Our approach is based on radial basis neural networks and on the principle of particles filters. More precisely, the usual learning phase of the network is replaced by the generation of a lot of particles, i.e. simulated system trajectories. Particles so generated correspond to neural centers. Inspite of its complex structure such a network possesses good properties. First, we show that the network output converges to the optimal filter when the number of particles grows. Second, the implementation is very simple and the computational time is reasonable. And finally, on simulations good performances are observed with respect to that of the extended kalman filter and that of an optimal recurrent neural network.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126643627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is a challenging topic in data mining, it has been acquiring increasing attention due to its huge potential for immediate applications. In this paper, a new algorithm for time-series novelty detection based on one-class support vector machines (SVMs) is proposed. The concepts of phase and projected phase spaces are first introduced, which allows us to convert a time-series into a set of vectors in the (projected) phase spaces. Then we interpret novel events in time-series as outliers of the \"normal\" distribution of the converted vectors in the (projected) phase spaces. One-class SVMs are employed as the outlier detectors. In order to obtain robust detection results, a technique to combine intermediate results at different phase spaces is also proposed. Experiments on both synthetic and measured data are presented to demonstrate the promising performance of the new algorithm.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"26 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122425554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Original SVOCC is to identify the support domain of input data. When it is used for clustering, the high computational complexity for identifying cluster gaps between any pair points makes it less likely to be used in large data sets. In addition, the identified clusters cannot be visually displayed in high dimensions larger than three. Self-organizing map (SOM) is a neural network approach, which can project high-dimensional data into usually 2-D grid while preserving topology of input data. By using the proposed SVVC algorithm, resulting map can visually display high-dimensional cluster shapes and corresponding clusters can be found. Outliers and cluster borders can be clearly identified on the map, which is better than other visualization and clustering methods on SOM. The computational complexity of SVVC is less than the method of directly clustering by SVOCC.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122667731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MLP-SINN is more suitable for hardware implementation than SINN with a large number of interconnections. However, the capabilities of MLP and SINN are not effectively used in the conventional MLP-SINN, because they are synthesized independently. The consensus emerging from these studies places attentional effects first in extrastriate areas. Attentional influence in this view is reaching V1 rather late, some 150 ms after stimulus onset, well after the main N1/P1 complex which peaks about 50 ms earlier. We show here that an earlier wave of attentional effects is present in V1 beginning soon after 50 ms and reaching a peak between 90 and 100 ms after stimulus onset. This effect is identified in a comparison of passive viewing of stimuli and an active GO/NOGO task using the same stimuli. The effect was best seen in the tomographic analysis of single trial magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data, designed to cope with simultaneous activations throughout the brain at each timeslice. This early attentional modulation might still be interpreted as a modulation of the striate cortex from extrastriate areas because attention related changes are present in the prestimulus period in both dorsal and ventral extrastriate areas.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122015364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Models of variance for channel transistors are developed using the assumption that discrete steps in the process introduce statistically independent variance components through particular physical mechanisms. In contrast, inputs from distal synapses have long delays, low amplitude, and long duration. Large scale neural networks are seldom built with realistically layered synaptic architectures and corresponding electrotonic parameters. A complete representation of electrotonic dynamics implies the computationally expensive solution of cable differential equations. Here, we use a simpler model to investigate the spike response dynamics of networks with different electrotonic structures. The networks consist of a layer of neurons receiving a sparse feedforward projection from a set of inputs, as well as sparse recurrent connections from within the layer. Firing patterns are set in the set of inputs, and recorded from the neuron (output) layer. The feedforward and recurrent synapses are independently set as proximal or distal, representing dendritic connections near or far from the soma, respectively. Analyses of firing dynamics indicate that recurrent distal synapses tend to concentrate network activity in fewer neurons, while proximal recurrent synapses result in a more homogeneous activity distribution. In addition, when the feedforward input is regular (spiking or bursting) and asynchronous, the output is regular if recurrent synapses are more distal than feedforward ones, and irregular in the opposite configuration. Finally, the amplitude of network fluctuations in response to asynchronous input is lower if feedforward and recurrent synapses are electrotonically distant from one another (in either configuration). In conclusion, electrotonic effects reflecting different dendritic positions of synaptic inputs significantly influence network dynamics.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128775658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ECOS evolve their structure and functionality from an incoming stream of data in either a supervised-, of/and in an unsupervised mode. The algorithm is illustrated on a case study of predicting a chaotic time-series that changes its dynamics over time. With the on-line parameter optimisation of ECOS, a faster adaptation and a better prediction is achieved. With the availability of hardware implementation of these networks, it has become desirable to measure their fault-tolerance to structural and environmental faults as well as tolerance to noise in the system variables. In this paper, the learning system model is used to describe a framework in which these studies can be conducted. Fault models are describes and error measures suggested. The relation between fault-tolerance and the generalization capabilities of the network is conjectured and the relevance of regularization capabilities of the network is conjectured and the relevance of regularization scheme to fault tolerance property discussed. The available literature on fault-tolerance of neural networks is briefly summarized in the proposed framework. Areas for further exploration are identified.","PeriodicalId":310128,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2003.","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130513629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
