To support the ongoing efforts in efficiently dealing with this issue we leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) sensing capabilities and develop an original synchronisation method to efficiently adapt traffic light phases in a way that significantly reduce urban road traffic congestion. We particularly focus on reducing congestion in city centres during afternoon peak hours where most drivers travel using arterial roads to exit the city centre to reach their homes. We achieved this by designing a novel Traffic Lights Controller (TLC) synchronization system that allows vehicles leaving the city centre to travel a long distance without stopping (i.e., minimizing the number of occurrence of ’stop and go’ phenomenon). The performance evaluation results of our method using the microscopic road traffic simulator SUMO reveal that it achieves a reduction of up to 39% in the average travel time compared to non-synchronized fixed time TLCs.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116489878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lack of awareness, ignorance and unwillingness to participate in clinical test are identified as the major causes for the high growth rate of cervical cancer. In point of view it is understood that cervical cancer is curable at its early stage. The screening programs in women are simple through MobileODT diagnosis approach. It can be achieved through creating awareness in women in both rural and urban areas which help them to process for further treatment. Therefore, a significant effort is proposed for creating awareness and to develop a web model for supporting women in preventing and saving them from cervical cancer. A web portal is developed where the patient and doctors will be provided authentication access. It consists of Patient clinical summary and Doctor’s Evaluation in which the original cervix screened image through MobileODT and the result obtained and examined will be displayed. In the denonising process proposed image analysis model, filter like average filter and median filter are applied for denonising process. This helps the doctors to analyses the screened image effectively in the final analysis. Patient Clinical summary will consist of the patient demographic report and Physician advice for the screened image that helps the doctors and patient to interact with each other and bring out the significance of cervical cancer and also help to take effective treatment for cervical cancer at the initial stage itself.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129464022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mexico not only is the eleventh most populated country in the world, but also has a higher urbanization rate than the global average. By 2010, seventy eight percent of inhabitants lived in cities; where the challenges of distributing resources to maintain a good quality of life still exist. Approximately eighty million Mexicans experience a lack of water provisioning for at least a month and twenty million citizens continue with severe shortages during more than half a year. Guadalajara is the second biggest city in Mexico and it has launched macro projects that have not met expectations. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a scalable solution, transforming traditional practices into Smart Cities ones. This analysis considers a circular economy model using information technologies to simulate the wastewater flows at the Living Lab of a University of Guadalajara Campus and evaluate the efficiency rate of two scenarios with a virtual bioreactor in comparison with published data of an existing treatment plant in Mexico City.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132953371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the adoption of latest and advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), smart campuses aim to provide timely services and reduce operational costs and time. The IoT brings connectivity to about every objects found in the physical space ranging from connected fridges and cars to cities. The technologies and systems in a smart environment represent knowledge in different ways and languages, thus leading to interoperability problems. To ensure a common understanding of the meaning of the content (information) being exchanged by the systems, formal ways are required to express system requirements and capabilities. This makes semantic interoperability a challenging research problem to support seamless and heterogeneous communications in IoT. The paper therefore aims to resolve semantic interoperability by identifying issues and requirements for a semantic model in an IoT-enabled smart campus.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126512879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are some disadvantages of this centralized system, especially in the workflow of official documents that involve more than one organizational unit. i.e. dependence on third parties which is the sole authority of the official documents data management. If there is a system failure there is a certain period of time, it will increase the activity cycle time and decrease activity time efficiency in the official documents business process. The blockchain-based solution described in this paper is to avoid the occurrence of delay times during the activity cycle time in business processes when a system failure occurs which can cause a decrease in activity time efficiency. Blockchain makes the official documents system become “Trusless Operation” with each participant of different organizational unit having a copy of transaction data through a consensus mechanism. The simulation results show that our system can reduce time delay in activity cycle time during a system failure as long as the number of faulty peers within the tolerance limit so that it can increase the activity time efficiency.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126597039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy management problem of these communicating autonomous nodes is a major handicap especially for countries with limited financial resources. Indeed, the lifespan of this type of network is that of a few nodes. In this article, we propose the use of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology to optimize energy consumption in these nodes. In our approach, establishment and maintenance of path is provided by a controller. Nodes focus on packet switching. This approach is implemented in the well known reactive routing protocol, Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV). Analysis of performances of this new protocol, SDN based AODV (S-AODV), that we propose, shows that, comparing with the standard AODV, we significantly improve nodes energy consumption and thus the lifespan of these types of networks, routing load and path establishment delay.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115813950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, smart city applications are concerned about how data and services can be safely stored and shared. In this regard, this article investigates the use of blockchain and pinpoints a set of essential requirements to meet the needs of blockchain for the context of smart cities. Base on that, we propose a platform, named Orthus, to support the use of blockchain in smart city initiatives. We have demonstrated how to use the proposed platform in the context of the Natal Smart City Initiative, in Brazil, to handle land registration. Finally, we compare this platform with other implementations that use blockchain in different domains.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132930276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of the proposed eco-routing system and its impact on travel time (TT), vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT), greenhouse gas (GHG), and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions are analyzed on Downtown Toronto network in an agent-based traffic simulation platform. A comparison between estimation approaches of TT based on two levels of spatial and temporal resolution is applied. The results showed that routing to optimize TT while adopting higher level of spatial and temporal resolution is the best among the single objective routing scenarios. Multi-objective routing strategies further reduced TT, GHG, and NOx when comparing to routing solely based on TT. Estimation approach based on a higher level of disaggregation produced substantially better results due to its ability to capture traffic characteristics more efficiently.","PeriodicalId":306836,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134206281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
