However, only studies on the effect of these organic CIs on the corrosion and electrochemical behavior of aluminum and mainly its alloys are covered here. In contrast to the previously considered metals protected by these CIs (Cu, Zn, Fe), their alloys and steels, the protective layers formed by BTA and its derivatives are generally not due to hardly soluble complex compounds with the cations of the base metal. In addition to the adsorption of benzotriazoles on aluminum alloys, their ability to block copper and copper-containing intermetallics, which can initiate local corrosion of aluminum itself, plays an important role. The ability of BTA to enhance the protection of aluminum alloys in neutral solutions with other CIs is noted. BTA and its substituted derivatives can be very useful in obtaining protective conversion coatings on copper-containing aluminum alloys. Since direct incorporation of CI into coatings can cause their undesirable chemical interaction with the binder and other process additives, BTA and its derivatives can first be incorporated into nanoor microcontainers made of a neutral material, and only then such containers are incorporated into paints or other protective coating materials. A brief analysis of the advantages of such coatings containing encapsulated BTA or its substituted derivatives is given. Examples of their use in protective coatings, often called self-healing or “smart” coatings, are given. Although the ability of BTA and its derivatives to slow down acid corrosion of aluminum alloys has been little studied, it has been found that they mainly slow down the cathodic reaction, and incorporation of a substituent into position 5 of BTA enhances its inhibitory properties in hydrochloric acid solutions.","PeriodicalId":310379,"journal":{"name":"Corrosion: Materials, Protection","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132696779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the tested silanes, PSH is the most efficient one, followed by the vinyl derivatives (VS and PSMA) and finally by BTSE. In fact, in comparison to the other silanes, PSH determines a more significant reduction in the cathodic and anodic polarization currents and maintains a higher degree of protection for at least 24 h. Afterwards, it gradually loses its protective effects. Conversely, VS, BTSE, PSMA conversion coatings allow the onset of significant corrosion rates within a few hours. In all silane coatings, the addition of CeAlO 3 nanoparticles increases both the coating protectiveness and the persistence of the protective action. In particular, the higher the silane coating performance, the greater the enhancing effect of the nanoparticles. Thus, CeAlO 3 nanoparticles particularly improve the protectiveness of PSH conversion coating, which displays an inhibiting efficiency of over 99%, after 168 h of immersion in 0.1 M NaCl solution. On this coating type containing nanoparticles, the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations evidence an increase in the layer thickness from 3.5±0.5 µm to 5.6±0.6 µm and a decrease in the layer porosity. Therefore, the nanoparticles induce slower diffusion processes, which particularly slow down the anodic reaction, so hindering the overall corrosion process.","PeriodicalId":310379,"journal":{"name":"Corrosion: Materials, Protection","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128500411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
