Picking up on pre-existing typologies in the UK, a total of eight distinct character types are identified in our 2020 sample, including the Golden Ager, Perfect Grandparent, Mentor or Legacy, Comedic, Coper, Celebrity Endorser, Happy Couple, and Jane or Joe Public. The study concludes that the observed broadening of character types reflects a reduction in ageist views within UK advertising, and that recurring themes of, for example, romance are starting to break with long-standing ageist taboos.","PeriodicalId":306631,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Aging and Social Change","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121068332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Paoletti, Simona Hvalič Touzery","doi":"10.18848/2576-5310/cgp/v10i02/53-73","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18848/2576-5310/cgp/v10i02/53-73","url":null,"abstract":"In response to the global increasing age of the population, there is general agreement on the need to define what is meant by 'old.' Yet there is no consensus on age groups within the definition of old, which makes comparative studies of people of differing ages in advancing years impossible. Attempts to sub-categorize the 'old' also show little consensus. This article serves to open a dialogue, as an illustrative example of these inconsistencies. Specifically, the aim of this research was to examine definitions of the 'oldest old' and 'fourth age', in order to highlight such inconsistencies and the need for consistent age stratifications. The authors conducted a literature search from January 2003 to April 2015 using the six most highly-rated non-medical journals in gerontology; the search was conducted again in 2018–2019 for currency. Forty-nine articles in total were reviewed. The findings show little consensus on the age stratifications used to define the 'oldest old' and 'fourth age,' which ranged from seventy-five plus to ninety-two plus years. Dividing the 'old' population into the oldest old and/or fourth age still shows a lack of consensus, with some authors suggesting that such divisions have only served to move ageism into very old age. There are terms for ten-year cohorts, which - if universally used - will mean that comparative ageing studies are possible. This in turn will inform international and national strategy documents, policy initiatives, clinical guidelines, and service provision and design. Given the growth in the numbers of people classed as old and the time span being 'old' covers, there is a real need for consensus. Definite age groupings that define people as cohorts, with existing and agreed words — such as sexagenarians (60–69,) septuagenarians (70–79), octogenarians (80–89), etc. - will completely remove the need for the value-laden term 'old' (and all its derivatives) for this poorly-defined population.","PeriodicalId":306631,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Aging and Social Change","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122611910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The built environment, and housing in particular, plays a crucial role in supporting older people to age in place. However, in the advent of improving life expectancy in China, an increasing number of older people are grappling with the hard choice between remaining in inadequate housing or moving to institutionalized settings. This article explores the role of housing design in achieving aging in place in the Chinese context. It first reviews research underpinning aging in place and age–friendly environments to understand their development and conceptualization globally and in China. In China, the increasing proportion of older people, over 65 years and over 85 years, is presenting a pressing need to focus on finding solutions that help older people to age well in their own homes, thus allowing older people to remain independent, and alleviating the increasing demand on the health and social care systems. Three focus groups were conducted in Beijing to explore aging in place by focusing on the following domains: accessibility, sensory, and cognitive. The aim was to engage with a diverse profile of participants to gain a robust cross-sectional understanding of their levels of awareness, needs, and the day–to–day challenges they face when navigating the built environment. This study emphasizes the importance of the Chinese context in understanding aging in place given the changing demographics, rapid urbanisation, cultural differences, and varying social trends. The findings from the focus groups offer lessons for international thinking on aging in place and provide an insight into the special considerations required to design barrier–free, comfortable environments to encourage better health, safety, independence, and a sense of community in China.","PeriodicalId":306631,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of Aging and Social Change","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125589353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
