Its purpose is to reconstruct a particular situation involving the recognition and understanding of fascism. This situation is determined by both history and the social dynamics of the present day. The time and place is Italy of the 1960s and 70s, the observer – Pier Paolo Pasolini. But not because he offers us an original, complex and versatile theory of fascism. On the contrary, Pasolini can be superficial and rash, while his polemic passion often devours the argument and the analysis. However, Pasolini’s method of intellectual and political involvement allows us to use it as a keystone of a makeshift synthesis of a certain version of leftist anti-fascism. Piera Paola Pasoliniego pętla faszystowskaPoniższy tekst jest studium przypadku. Janicka","doi":"10.11649/slh.2687","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/slh.2687","url":null,"abstract":"Under a Non-Existent Commemorative Plaque: The 84th Anniversary of the Introduction of the Ghetto Bench at the University of Warsaw – A Speech Delivered at the Ceremony Organized by the Student Antifascist Committee in the Courtyard of the University of Warsaw on October 5, 2021The ghetto bench (1937) is emblematic of the process by which anti-Semitism was legalized andinstitutionalized in the interwar Republic of Poland (1918–1939). This text focuses on the failure to include this knowledge in the mainstream narrative, a problem which continues to this day. The lack of an integrated history results from a lack of condemnation, and from the fact that the dominant majority has not broken away from the framework of assumptions of concealed processes and events. After 1989, these assumptions have been additionally celebrated in the cult of interwar Polish statehood. The collision of the Polish dominant culture with the liberal-democratic formal-legal framework produced the collapse of liberal democracy in Poland (2015). This text thus questions the location of the ghetto bench and its cultural representations in the field of memory studies. Brak historii zintegrowanej wynika z braku potępienia i odcięcia się przez dominującą większość od ramowych założeń przemilczanych procesów i wydarzeń. Po 1989 roku założenia te są dodatkowo celebrowane w kulcie międzywojennej polskiej państwowości. Zderzenie polskiej kultury dominującej z liberalno-demokratyczną ramą formalno-prawną wyprodukowało upadek liberalnej demokracji (2015). Tekst kwestionuje tym samym lokowanie getta ławkowego i jego kulturowych reprezentacji w polu badań nad pamięcią. And a Search for LifeWhen it comes to writing about Pier Paolo Pasolini’s oeuvre, nobody can approach it without a subjective and political position. The author of this text takes as his point of departure the presence of the poet and filmmaker in his host country Italy, where the name Pasolini means much more than merely the name of an author. Pasolini stands for the rebellious spirit at a time when the Italian economic miracle was coming to an end, during which a great “contaminazione” (Pasolini), a mutual “infectiousness” took place between the vulgar and the sublime, the culture of the poor suburbs and the discourses of the intellectuals, between old myths and new seductions. In this situation, Pasolini’s texts and films are searching for a way to counter the horror of a new fascism in the form of the petit bourgeois “consumistic” rule with a “force of the past”. Points of reference for this are a radical Catholicism and communism, the latter moving via a Marxist analysis of society to an archaic Ur-communism. Pasolini always saw himself as a stranger. Almost all of his films (leaving aside the vital “Trilogy of Life”, from which he distanced himself in his last and most radical film “Salò”) are attempts to look into the strangeness of the familiar and the familiarity of the strange. In doing so, the author and filmmaker never spared himself; his films are a magic autobiography. To put it another way, Pasolini’s biography makes his films “readable” and his films make the inner history of Italy (and to a certain extent that of Europe as a whole) in the sixties and seventies “readable”, just as in his films bodies make “readable” ideas and ideas make “readable” bodies. Texts on Pier Paolo Pasolini can be markings for these processes of reading. However, they can never be a substitute for following one’s own way which leads back and forth between both the