However, staff have faced barriers in using these effectively for person-centred care due to the demanding and busy nature of the ward environment. It has also been challenging for new, bank, and agency staff to find time to read about and understand the person living with dementia, leading to escalation in situations which could have been avoided. In collaboration with nursing staff, the psychology team developed support plan flash cards that serve the purpose of being a ‘grab and go’ style resource. These are targeted at individuals with more complex presentations and used during handovers and when staff are on one-to-one observations, providing a useful snippet of information about the person living with dementia. The psychology team also developed a wellbeing support plan for staff, with tips for keeping well and supporting their own mental health and wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"18 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139891224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses a mixed methods design to understand the use and development of the Welsh language within therapeutic services. 113 staff members from the psychology, counselling, and arts therapies service in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board completed a survey, exploring participants’ proficiency and confidence using the Welsh language, and their perspectives of the Welsh language within their respective services. Preliminary findings displayed a range of Welsh language proficiencies, from fluency to non-proficiency. Participants reported a lack of confidence in utilising the language, and resources, in their work. Qualitative findings further explicate the need to encourage development of proficiency by providing time for learning work-related skills and networking with other Welsh speakers. The findings illustrate a need to recognise language diversity and to understand the needs and development of multilingual practice within the therapeutic context.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"3 11‐12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139816576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this transition left many older adults without the necessary equipment and unfamiliar with digital platforms, resulting in digital exclusion. To bridge this gap, our older people’s mental health service loaned mobile SIM-enabled tablets, adapted for ease of use, to those lacking internet access. With comprehensive training and support, even individuals with no prior experience successfully engaged with the devices, challenging ageist beliefs. As information technology becomes the new norm for health services, it is essential to equip, adapt, train, and support older people to counter digital exclusion.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125110988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While much of the focus within older peoples’ multidisciplinary teams (MDT) and training initiatives in Scotland are on memory and dementia, there is a need to consider the changing demand which may come from older people who are increasingly socialised to seeking support with mood difficulties.A Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) informed programme was co-developed with multidisciplinary colleagues with the aim of developing a sustainable and ongoing infrastructure that would increase the competence and confidence of attendees in delivering psychologically informed care for older people experiencing common mood difficulties (anxiety and depression).A one-day teaching session with six-weekly coaching groups was delivered. Outcome measures related to engagement and ‘benefit’; measured via a vignette assessing competence in CBT-based knowledge and skills and via subjective confidence ratings on CBT-based competencies. Acceptability and feasibility was tested via a pilot in 2018; and has subsequently ran in its present form since 2019.From 2019 to 2022, programme attendees have almost doubled and average coaching group attendance has increased from 30 per cent to 58 per cent. Competence and confidence scores have similarly increased. Qualitative feedback reflects patient-centred benefits including an increase in goal-focused interventions, collaborative working and formulation-based (rather than diagnosis-led) discussions during MDT meetings.The programme outcomes indicate MDT acceptability and effectiveness. A model of teaching and follow-up coaching allows for ongoing knowledge and skill development and is believed to be an effective model for facilitating application of knowledge and skills to practice. Within the local health board, the programme has contributed to an infrastructure for psychologically informed care, increased knowledge of therapies for older people and provided a governance framework which is workable for an older adult psychology service to sustain. A key reflection has been the importance of modelling the CBT approach throughout the programme.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"31 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125701843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It analyses how cultural competency, stigma, and immigration affect these populations’ experiences with mental health and draws attention to the obstacles they encounter in getting access to appropriate mental health care. The paper highlights the significance of increasing diversity, the demand for linguistic accessibility, culturally acceptable services, and awareness and education-raising campaigns. To address these issues, it makes recommendations for techniques including specialised resources, language assistance, professional cultural competency training, and community-based interventions. The needs of South Asian older adults can be better met by the mental health system by encouraging inclusivity and empathy to improve their overall wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123957079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Elements of standard CBT for health anxiety and psychoeducation techniques were employed. A collaborative case formulation adapted for older clients, comprising two models were developed and used as a roadmap for intervention. Psychometric assessment was conducted across six-time points alongside a narrative assessment of the client’s mental health needs. A detailed description of the case is presented, including an outline of the treatment and set of interventions employed, informed by the formulation. This case study calls for a nuanced understanding of health anxiety and highlights the importance of considering trauma and individualised approaches in clinical practice.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124008232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A football reminiscence group was set up on a dementia unit to see if the benefits reflected those in the literature. The groups ran once a week for 30–45 minutes and comprised of 11 weekly sessions. Each session involved a specific football related topic and was set up to be as inclusive as possible with a dependable structure. The data collected suggests the football reminiscence group was a successful and valued intervention. The group was designed to be as inclusive as possible which allowed participation from patients with moderate to severe dementia. It is hoped the success of this group can be replicated in the future and will continue to improve the wellbeing of people living with dementia in hospital.","PeriodicalId":306496,"journal":{"name":"FPOP Bulletin: Psychology of Older People","volume":"149 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130138159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
