While most STEGHs are conducted by teams of clinical practitioners and/or trainees, there are some organizations in which nonclinical family members of medical/surgical volunteers participate. One World Surgery is an example of an organization that encourages family member participation in its short-term volunteer trips to Honduras. Through careful pretrip orientation, on-site supervision, and consistent educational programs, One World Surgery has developed a program which promotes safe and effective participation of family members. A recent survey of preprofessional volunteers confirmed that participants felt appropriately supervised and well prepared for their STEGH duties; as a testament to their experience, 100% of these volunteers indicated they would like to return for another One World Surgery experience. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the benefits of family member participation in STEGHs and share the experience of one organization in which family member participation has been developed to provide ethical, beneficial, and sustainable care.","PeriodicalId":306111,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Surgery: Global Health","volume":"7 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138975045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A specialized health camp focuses on a certain group of people for detailed workup and hence better results. Such specialized health camps have not been conducted for orthopedics in Nepal yet. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted from 2016 to 2019. Data recorded on a proforma were stored on an Excel spreadsheet and later analyzed using SPSS 16.0. Chief complaints and other relevant demographic data were analyzed. Results: A total of 1554 patients were seen with a mean age group of 49.9 years. The most common complaints were knee pain 544 (35.00%) followed by back pain 513 (33.01%). Conclusion: A specialized health camp is beneficial to a community as it results in early diagnosis and prompt management of a disease. It also leads to increased awareness among people belonging to a rural community.","PeriodicalId":306111,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Surgery: Global Health","volume":"2 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138971633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measles, also known as rubeola, is transmitted through close contact with an infected person or via airborne particles. It is a vaccine-preventable disease and is more common in children under the age of 5. The clinical signs usually appear after 9 – 19 days, and the typical symptoms are fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, and Koplik ’ s spots on the buccal cavity [1] . It is among the top causes of death for children under the age of 5 in African countries [2] . Fighting measles is a serious public health concern for developing countries, including Ethiopia. There is an increase in the number of measles cases in Ethiopia, which is an alarming situation for the public health sector [3] . Despite the availability of vaccines, communities are vulnerable to measles outbreaks. We are writing this article to address the challenges that hinder vaccination progress in Ethiopia. Our aim through this correspondence is to critically analyze the problems related to vaccine programs and provide recommendations so that children in Ethiopia can receive measles vaccination and lead a healthy life.","PeriodicalId":306111,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Surgery: Global Health","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138591067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