physicality (the reality of the streets, “contaminated” by art history) and the world of ideas (the myth and religion, “contaminated” with Marxism and psychoanalysis). Pasolini: faszyzm – konsumpcjonizm – katolicyzm. Rola Polaków w Zagładzie na przykładzie zamordowania rodziny Nachmana Blumentala w Wielopolu Skrzyńskim podczas okupacji niemieckiej","authors":"Katrin Stoll","doi":"10.11649/slh.2358","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/slh.2358","url":null,"abstract":"Producing an Antisemitic Consensus within the Framework of the Judenjagd: The Role of Poles in the Holocaust Based on the Murder of Nachman Blumental’s Family in Wielopole Skrzyńskie during the German OccupationThis article – which is based on the records of Nachman Blumental that I discovered as part of my work on his archive material and that I brought to light, as well as on the documentation of two official investigations – deals with the complicity of Poles – uniformed (the policja granatowa, or Blue Police) and civilians – in the Nazi project to kill every Jew without exception in Dębica County during the German occupation. I analyze the mechanism that set in motion antisemitic violence within the framework of the Judenjagd, i.e. the Jew hunt. I argue that it was attitudes and behaviors in the environment that determined the effectiveness of the German Nazi project to persecute and murder all Jews without exception. The majority group plays the role of “second instance” (Elżbieta Janicka). By reconstructing the crime against Ariel Blumental and Maria Blumental in June 1943 in Brzeziny, Mała and Wielopole Skrzyńskie, and by deconstructing the mystification of the crime by the inhabitants, I uncover the foundations of this process and show how the mechanism of self-representation as non-involved functions. “Participating observers” (Elżbieta Janicka) mask their own participation in the murder of Nachman Blumental’s family. The task, then, is to interpret both what is said and what is not said. The crime discussed in the article is emblematic in that it sheds light on the socio-cultural framework of the Holocaust and its landscape. {"title":"Kocioł katolicko-narodowy","authors":"Dominika Macocha","doi":"10.11649/slh.2688","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/slh.2688","url":null,"abstract":"The Catholic-National CauldronThis letter is a response by Dominika Macocha to the discussion between Elżbieta Janicka, Konrad Matyjaszek, Xawery Stańczyk, Katrin Stoll and Anna Zawadzka about her video-sculptural installation work “50°31’29.7”N 22°46’39.1”E, 50°30’56.2”N 22°46’01.0”E, 50°30’41.0”N 22°45’49.5”E” published in Studia Litteraria et Historica 9 (2020). The discussion has enabled the artist to look at her work from a new perspective, to reflect on it in a critical way and to clarify central issues raised by the discussants. The letter is a testimony to the artist’s engagement with the local community which until today lives in the shadow of those Poles who, on their own initiative, murdered Jews during the Shoah. Macocha reveals the current efforts undertaken by several actors, among them the community of Bilgoraj, to cover up the historical fact of the murder of Jews carried out by members of the local population. In German academia and beyond, this “antiantifascist” current operates according to notions of communist contamination. To counter these narratives, I propose to look at the plurality of antifascism, its various continuities and the personal experiences of its historical agents. Niniejszy artykuł bada koncepcję świętości w noweli Preradović Die Versuchung des Columba. Święty Kolumban, bohater noweli, był irlandzkim opatem i misjonarzem. Dziś jest pamiętany jako katolicki święty i jeden z Dwunastu Apostołów Irlandii. Niniejsza analiza koncentruje się na charakterze Kolumbana, jego zachowaniu, działaniach, rozwoju oraz etapach psychologicznych, przez jakie przeszedł. Preradović tłumaczy swoją koncepcję świętości na przykładzie życia Kolumbana. Nie definiuje świętości jako nieomylności, ale przede wszystkim jako integralność i poczucie odpowiedzialności za bliźnich. Autorka opisuje ją jako cnotę, dzięki której wszystkie swoje czyny podporządkowuje się Bogu. Zalicza ją do natchnionych cnót moralnych.