I focus on these two groups as the foundational bearers of negative identiWcation in the constitution of the modern nation-state. In its Central European (that is, German) variant, the nation-state was invented in the late nineteenth century as an ethnically homogenous and intrinsically masculinist entity, a narrative whose cultural coherence depended on the systematic abjection of Jews and homosexuals. Through the modern twin discourses of antisemitism and homophobia, these groups were mobilized and fortiWed as the constitutive outsides of respectable Germanness, thereby allowing the retrospective Wxing of the nation-state as a fantasized public space of ethnic and sexual purity. Jews and queers thus Wgured as symptoms of modernity, abject by-products whose irreducible Otherness underwrote the Wctions of the modern nation-state. Following Zygmunt Bauman, I read the Holocaust in this analytic context as a quintessentially modern event, taking the exclusionary principles of German nation-building to its catastrophic conclusion. The nation had been imagined in constitutive opposition to Jews and queers; the Holocaust was designed to eVect their complete eradication from the German (and Austrian) public sphere. As an empirical project, Symptoms of Modernity begins in the wake of the Holocaust. I read the postwar period of Austrian history as a moment of late Central European modernity.
