Inspired by the progress on fabricating carbon nanotubes with Janus edges [ACS Nano 13, 8836 (2019)], we construct graphene nanoribbons with Janus edges, where one edge is armchair type and the other one possesses triangular protrusions with zigzag-armchair or zigzag-zigzag sub-edges. By first-principles calculations, Spin Seebeck effect is found. Further analysis shows that, it is resulted from the difference of Fermi distributions between the two electrodes, which is triggered by temperature difference, and the peculiar transmission spectra, where two transmission peaks with opposite spins reside discretely on both sides of E F . These two peaks are contributed by the corresponding bands with opposite spins above and below E F respectively, which are induced by the sub-edges. We believe our findings would be useful in developing graphene-based spin caloritronics.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128735690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The requirement of human input is both costly and subjective and cannot keep up with the current volume of experimentally and computationally generated microstructure images. In this work, we develop a framework that is capable of reducing the cost of human annotation in this process by leveraging novel machine learning procedures for class discovery and label assignment. To reduce the penalty of a poor label assignment made by this automated process, labels are only assigned to high-confidence observations while ambiguous data are left unlabeled. Semi-supervised classification is then employed to leverage the high- and low-confidence label assignments, and a novel generalization of an established semi-supervised error estimation technique to the multi-class context is introduced to assess the resulting classifiers. Finally, it is shown that this framework can be used to produce highly accurate classifiers over microstructure image class taxonomies which are discovered solely through data-driven methods and which display consistent structural trends within and distinct morphological differences between classes.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129365737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alterative finely controlled growth of these ultra-thin materials is not really successful. This work demonstrates how a technique can be used to unzip and disintegrate ultra-thin crystal plane (e.g. monolayered nanocrystals and nanosheets) from bulk non-layered structures (ZnO, alpha/belta-MnO2, TiO2, alpha-TiB2), and present how the basic optical properties changed to distinguish from their bulk phases. Unlike the well-established dislocation slip and necking deformation process that occurs in large crystals, recent theories that explain TBS are often controversial, and much remains unsettled. Herein, we develop a factor that enables the prediction of deformation pathways by quantitatively analyzing the relative tendency for the formation of partial dislocations based on the dislocation and fault energy theories. The developed factor considers the effects of static/extrinsic features, such as the stacking fault energy (SFE) as well as the crystal size and orientation, and dynamic structural states characterized by the various fault energies of a material. The factor is initially validated using a Cu crystal exhibiting low SFE for various orientations and sizes. To determine whether the proposed factor can be generically extended to crystals with high SFE, we perform micro-mechanical tensile tests and molecular dynamics simulations on Al nanowires. The developed factor produces self-consistent results even for metals exhibiting different SFE values. The observations can be used as a guideline to design nanoscale structures for load-carrying applications.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134096258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, a multifunctional Mn, N, and S incorporated carbon quantum dots (MnNS:CDs) exhibiting scavenging activity against reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), photoluminescence quantum yield of 17.7 %, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast was explored. The optical, magnetic, and antioxidant properties of MnNS:CDs were then regulated by control over Mn incorporation to achieve higher photostability and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, conjugation of MnNS:CDs with hyaluronic acid (HA) (denoted as MnNS:CDs@HA) endowed them with high biocompatibility, which is validated by in vivo studies on zebrafish, and the ability to specifically target cluster determinant 44 (CD44)-overexpressing B16F1 cells, as verified by in vitro confocal and MRI studies. The MnNS:CDs@HA probe with therapeutic antioxidant and dual-modal imaging capability was further assessed for non-covalent binding of doxorubicin (DOX) as a model chemotherapeutic cancer drug. Results showed that targeted delivery and pH-dependent release of DOX elicited apparent cell toxicity (90%) toward B16F1 cancer cells when compared to free DOX treatment group (60%). Benefiting from their intrinsic antioxidant properties, and dual-modal imaging ability, the MnNS:CDs@HA nanocarrier is projected to improve non-invasive targeted diagnosis and therapy.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116357628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when tumor cells are exposed to the maximum concentration of a chemotherapeutic drug, the best effect can be achieved. Here we developed a strategy (graphic summary) to enhance the therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities of known chemotherapeutics. We used a dual-mode near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence/photoacoustic imaging technology to actively guide the photothermal therapeutic agent indocyanine green (ICG) and a chemotherapeutic drug 2-methoxyestradiol (2-ME) loaded into thermosensitive liposomes (TSLs), on the surfaces of which was grafted the tumor-targeting peptide cRGDyk, (cRGDyk-2-ME@ICG-TSL) to the tumor target. Drug release studies have shown that TSL has a satisfactory performance for targeting and releasing 2-ME under the high temperature conditions induced by NIR laser irradiation. In vitro studies confirmed that cRGDyk-2-ME@ICG-TSLs can effectively induce drug accumulation and cytotoxicity in B16-F10 melanoma cells under near-infrared laser irradiation using cRGDyk peptide and temperature-sensitive dual targeting. Twenty-four hours after the intravenous injection of cRGDyk-2-ME@ICG-TSLs into melanoma tumor-bearing mice, dual-mode NIR fluorescence/photoacoustic imaging could accurately identify tumors and normal tissues. In addition, the combination of cRGDyk-2-ME@ICG-TSLs and NIR radiation suppressed tumor growth in nude mice bearing tumors and was associated with a lower risk of side effects on normal organs. Our results indicate that TSLs can increase the therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic drugs and is suitable as a drug delivery system for diagnostic and tumor treatment tools guided by dual-mode imaging.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116663243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, we have fabricated a range of oxide ceramic nanofiber films that exhibit significant softness without fragility after various deformations by developing a sol-gel electrospinning technology followed by calcination. This approach causes the ceramic crystals to fuse together at a low temperature during their growth within the polymer nanofiber templates. All of the created oxide ceramics, from SiO<sub>2</sub> to BaTiO<sub>3</sub>, Li<sub>0.33</sub>La<sub>0.56</sub>TiO<sub>3</sub> and Li<sub>7</sub>La<sub>3</sub>Zr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>12</sub>, have silk-like softness of <31 mN, flyweight density of <0.36 g/cm<sup>3</sup> and robust fire-resistance to 1000 °C. Fabricated separators based on these films display high liquid electrolyte uptakes of >900% and thermal-insulation performance, enhancing the rate capability and safety of Li-batteries. The reported approach allows low-cost and scalable synthesis of oxide ceramic films that possess both soft and rigid properties.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"291 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121083244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the highly complex polyphenolic-structure of lignin, depolymerisation without a prior chemical treatment is challenging, and new, superior catalysts are required. Atomically dispersed catalysts containing isolated atoms are able to maximize the atomic efficiency of noble metals in a catalytic process, simultaneously providing an alternative strategy to tune the activity and selectivity by alloying with other abundant metal supports. Herein, we report a highly active and selective catalyst comprising monodispersed (single) Pt atoms on Ni nanoparticles supported on carbon (denoted as Pt1Ni/C where Pt1 represent single Pt atoms), designed for the reductive depolymerization of lignin. Selectivity towards 4-n-propylsyringol and 4-n-propylguaiacol, in which the aromatic rings are preserved, exceeds 90%. The activity and selectivity of the engineered Pt1Ni/C catalyst in the reductive depolymerization of lignin may be attributed to synergistic effects between the Ni nanoparticles that promote dissociation of H2 and supply the absorbed hydrogen to the single Pt atoms where cleavage of the C-O bonds takes place.","PeriodicalId":309999,"journal":{"name":"EngRN: Micro & Nano Technologies & Materials (Topic)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114792729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