\u0000\u0000The Conception of Holiness in Paula von Preradović’s Novella Die Versuchung des Columba [The Temptation of Saint Columba]\u0000\u0000Paula von Preradović’s literary output consists mainly of poems, including the lyrics for the national anthem of Austria, Land der Berge, Land am Strome [Land of the mountains, land on the river] (1946/1947), but she also wrote several novellas, autobiographical sketches, small scenic works and journalistic texts, as well as one novel. This article investigates the conception of holiness in Preradović’s novella Die Versuchung des Columba. Saint Columba, the protagonist of the novella, was an Irish abbot and missionary. He is remembered today as a Catholic saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. The analysis focuses on the character of Columba, his behaviour, actions, development and the psychological stages he has gone through. Preradović explains her conception of holiness with the example of Columba’s life. She does not define holiness as infallibility, but primarily as integrity and a sense of responsibility for fellow men. The author describes it as that virtue by which one makes all one’s acts subservient to God. W tym kontekście znaczenie tańca w scenie balowej na początku Romea i Julii jawi się jako fascynujący materiał do przestudiowania pod kątem teatralnego potencjału tekstu tego dramatu. W analizowanej scenie muzyka i taniec pełnią funkcję symboliczną, której celem jest podkreślenie dramatycznej ironii realizowanej przez połączenie języka retoryki i choreografii z bogatym, sformalizowanym językiem poetyckim i sytuacją balową jako kluczowymi elementami fabuły. Takie połączenie otwiera wiele możliwych interpretacji teatralnych, a każda decyzja ma duży wpływ na znaczenie tego epizodu dramatu. W artykule scena balu została przeanalizowana z perspektywy literackiej, dramatycznej i historycznej. Realizację jej teatralnego potencjału ilustrują wybrane interpretacje sceniczne, które świadczą o kluczowej roli tej sceny w proponowaniu możliwych interpretacji całej tragedii.\u0000\u0000Dancing Words. Theatrical Potential of the Ball Scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Part II\u0000\u0000The function of dance in Shakespeare’s plays, as in all Renaissance culture, has its roots in the antiquity in which dance symbolized concord and harmony that reflected the cosmic movements of celestial bodies. In this context the significance of dance in the ball scene at the beginning of Romeo and Juliet presents itself as a fascinating material to be studied from the perspective of the theatrical potential of the dramatic text. In this scene, music and dance play a symbolical role the aim of which is to highlight the dramatic irony realized by the fusion of rhetorical language and choreography, with the rich formalized poetic language and the ball situation as the key elements of the plot. This fusion opens a range of possible theatrical interpretations, each decision having a major influence on the meaning of this episode. In the article the ball scene is analyzed from the literary, dramatic and historical perspective. A special consideration is given to ideological and cultural changes in Serbia in the 19th century. The author explains how the overthrow of the Turkish rule made it possible to initiate the process of creating of the modern Serbian state, nation and culture. The paper analyzes selected works of Serbian authors and activists: Dositej Obradović, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Svetozar Marković who contributed significantly to the success of the Serbian transformation in their cultural and ideological spheres. The article conludes that the Serbian Revolution created a model of political and social progress in the Balkans.\u0000\u0000W stronę nowoczesności – ideologiczne i kulturowe ramy „rewolucji serbskiej” w XIX wieku\u0000\u0000Artykuł analizuje powstania serbskie przeciw Turkom jako proces przejścia ku nowoczesności. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono ideologicznym i kulturowym zmianom w Serbii w XIX wieku. Autor wyjaśnia, jak obalenie władzy tureckiej umożliwiło zapoczątkowanie procesu tworzenia nowoczesnego serbskiego państwa, narodu i kultury. W tekście poddano analizie wybrane teksty serbskich autorów i działaczy: Dositeja Obradovicia, Vuka Stefanovicia Karadžicia i Svetozara Markovicia, którzy swoją działalnością w sferze przede wszystkim kulturalnej i ideowej znacznie przyczynili się do udanej z perspektywy czasu serbskiej transformacji.
