However, while highlighting the singularity of the epitaph, scholars have neglected to relate it to its context: thousands of funeral inscriptions from Asia Minor. Comparing musical notation inscribed on stone to similarly documented phenomena such as mathematical proofs or philosophical essays allows a redefinition of the epitaph’s role in its broader cultural context. The intaglio, made of lapis lazuli, is a ring stone and depicts the so-called Pantheos or Polymorphic Deity . Following a description of the iconography, a history of research on the interpretation of this deity is presented. An interpretation of the Greek texts on the obverse and reverse of the intaglio is then offered, assisted by a review of comparanda. Morelli","doi":"10.15661/TYCHE.2017.032.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15661/TYCHE.2017.032.11","url":null,"abstract":"This document is a demand note for providing a shipwright and his rations sent by Appa Kyros to the inhabitants of the village of Poinami in the Heracleopolite nome. According to Karabacek, it belongs to the archive of the Heracleopolitan pagarchs Appa Kyros and sons, Christophoros and Theodorakios, from the early years after the Arab conquest of Egypt. This attribution implies for our papyrus a date to the year 638: one year earlier than the regularly accepted date for the beginning of the conquest and thus, according to Karabacek, still falling into the Byzantine period. However, the composition of the rations shows that the carpenter of our text must have worked in the service of the Arab administration. By discussing the chronology of the documents of the said archive, I try to answer the question of whether we have to anticipate the date of the conquest, or whether the papyrus has to be dated to a later period. The fragment of a bronze cauldron shows a bustrophedon inscription in Elean dialect to be dated to the middle of the 6. cent. B.C. Its text is a regulation („wratra“ = rhetra) of the festival of Kronos („Kronika“): a cult official (the „theokolos“) has to sacrifice in the five days of the festival, except in time of the „Olympiad“. At Olympia Kronos had an altar in the Altis, another one at the top of the hill of Kronos, named after this cult place. In archaic times there was presumably an annual five-day festival for Kronos, which every four years was celebrated together with the five-day Olympic festival for Kronos’s son Zeus.
