In our previous work (QoSR/sub BF/ algorithm), we have shown that, for a number of specific QoS constraints, this problem can be solved in polynomial time, when a weighted fair queueing (WFQ) service discipline is employed. QoSR/sub BF/ is an on-demand algorithm. We propose a number of QoS routing algorithms for pre-computed paths, when all or some of the flow specification parameters and the amount of bandwidth that has to be reserved are not known a priori. We also show that the size of the routing table could be reduced, as paths satisfying some conditions could be neglected.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131032724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to demonstrate the usefulness and the feasibility of the protocol synthesis approach presented by Kahlouche and Girardot (see IEEE INFOCOM'1996, p.1165-73, 1996), we have developed a software tool-set for automated protocol synthesis called STEPS which supports our synthesis approach. The aim of this paper is to present the functionalities and an experimentation of STEPS. We also propose a new protocol development methodology based on our synthesis approach.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131056434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our algorithms consider dynamic scheduling of (time, wavelength) slots in a multihop TWDM transmission schedule, so that a set of time-critical messages can meet their hard (and, soft) deadlines. Hard real-time messages are assigned to the highest priority level, while soft real-time messages are assigned to user-defined, progressively lower priority levels. The objective is to schedule these messages, all or as many as possible following the priority ordering. Previous research in this direction are either static scheduling policies (which cannot adapt to varying traffic conditions), or dynamic scheduling but for non-realtime traffic. Performance is measured in simulation. Where input factors include load, proximity of the deadline values, relative mix of hard and soft real-time messages, and priority levels of the messages.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132963224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This environment, however is not developed enough to realize well-synchronized high performance multimedia communications, because there are still problems that must be solved. To solve these problems, we propose new algorithms and techniques that have already been implemented and verified on a testbed system. We discuss the influence of human media perception and the control characteristics of audio and video devices on the synchronization mechanisms. We mainly discuss synchronization methods under resource critical situations. The methods are also extended to handle packet loss error recovery.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129142486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes an environment, which supports migration of mobile code developed using heterogeneous languages. Current developments in the area of mobile code and distributed mobile computing systems are discussed and placed within the context of the proposed system. The architecture behind the proposed portable environment small operating system (PESOS) provides an open platform for distributed persistent personal agents written using a variety of languages. Additionally PESOS introduces and discusses the concept of a uniform migration wrapper consisting of portable file systems (PFS) within which applications and data are embedded.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117017883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we describe the architecture, implementation, and initial experiences with a system designed to meet this challenge. This system, which we call a QoS capable switch-router (QSR), combines the salient features of switching and routing technologies to provide high throughput and support the different classes of service being defined by the IETF. It consists of a core (ATM) switch fabric connecting intelligent adapters, each capable of both routing and switching pockets. A control engine is responsible for routing, RSVP signalling, and resource management. We have built a prototype network of 3 systems connected to several UNIX hosts, and have conducted preliminary performance measurements on this network.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"121-124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114152626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine various unspecified bit rate (UBR) drop policies, TCP mechanisms and network configurations to recommend optimal parameters for TCP over UBR. We discuss various TCP congestion control mechanisms compare their performance for LANs and WANs. We describe the effect of satellite delays on TCP performance over UBR and present simulation results for LANs, WANs and satellite networks. SACK TCP improves the performance of TCP over UBR, especially for large delay networks. Intelligent drop policies at the switches are an important factor for good performance in local area networks.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124421099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A solution for the priority queue problem of deadline-ordered service disciplines","authors":"N. Figueira","doi":"10.1109/ICCCN.1997.623330","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICCCN.1997.623330","url":null,"abstract":"To provide service guarantees in packet-switching networks, several deadline-ordered service disciplines have been proposed, including delay-EDD (earliest due deadline), jitter-EDD, leave-in-time, RFS, and virtual-clock. In a deadline-ordered service discipline, packets are assigned transmission deadlines and are transmitted according to the deadline-ordered scheduling policy: transmit packets in increasing order of deadlines. Although these service disciplines provide desirable quality of service (QoS) guarantees, they have been regarded as infeasible for high-speed networks due to the high overhead imposed by the sorting of packets in the server queue. This paper shows that these service disciplines become efficient if they replace the deadline-ordered scheduling policy with a new scheduling policy that is defined. This new scheduling policy uses hardware support to achieve an O(1) time complexity. We prove that a server that employs this new scheduling policy provides a delay bound to real-time packets that is slightly larger than what the server can provide with deadline-ordered scheduling.","PeriodicalId":305733,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Sixth International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121550886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
