How salient today are the core concerns that shaped this tradition? What are the emergent themes in contemporary critical media studies? While critical political economy’s attention to the way media industries are organized and financed has become a more central consideration across the field of media and communication studies, this mainstreaming has been accompanied by disconnection from the critical political economy tradition. Taking a feminist critical standpoint, we move away from an affirmative reading of LYB discourses and instead understand them as a postfeminist articulation of sexism. Our analysis identifies the key motifs of LYB discourses and contextualizes their dramatic proliferation over the last decade. Situated at the historical convergence of neoliberal governmentality, emotional capitalism, the growth of social media and commodity feminism, we trace how LYB discourses have emerged within the advertising genre to quickly saturate media more broadly. The article concludes with a critical assessment of LYB discourses that seeks to flesh out its distinctive contradictions and its ideological workings. Titled ‘The Inheritance of Loss’, the novel \u0000maps out the intertwining lives of a young Indian girl Sai, her grandfather, \u0000and her Nepalese lover, set against the backdrop of the ‘messy map’ of Indian \u0000borders merging with the borders of Bhutan, high up in the Himalayan mountains. \u0000The protagonists then move negotiating race, class and ethnicity as the \u0000messy map – of borders and identities – begins to involve Cambridge, and \u0000the rest of England. What resonated with me the most was the protagonist \u0000Sai’s realization that, in order to make sense of the messy map of her past, \u0000her present and indeed – her inheritance that shapes who she is –‘Never again \u0000could she think there was but one narrative and that this narrative belonged only to \u0000herself, that she might create her own tiny happiness and live safely within it.’ \u0000So, borrowing from Sai’s realization about multiple narratives, in this article \u0000I will write, as an ‘early career academic’, of my experiences of entering a \u0000field of audience research where many proclaimed it dead to begin with, and \u0000I began, in all earnest – to prove that indeed, audience research wasn’t dead, \u0000that there was much to do, that there is a particular narrative of the field that \u0000everybody must surely note and value and draw from, and most importantly – \u0000that I had an identity. I was an audience researcher.
