We first introduce a distributed recursive algorithm to estimate the sensitivity parameters of the network without needing any information exchange between the edge computing devices. Then, we cast the distributed voltage control problem as a distributed linear program which can be solved efficiently on edge computing devices to minimally adjust DGs generations. The algorithm is tested with EPRI Test Ckt24 and the results are compared with the situation when data exchange is available between the edge devices.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123803778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transformers have complex insulation system and assessing condition of the insulation system for defects like partial discharges, hot spots, ingress of moisture due to loosening of gaskets etc., is very essential. Condition monitoring techniques such as off-line and/or on-line are adopted to assess the condition of insulation system. This paper presents the in-situ findings of the periodic condition monitoring of 220kV class transformers in a power generation station in India. Acoustic emission technique which is one of the on-line test tools for periodic condition monitoring and also to study the relative performance by carrying out the test over different years, is used in this paper. Recovery voltage measurement is an off-line test being used to assess the moisture content in the paper-oil insulation system of the transformer. The results obtained with on-line acoustic emission measurements using acoustic emission technique were found to be comparative in terms of their respective magnitude with the results obtained with off-line Recovery Voltage Measurement (RVM) test.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133188830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The manuscript proposes an enhanced LVRT control capability of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind power plant (WPP). To accomplish it, the rotor side converter (RSC) controller of the DFIG is provided with adaptive reactive current to voltage (IQ-V) characteristics and the WPP controller provides different reference voltage to each DFIG, relying on their rotor voltage margins (RVM). Thus, the DFIGs in a WPP injects different amount of reactive power into the grid to prop up voltage at point of interconnection (POI). To survive the DFIG during a fault, the reference electromagnetic torque in the RSC of the DFIGs is decreased proportionate to the weighting factor and voltage sags at the terminals of the DFIGs intending to monitor the voltage rise across the capacitor of the DC-link. The proposed method is tested for 120 MVA WPP consisting of twenty 6-MVA DFIGs. The results validate the ability of the proposed method to produce additional reactive power in comparison to the conventional method to contribute to the POI voltage and regulate voltage rise in DC-link of the DFIGs during a grid disturbance.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132230440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Renewables provides access to clean energy quickly with lower cost and stable energy prices, with increase in reliability and resiliency. The integration of RES to the utility grid raises more fascinating challenges in integration, operation and control, protection as numerous components (power electronic converters) and constraints are involved. Grid codes are the enablers of the energy transition era, also plays an important role in defining the boundary between the requirements of secure grid operation and receiving highest possible share of RES to achieve the cost efficient energy mix. In this paper we investigated the requirements to connect the Renewable Energy Sources plants to the utility grid considering different grid codes and international standards. A renewable plant controller is proposed at plant level in order to make renewable plants to compliant to the connected grid code standards. The DIGSILENT power factory software is used to model and simulate the operation of renewable power plants, along with Battery Energy Storage System. The simulation model is analyzed with different operating conditions of power grid, to validate the compliance of renewable plant controller. In addition overview of the various international standards are provided, focusing on operational and control requirements demanded to grid connected Renewable Energy Sources plants.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116465126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scheduling of electricity production from power producers in Uganda is carried out by considering only the type of generation plants available to ensure demand-supply balance and that the power system remains stable. There is need to develop a generation scheduling procedure that not only maintains the power system in equilibrium but also maximizes utilization of available plants, minimizes both electricity production and transmission costs while reducing bulk network constraints. This paper presents an alternative generation scheduling protocol, applied to the 132kV bulk network of Uganda. The protocol starts with a short-term load forecast to establish the demand. Optimum hourly power plant outputs were determined by solving a four-plant optimal power flow problem whose objective function is an aggregation of generator cost functions subjected to active grid constraints in MatLab-PSAT. Assessment of scheduling results revealed significant reduction in cost of generating and transmitting bulk power attributed to improved plant utilization. The bulk network performance was enhanced as exhibited by improved node voltage regulation, reduction in bulk network loss and improved transmission capacity usage as per load flow analysis results obtained using DIgSILENT Power Factory software 15.1.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123061542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current harmonics for such types of loads may not necessarily be below the prescribed value of 5% according to the IEEE-519 grid code. Harmonic compensation required for such types of nonlinear loads may be achieved with the help of compensators such as shunt active power filter (SAPF). Generally SAPF is connected at the point of common coupling (PCC) between the gird and the PVDG system for harmonic compensation. But, such a system leads to an increase in the cost as well as complexity of the overall system. In this paper, the shunt APF has been integrated with the inverter for compensation of current harmonics for the nonlinear load. The inverter is controlled with the help of a reference current that has been generated using the widely acknowledged instantaneous reactive power theory. The switching pulse to the inverter will be given in such a manner that the inverter will generate the current harmonics required by the load. The objective is to integrate power quality enhancement technique in the Photovoltaic inverter so that it does not require an additional active power filter in the point of common coupling for power quality improvement. Also the inverter can be used to supply power to grid.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130105196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This variability needs to be assessed to design appropriate mechanisms to mitigate it. This paper discusses a framework to decompose imbalances introduced due to intra-dispatch interval variability into two components, considering the causes due to which they manifest. The framework is applied to actual field data of daily solar generation profiles for a year of 1- min resolution. Studies suggests that relatively slower component can be identified from the noisy fluctuations and should be handled separately so that the burden of the frequency regulation services will be relieved.","PeriodicalId":306418,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE International Conference on Power Systems Technology (POWERCON)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131389621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
