and a nonlinear inverse model is used for the pitch channel of the system. The feedback control system and an adaptive neural network element are integrated to compensate the possible model inversion errors. The proposed online learning algorithm updates the weights and biases of the neural network using the error between the setpoint and the real output. Square and sinusoidal reference command signals are used to test the performance of the controller. It is noted that a reasonable tracking response is exhibited in the presence of inversion errors caused by model uncertainty. This paper is the experimental study of the previous work by the same authors in which the proposed method has only been verified by simulation results.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114360578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A school timetable is a weekly schedule for all the teachers of the school and allocates class periods to teachers according to some constraints. Genetic algorithm has been previously used as a powerful tool for timetabling problems but the intrinsic complexity of these problems and the usually huge number of variables makes it slow and complex. The basic idea of this paper is splitting this complexity into several simple algorithms and cooperatively evolving them. We regard teachers' timetable as various species in the population and aim to evolve them in a way that provide the best fit to the constraints. Our numerical results show that the proposed method is able to solve the school timetabling problem in much less time and with superior performance in comparison with the existing algorithms.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127982910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal for this work is to emphasis the potential benefits of this architecture for real system identification. Among the most prevalent networks are multi-layered perceptron NNs using Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) training algorithm and Elman recurrent NNs. These methods are used for the identification of a twin rotor multi-input multi-output system (TRMS). The TRMS can be perceived as a static test rig for an air vehicle with formidable control challenges. Therefore, an analysis in modeling of nonlinear aerodynamic function is needed and carried out in both time and frequency domains based on observed input and output data. Experimental results are obtained using a laboratory set-up system, confirming the viability and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127477021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many different approaches, which are usually used for decision making and prediction, have been invented to construct decision tree classifiers. These approaches try to optimize parameters such as accuracy, speed of classification, size of constructed trees, learning speed, and the amount of used memory. There is a trade off between these parameters. That is to say that optimization of one may cause obstruction in the other, hence all existing approaches try to establish equilibrium. In this study, considering the effect of the whole data set on class assigning of any data, we propose a new approach to construct not perfectly accurate, but less complex trees in a short time, using small amount of memory. To achieve this purpose, a multi-step process has been used. We trace the training data set twice in any step, from the beginning to the end and vice versa, to extract the class pattern for attribute selection. Using the selected attribute, we make new branches in the tree. After making branches, the selected attribute and some records of training data set are deleted at the end of any step. This process continues alternatively in several steps for remaining data and attributes until the tree is completely constructed. In order to have an optimized tree the parameters which we use in this algorithm are optimized using genetic algorithms. In order to compare this new approach with previous ones we used some known data sets which have been used in different researches. This approach has been compared with others based on the classification accuracy and also the decision tree size. Experimental results show that it is efficient to use this approach particularly in cases of massive data sets, memory restrictions or short learning time.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129737055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the observation that irrespective of skin colour, colour variations occur the most in the eye region. In the proposed method, edges are detected in the input facial image. Morphological dilation is applied twice and the holes are filled in the connected regions. This makes the high density edges regions appear as blobs. Certain shapes and geometrical rules are applied to these blobs to extract the eyes. The method was tested using images from the PICS facial images database. The accuracies of the initial blobs extraction and the final eyes extraction were 95% and 72% respectively.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"358 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124511906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To allow a valid and useful comparison among various situations/objects according to their associated numerical scores to be made, two important properties, i.e., the monotone output property and output resolution properties, are essential in fuzzy inference-based assessment problems. In this paper, the conditions for a fuzzy assessment model to fulfill the monotone output property is investigated using a derivative approach. A guideline on how the input membership functions should be tuned is also provided. Besides, the output resolution property is defined as the derivative of the output of the assessment model with respect to the input, whereby the derivative should be greater than a minimum resolution. Based on the derivative, improvements to the output resolution property by refining the fuzzy production rules are suggested. A case study on the Bowles fuzzy RPN model to demonstrate the effectiveness of the properties is also included.","PeriodicalId":311925,"journal":{"name":"2008 7th IEEE International Conference on Cybernetic Intelligent Systems","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122655473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
