The IT unit, under Global CIO Karl Landert, assumed a pivotal role in enabling business integration. But the IT unit had developed distinctive cultures and capabilities reflecting two very different business units — private banking and investment banking — and different geographies. To help understand and develop the skills needed to support business integration, Credit Suisse’s IT unit developed clearly defined job families and career paths for its 8,000 IT professionals and 4,000 contractors. This case examines the transformation of the IT unit as it implemented its job families and defined IT roles that would help Credit Suisse become a global financial services business.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114900800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To have an effective communication with the customer it is a must to understand them and their media consumption pattern. Today’s youth is the most complicated target segment in the market because of their exposure to a variety of media, low attention span, unconventional norms & wide interests. To complicate the situation they have the power to escape...they can escape ads, they can tune to a million other channels, they can buy a billion other products, they can publish a blog about a brand, they can have instant word-of-mouth (good and bad) on it from the web, they can be in a store and punch in product information on their cell phone and find out who else has the product and for how much.Belch & Belch(2006) suggested that the basic task involved in the development of media strategy is to determine the best matching of media to the target market, given the constraint of the budget. The media planner attempts to balance reach & frequency and deliver the message to the intended audience with a minimum waste of coverage.A research to study media consumption pattern can prove to be very useful in designing media strategy to have an effective communication with the target customer.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"166 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128836282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies have significantly contributed to a better understanding of strategic planning. However, there is a limited research in less developed countries like Greece and under-researched industrial sectors like the hospitality industry. This paper tries to give some insight into the nature and extent of use of strategic planning processes and its positive outcomes in the Greek hospitality industry through a study based on a sample of 21 Greek five-star hotels.Findings: The main findings of the paper concern with some major strategic planning dimensions: planning formality, functional coverage, internal and external orientation, centralization and time horizon of planning. Additionally, the study highlights the positive outcomes/benefits of planning according to managers’ views, as well as the financial performance of the Greek five-star hotels that are examined. Descriptive results are presented and the respondents’ individual characteristics are outlined. Finally, the study provides a benchmark for the measurement of strategic planning in the Greek hospitality industry.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129749696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is wide divergence in the extent to which firms are considered to be forward-looking in setting strategy in such a context. I focus on the effect of differences in two aspects of forward-looking strategy setting, foresight and myopia, in a formal model of how firms within an industry respond to a shock that leads to a long-run transition in the industry. I consider exogenous shocks to ease of resource accumulation over time, but initial firm heterogeneity and competitive interactions leads to a more complex, involved transition, from initial response through to long-run changes, due to the potentially different endogenous response of firms to the shocks. I find distinctive investment, entry and exit patterns that depend on the extent of foresight and myopia. Thus, from the perspective of a focal firm the choice of strategy is affected by other firm's foresight and myopia, as these shape the other firm's response to a shock and thus the competitive landscape faced by the focal firm.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"306 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123623498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also studied in disciplines such as organization theory, operations research, economics, linguistics, and psychology. Malone & Crowston (1994) studied the similarities and connections between the different flavors of coordination and created a more generic coordination theory. They define coordination as managing dependencies between activities. This definition is based on the intuitive idea that there is nothing to coordinate without any interdependence. In their work they state that coordination theories should try to characterize different kinds of dependencies and identify the coordination processes that can be used to manage them. Therefore, in the next section (see Section 2), we will discuss several types of dependencies that can exist when composing services to service-based systems. In the rest of this research report is targeted at two types of dependencies, namely sequence dependencies and data dependencies. Therefore, the research continues in Sections 3 and 4 with an overview of existing techniques for managing sequence and data dependencies, respectively. In each section there is also a general conclusion included.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128648372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the paper is to describe key supply chain issues faced in Asia. These issues are related to supply chain security that forces Asian firms to comply with numerous requirements as well as the importance of a properly managed supply chain in enhancing firms' competitiveness. The critical role played by Asian based logistics providers in facilitating supply chain integration is explored. Logistics providers must be able to design effective and efficient supply chains for the clients. A case study is presented to illustrate how supply chain dynamics affects supplier selection. Particularly service specific challenges have been hitherto unaddressed. These characteristics affect the requirements towards the service design as well as the appropriate education of service employees. One key challenge for service mass customization is to translate information about consumer preferences gained through market research into a format that can be easily used for service modularization decisions and customer-contact personnel training. As solution to this “translation problem” we propose “personas” as a tool for transferring complex market research data into narrative descriptions of archetype customers. Such archetypes convey customization needs in a way that makes it easy for decision makers and employees to understand and to communicate effectively with each other. Along with the concept we introduce a structured approach for developing and using personas in service mass customization projects and provide managerial implications as well as an outlook for further research.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116629887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, researchers have studied factors presumed to affect the sustained success of family businesses. Among these factors, conflict has been identified as a factor of great concern and a number of studies have attempted to identify the causes of conflict in family businesses and to propose strategies for managing such conflict. After reviewing such studies, I transfer the Faultline Model from the organizational behavior field in an effort to provide a more sophisticated analysis of conflict in family businesses. After summarizing the faultline model, I apply the model to three family business scenarios, identify the level of conflict likely to ensue in each scenario, and identify strategies based on the faultline model for resolving conflicts in such scenarios.","PeriodicalId":307004,"journal":{"name":"ERN: Theory & Evidence on Process (Topic)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115001617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
