Challenges include the lack of senior researchers to act as mentors to younger academics in undertaking research supervision thus affecting effective and successful supervision of students; the difficulties in retaining students in postgraduate degrees given their high employability and competitive salaries offered by industry, and the need for consistent assessment of doctoral degrees given that the home faculty and assessment criteria across faculties may differ. Apart from highlighting these challenges, the paper seeks to re-think the present approaches in the supervision process for a doctoral degree in Statistics in South Africa. A novel solution is proposed through the construction and use of a guiding rubric to steer doctoral supervision and a research network in the discipline towards a position of strength.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83581598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, I wish to disagree with the statement that there is a “crisis” in Statistics in light of the increasing demand for statisticians, arising from the emergence of Data Science and more generally from Industry requiring “analytics”/Operations Research to help improve its processes; see [1]. Rather, it presents an opportunity for Statistics. It is not long ago that Statistics was not well known, and statisticians were mostly employed in academia or in government statistical services. As a result, Statistics was generally not seen by students as a career to focus on, and registration numbers were low.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"129 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85757284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many real-world problems require addressing more than oneobjective that are in conflict, as well as taking into consideration a number of practical restrictionsor constraints. The multi-objective optimisation using the cross-entropy method (MOOCEM) algorithm is one of many algorithms that addresses the need to solve multi-objectiveproblems effectively, but it has a number of limitations. This paper explores methods ofenhancing the MOO CEM algorithm in order to improve the efficiency and increase the functionalityof the algorithm, allowing for it to be applied to additional classes of problems.Three possible methods of enhancement were identified: using the beta distribution to improvesampling, adding functionality to solve constrained problems and, lastly, implementinga non-dominated sorting algorithm to solve problems with more than two objectives. Thenew algorithms incorporating these enhancements were developed and tested on benchmarkproblems. Subsequently, the results were analysed using standard performance indicatorsand compared to results produced by the original MOO CEM algorithm. The findings of thisstudy indicate that using the beta distribution improves sampling and therefore algorithmefficiency. Methods of handling constraints and solving problems with an increased numberof objectives were implemented successfully. Based on these results, a final algorithmimplementing the enhancements is presented.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72510295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, given the expeditious change in the data environment, it is evident that the product targeting formulation cited throughout the literature has not yet been updated to align with the realistic modeling dynamics required by financial institutions. In this paper, an enhanced product targeting formulation is proposed that incorporates a large set of new modeling constraints and input parameters to try and maximise the economic profit generated by a financial institution. The proposed formulation ensures that the correct product is offered to the desired customers at the best time of day through their preferred communication medium. To solve the foregoing product targeting formulation, a novel column generation approach is presented that is capable of reducing problem complexity and in turn allowing for significantly larger problems to be solved to global optimality within a reasonable time frame.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85078158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modelling the effect of political propaganda on a voting population has become more prevalent in opinion dynamics research, which has become further enabled by the applications of computer simulation and data analysis. In this study we explore the effect of propaganda on a voting population. The agent-based model describes a population of voter agents who hold a political opinion using knowledge and emotion as their control variables. These variables are updated through agent interactions and political propaganda. The model is based on the emotion/information/opinion (E/I/O) approach which is applied to a grid-based and network population. Furthermore, the network is programmed to be partially dynamic, in that connections between disagreeing agents can be severed under certain conditions concerning the intimacy of agent relationships. This is performed with the intention of adding more flexibility to the model, whilst making it a more realistic representation of reality. The different network types are shown to produce varying proportions of metastable agent states from identical starting conditions, which can be used to represent real political situations and predict future change.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"194 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72866197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However as the search for competitive advantage and production growth continues, there is a growing consciousness towards environmental preservation. With this consideration in mind this research investigates and applies Value Stream Mapping (VSM) techniques to aid in reducing environmental impacts of manufacturing companies. The research is based on empirical observation within the Chassis weld plant of Company X. The observation focuses on the weld operations and utilizes the cross member line of Auxiliary Cross as a point of study. Using various measuring instruments to capture the emissions emitted by the weld and service equipment, data is collected. The data is thereafter visualised via an Environmental Value Stream Map (EVSM) using a 7-step method. It was found that the total lead-time to build an Auxiliary Cross equates to 16.70 minutes and during this process is emitted. It was additionally found that the UPR x LWR stage of the process indicated both the highest cycle time and carbon emissions emitted and provides a starting point for investigation on emission reduction activity. The EVSM aids in the development of a method that allows quick and comprehensive analysis of energy and material flows. The results of this research are important to practitioners and academics as it provides an extension and further capability of Lean Manufacturing tools. Additionally, the EVSM provides a gateway into realising environmental benefits and sustainable manufacturing through Lean Manufacturing.","PeriodicalId":30587,"journal":{"name":"ORiON","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91030200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
