That data is increasingly collected in extractive and exploitative ways, which transfer value and power from individuals to AI system owners. Our research focuses on data that is collected from users of digital platforms, through direct and indirect interaction with those platforms, in ways that are not communicated to users, without consent or compensation. This paper presents our findings from a series of interviews and workshops in the Aotearoa New Zealand context to identify common themes and concerns from a variety of perspectives. Reframing this type of interaction as work or labour brings into view an otherwise unrecognised harm of using this data for training AI systems, and illustrates a new class of exploitative data practices that have become normalised in the digital age. We found that participants particularly emphasised moral or ethical justifications for intervention over financial or economic reasons to act.","PeriodicalId":308502,"journal":{"name":"Kōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128174616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We start by illustrating the role of taxation in erasing Indigenous sovereignty to first establish colonial authority, and then maintain this authority through an inequitable taxation system. We are motivated by emerging arguments around the importance for Indigenous practices and perspectives in governance, but without the proper resourcing to do so, Indigenous peoples rely on limited capacity and immeasurable amounts of unpaid labour. We thus explore how a colonial authority has resourced its authority, and erased Indigenous sovereignty, while exploring opportunities to resource Indigenous self-determination. This study merely scratches the surface of possibilities by mapping and mirroring sources of revenue generated by the Government of New Zealand and imagining how this revenue can either be shared through various means (incremental opportunities) or how Indigenous authorities can resource themselves through alternative means (progressive opportunities). In doing so we take the possibilities of a Te Tiriti-compliant taxation system seriously.","PeriodicalId":308502,"journal":{"name":"Kōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131103470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study revealed the four profiles of identity orientations: (1) strong levels of both ethnic and national identity (Integrated Identity); (2) strong ethnic and weak national identity (Separated Identity); (3) weak ethnic and strong national identity (Assimilated Identity); and (4) weak ethnic and weak national identity (Marginalised Identity). The separated identity orientation was slightly more prevalent among the Korean New Zealander sample, followed by integrated and marginalised identity orientations, with assimilation being the least common. Korean New Zealanders in the integrated identity profile reported the highest levels of subjective well-being, while those in the marginalised identity profile reported the lowest. The levels of subjective well-being between the separated and the assimilated identity profiles were similar. These findings underscore the importance of fostering a sense of belonging to the ethnic group and/or the host society as a booster to enhance life satisfaction and positive affect and also as a buffer against negative affect. This paper also discussed implications for New Zealand immigration policies, and future research directions.","PeriodicalId":308502,"journal":{"name":"Kōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127608450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

TSWs work with various racial, ethnic, and cultural groups and often in unfamiliar socio-political, policy and practice contexts. A qualitative study was undertaken in New Zealand, which involved six focus groups, three with managers of TSWs and three with TSWs themselves and a face-to-face semi-structured interview with a manager who was also a TSW. Coding and analysis of data were informed by critical realism (CR). We found that TSWs’ transitions are framed within an employer-employee relationship in the absence of a profession-wide response and TSWs encounter structural barriers in their transition. A suggestion has been made that the profession’s leadership acknowledge responsibility that attends to the transitional space and an emotional concern about the wellbeing of TSWs. The transnational nature of the profession demands greater accountability regarding inclusion, sustainability, safety and discrimination. It can positively impact on the overall wellbeing of TSWs and the client groups they serve.","PeriodicalId":308502,"journal":{"name":"Kōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124123408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
