Compared to vision-based recognition, methods based on data gloves, e.g., using IMU sensors, have several advantages in flexibility and responsiveness. The goal is to quickly and accurately recognize hand gestures while minimizing the number of employed sensors. There are, however, several challenges, both in the combination of hardware and software solutions and in gesture design and respective recognition algorithms. In this study, we explore the advantages of using data gloves in gaming with a minimum number of sensors per finger. We demonstrate that users wearing the data gloves can accurately control an actor in a video game in perceived real-time.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134429745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, ensuring pedestrians' safety and protecting personal privacy are crucial considerations in these environments. Smart city intersections and AI-powered traffic management systems will be essential for addressing these challenges. Therefore, our research focuses on creating an experimental framework for the design of applications that support the secure and efficient management of traffic intersections in urban areas. We integrated two cameras (street-level and bird's eye view), both viewing an intersection, and a programmable edge computing node, deployed within the COSMOS testbed in New York City, with a central management platform provided by Kentyou. We designed a pipeline to collect and analyze the video streams from both cameras and obtain real-time traffic/pedestrian-related information to support smart city applications. The obtained information from both cameras is merged, and the results are sent to a dedicated dashboard for real-time visualization and further assessment (e.g., accident prevention). The process does not require sending the raw videos in order to avoid violating pedestrians' privacy. In this demo, we present the designed video analytic pipelines and their integration with Kentyou central management platform.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133908498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Failing to adhere to a fitness and diet plan has been shown to cause long-term effects on a person's health including obesity and shortened lifespans. Currently, people plan their fitness and diet plans around their schedule, but these tasks are challenging to maintain. Users tend to give up these plans due to a lack of time and planning. To help with better planning for a fitness and diet regime, we propose, CHARLIE, a chatbot that works around a user's schedule to intelligently recommend diets and fitness goals based on their calendar. CHARLIE is a recommendation system that suggests the users' a certain meal and fitness activities based on the amount of time they have left in their day and the number of calories they lose.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131813285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first task in SCRM is risk identification. In this work, we focus on external risks by capturing relevant information about external occurrences such as political or environmental events, etc., which may negatively impact the supply chain operations. The timely identification of external risk events assists risk managers in deploying mitigation strategies to address such risks. One of the great resources for such identification is news. However, the large volume of news makes manual identification of the relevant news frustrating, time-consuming, and almost impossible. We have built a proactive risk identification system that automatically identifies and retrieves the most relevant news relying on advanced natural language processing (NLP), reinforcement learning (RL), and risk managers' feedback to address the abundance-of-news problem. We will demo the functionality of this system using informative scenarios.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127586699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our IoT-based soil monitoring solution targets precision agriculture use cases and promotes a sustainable use of water. It is a solution based on long-range, low-power communication technologies and off-the-shelf hardware that: i) is compliant with different sensing probes, and ii) has a protective enclosure allowing underground operation and further protection from theft, machinery damage and harsh environment conditions. This demo paper presents our prototype based on the LoRa/LoRaWAN and NB-IoT technologies. Preliminary tests show that our prototype is water resistant and can communicate up to 1.7km while buried 10cm underground.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131144787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The past years have seen the machine learning community strive to achieve best practices in dataset creation for various applications. This contribution is the first to provide a comprehensive tutorial on data creation for sensor-based human activity recognition with firsthand instructions. We introduce the dataset creation process consisting of three phases as a guideline for the community. Each phase explains common challenges researchers may face and suggest solutions. A case study demonstrates how the framework can be used by researchers for holistically planning and critically reflecting their approach of dataset creation.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132826300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our main contribution is an extensive literature review where we discuss how emotions could influence different stages of annotation tasks. The results of our literature review show that the nature of the data itself might be crucial to how the emotional state of annotators is affected, but also that the process is affected by other factors such as initial motivation, time pressure, repetitiveness, emotional reaction to particular words/scenes, and demographic background of annotators. In addition to the literature review we formulate several hypotheses connected with the effects of emotions on the overall annotation process and propose an experiment with the help of which these hypotheses could be studied.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133149490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to this current situation, mental health sensing has been attracting attention in recent years. However, no attention has been focused on indicators such as recovery from damage, engagement for work, and reattachment to work. In addition, the new tele-work style caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for companies and universities to recognize the mental state of employees and students. Therefore, in this study, we propose a system that estimates these mental indicators without depending on the location by using a smartphone application. Specifically, the user turns his face to the smartphone for 10 seconds before and after work, and collects the eyelid opening degree and eyelid color information from the obtained face video. Based on these features, our system estimates four indexes for two recoveries, one work engagement, and one attachment. To evaluate the proposed method, we collected realistic facial data using the smartphone application from eight subjects every day over two weeks. We found that the estimation model constructed by Random Forest achieves an accuracy of more than 0.90 in f-score for work engagement and reattachment, with leave-one-person out cross-validation.","PeriodicalId":307197,"journal":{"name":"2023 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops and other Affiliated Events (PerCom Workshops)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115728906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
